      @@toniay4202 The best way is to buy a super router with free VPN built in and set up GL router with your home router so it can pick up your home IP. Your GL router will first connect to your home router then it will connect to your VPN set up at home. Your VPN set up on your home router will be the IP connecting to your job.

      Right, I am taking precautions by hardwiring to the travel router only, turning off bluetooth, and going on airplane mode. Scary thing is sometimes google searches know I am in a different country.

    My current job my employer knows I am in another country (they moved me to contract) But in speaking to the sysAdmin about this topic he said ... another rookie mistake he has seen: Make sure your laptop/Device timezone is manually set to your works timezone.
    A lot of websites and services take you locally set timezone, not your IP address to determine your location for services/ads/etc.

    The issue of geolocation has been mentioned by someone else (turn off WiFi and bluetooth). But there is also the issue of what to do if your home Internet stops working or your home router/VPN endpoint needs rebooting and whether anyone will be at home to do it. Or perhaps you don't have a physical home at all. A possible strategy around this is to install a VPN endpoint on a rented server near your city. E.g. Linode or whatever. The server could even be left shutdown most of the time and only used as a backup (avoiding costs if you pick a host which only charges for uptime).
    Something else to be aware of is that if discovered you could not only be breaching your visa terms (working while on a tourist visa), but there could be financial implications for your company (such as tax on workers applicable in each location). Depending on your country and the company itself it isn't outside the possibility of the company seeking to recover those costs from you. It's very unlikely but something to be aware of when deciding to hide it from your employer.

    • @termintor1
      @termintor1 Před 7 měsíci

      Another problem is, that some employers have work-issued laptops. They are the admin and they can't turn off the ability to disable location for you. They've done this on my MacBook but they also know where I am so I am not hiding anything.
      They also don't say anything if I work from a different device, so I could change the location settings on my personal device and work. But then they may monitor for inactivity (personally I think that sort of monitoring is reserved for people who don't perform at work, but you never know from employer to employer and depending on the employer)

      @@lovelyshelly220 I have two work Macbooks, both I can turn the location settings off. If they wanted, both jobs could very easily just switch it back on. To answer your question, if it is a work issue laptop, and they have their security software installed, YES, they could remotely enable any options they want, enable location and then for example use FIND MY DEVICE/MACBOOK to locate your position based on bluetooth and wifi router around you. Think of this, how does a Macbook find your device if it doesn't have a GPS module inside it. ...
      ....Having said that, I think that's only if someone goes looking. If you do your work, fly under the sysadmins' radar, and consistently connect to your device from the same IP, it shouldn't be a problem. I can't imagine a large company spending time launching investigations into everybody's true location. Some companies might have automatic flags for it if there are contractual legal issues. Generally, you should be okay.
      But the router connection is the best, the kill switch that is away from the device doesn't show a VPN software installed and is idiot-proof because the kill switch is on the router.

    Great tips, I have been doing this for a few years. I am about to do this with a new job. What scares me the most is I am already travelling and they might send a computer to my residence. Quietly shitting myself about that. The address is my mother's house, I guess I can get her to log in for me and then RDP into the machine so they check it off as, oh yeah he has received it.
    Then I switch to my MacBook and if anyone asks, I just say,yeah dude I much prefer working on my MAC.
    I think this will work, the only thing that could screw me is if they want to do a shadow session at the start, and they use notice the RDP, hopefully, it will be me watching their screen... or some situation like this.

      Don't really know anything about IT tracing you via ping. I guess if they really want to catch you then they will. You can tell if your VPN is offline when you try to connect your travel router. The only backup I really have is that I have wireguard also set up on my phone.If everything fails you can blame your ISP or use all your sick days and go home lol.

Do you also happen to know if you're outside the US for so long that when it's tax season the US gov will require my company to complete forms/pay fines because one of their employees has spent longer than X days outside American grounds ? I've heard this to be a big problem with not wanting people to work abroad long-term

    Question. Why would you need your job to allow you to work fully remotely, if you're trying to be discreet about where you're working from? If they let you work from anywhere, why do you need to keep it a secret?

      @@afksosa Yes. That's my point. Some people are not allowed to work anywhere. WFH and "remote" are not the same.
      But you were saying you need your employer's permission to work from anywhere on the planet - yet, work discreetly.
      I'm saying if you have permission, there is no need to be discreet.

      COST OF LIVING.
      Cost of Living-based wages is a very real and implemented concept in businesses with global staff. After 6 months your company might start asking questions and see you as an opportunity to save some coin.
      There are PROs and CONs. One of the CONs is you have an expat wage and get to live like a king. If I am getting the same wage based on local costs, all of a sudden the whole thing is not attractive anymore and I am putting myself in a worse position.
      The entire reason I am doing it is because I am priced out of my local housing market and I feel like I am in a prison sentence, waiting for retirement while paying off someone else investment property. Even with an above-average salary. This is my way of beating the system and like hell, I am going to allow for pay cuts based on COLA.
      Society has squeezed me, I will keep my secret and my salary. Now I can afford to save %90 of my salary and I don't want my new employer to start rubbing their greasing little hands at that figure, as my current employer has just started to do.

      @@gabrielschroll3824 It's because no employer will grant that permission because it creates tax liabilities with the foreign country that they're not set up to operate in. Hence why he has to try to trick the VPN. But there's no way to do that really with these router tricks, their IT department can still detect that he is overseas, but no one really audits that stuff unless something actually happens. I've worked at several Big 4s and have worked abroad for months, which is not allowed and have never got in trouble. I don't use any router tricks either.

    You can't just work from abroad if you have a job that allows you to work remotely. Remote work is meant to be only within the United States. Otherwise you create tax liabilities for your employer with the foreign country that you're working from. Remember tax is based on where the work is conducted. You have to be a contractor in order to work from abroad, not a W-2 employee.

      Public VPN services have known IP ranges. It is possible for your company to detect that you are using a VPN. A better approach is to rent a server in a city near your normal home location and install a VPN on it. That way it won't have a publicly known IP.

    • @tnetroP
      @tnetroP Před 11 měsíci

      @@LiMuBai You can do either (physical server or a virtual server in the cloud). My recommendation is to use a cheap shared server in the cloud such as with Linode and then run a VPN server on that. That way if the server goes down it can be brought back up again without anyone having to physically access it.
