  • In a previous video we looked at how we could use the GL.iNet Slate AX with NordVPN to change our location. This time we are using a second router to share our Home Internet using WireGuard® VPN Server so no matter where we travel the Slate AX will make it look like we are still home.

    UPDATE: I don't have a video for this yet, but if you don't have a Public IP Address or if you otherwise cannot Port Forward, firmware version 4.2 has ZeroTier support! This service requires a free zerotier account but does not require port forwarding!
    See the docs here: docs.gl-inet.com/en/4/tutoria...
    The Opal does not have version 4.2 so it does not support ZeroTier! Here is a list of devices that do:

    Just wanted to leave a note incase anyone runs into the same issues I had getting this setup running. I have a Brune2 as the VPN Server and the Slate take with me. I followed all the same steps, including the port forwarding on my main ISP router, except changed the IP to 10.1.0.x/24 instead of the default. After I was able to run the Server on the Brune2 I tested the connection with the Wireguard app, important to note when you're testing the connection turn off wifi and use a separate network like 4G/5G.
    Once I uploaded the Client config file to the Slate it initially wasn't getting a handshake and connect but I was trying on the same network. Once I had everything configured and I turned on the client outside my home network and the Slate and Brune started to talk to each other as intended. Still need to test more outside my home office but this video is the best tutorial I found on this after reading through many other pages, forum posts and documentation. THANK YOU Justin!!!

    • @zahscr
      @zahscr Před rokem +1

      @@josieicaza7031 for me it was just crappy software in the modem. Make sure that you’re setting up port forwarding on the correct device. For example, I had a modem which was the internet gateway and a separate router for wifi, which meant I needed to set up port forwarding on the gateway modem and connect the gl.Uber to that.
      The other thing is try restarting whichever device is doing the port forwarding after you set it up and give it a few minutes. If that doesn’t work then do a factory reset (make sure you can recreate whatever configurations you had) and then try setting up the port forwarding again - also with a restart after.
      Hope you get it working!

    I tried your setup and you were very good at explaining things, it appears to be working with the VPN dashboard showing up and down traffic. Since it is going to a Beryl at the "home" location which also gives the 192.168.8.xx IP it was hard to determine if it really was working. So while doing the speed test I disconnected the client and it stopped the speed test, but I sure can't tell by the IP address. I have used it both domestically in the US and internationally with no problems. I updated the firmware on the home Opal device today, and was warned that the process would remove custom settings, so I had to reconfigure the WireGuard server. The update added a nice feature to the configuration process where you can choose to "Use DDNS Domain" so that it generates the script including the DDNS address, so you no longer need to cut and paste that information manually.

Also, if your home Internet goes down while you are away, you are out of luck. So be sure to test as much as you can before you go. Safe travels and thanks for watching!

    Hi Justine!
    Thanks for this video! I just have a few question. It was mentioned that your router is behind NAT. GLinet website says you wont be able to setup a server if you're behind NAT. Can you confirm if your router is actually behind NAT or they gave you dedicated public IP by checking WAN on your ISPs router and the ip you have on whatismyip? If they're not the same and indeed behind NAT, which ip address did you use for the DDNS? The one on the router or the one from whatismyip? Thanks!

    • @justinreviewsandrepairs5246
      @justinreviewsandrepairs5246  Před rokem +2

      You might be referring to cgNAT? NAT is good, I have a dynamic IPv4 address from my ISP and DDNS automatically handles it. cgNAT is a common practice among 5g Internet providers and you share your IP with other customers so you cannot port forward.

The original Beryl may or may not get updated, but the Beryl AX is significantly faster for WireGuard ®️. In the event that you find out that you cannot do the port forwarding step, the Beryl AX supports ZeroTier which is an alternative method that will allow you to complete the overall setup. As far as which device stays home, it can be either since the devices are extremely similar, but I prefer to take the Slate AX and leave the slower device.

    This is a great video Justin. I am planning on purchasing both as you have recommended in this video. I just wanted to make sure it is still the good solution or anything have changed since you have published this video. I am thinking Opal instead of two Slate as Opal is much cheaper but want to make sure for two person to have connection back home at the same time is still a good choice. Would there be any performance issue with Opal assuming that the internet speed is decent at the remote location. My home is ATT and 300mbs plan.
    And one last and important question. Is there any issue using work laptop that uses cisco any connect to vpn to work server but for it's internet connection it would connect to Slate that would then vpn back home using wiregurad ?

    • @justinreviewsandrepairs5246
      @justinreviewsandrepairs5246  Před 10 měsíci

      Thank you! Two Opal would be fine for light use like Email and browsing the web, but if you need to do more then the Beryl AX or Slate AX would be better suited because they have more processing power. The VPN connection is actually encrypting and decrypting messages as fast as it can so over time all of the models should heat up and possibly slow down if it gets hot enough, but the Slate AX has a built in fan.
      So far this solution seems to work with every Work VPN since the router itself is providing a VPN connection back home that your Work VPN can use to connect as it would at home. The only unsolved mystery is how to decrease latency, which is highly dependent on your Internet connection on both ends.

Yesterday, I went to a dealership for a maintenance and I decided to bring my wireguard client Beryl AX with me to test it out outside of my home network. I left my wireguard server Berly at home basically. There was no issue with connecting to the dealership's wifi via my wireguard client, didn't have to deal with a captive portal or anything like that. The issue I had started when it came to enabling my wireguard client on the dealerships wifi. It kept stuck at the status saying "the client is starting please wait". When I checked the logs I saw an error something like this "user.notice firewall : reloading firewall due to ifdown of wgclient". Do you have any idea what causes this issue by any chance? Should I add the every IP address of the network I am in to my router first and then enable wireguard client? Or is it something else? Thanks!

      If it works from another network such as a hotspot or friends network, then it may have been the dealership blocking traffic because it was not http traffic on port 80 or 443. If you are in the United States I have been having decent results from Dish's Project Genesis 5g hotspot for just $20/month

      Yes, using two Slate AX would allow for higher speeds. Since the WireGuard ®️ implementation is standard, you could also run the VPN server on a dedicated server or NAS if you happen to have one already. One thing to keep in mind is that latency will increase as you get physically farther from your server, there is not much that can be done about that besides trying to have lower latency Internet such as fiberoptic.

      Some Asus routers have OpenVPN (older VPN technology) and some models have WireGuard ®️. If your model supports running a VPN Server you could go that route. If your model supports WireGuard ®️ but you don't see it, you may need to upgrade your firmware.
      From there you would need to find a video for Asus routers to generate the WireGuard ®️ configuration file but the overall process is similar (Asus just has their own names for things).

      Rekey timeouts are usually a problem with the port forwarding, maybe the internal IP address assigned to your travel router (by your ISP Router) changed so you'll need to update the port forwarding. If that is what happened then it may be worthwhile to buy a UPS this Black Friday to keep both routers from rebooting in a power outage. You will always be limited by your slowest connection, that's why if possible you should get Fiber Optic Internet for both ends.

    Hi Justin, does the router you use at home matter in regards to the final VPN speed? In this video, you're using Opal. If you used two AX Slate, would there be a significant difference? I'd imagine the wireguard rating only matters with the travel router and since Opal has a Gigabit Ethernet to connect to the router, that speed won't be the bottleneck. Thanks!

    • @justinreviewsandrepairs5246
      @justinreviewsandrepairs5246  Před 10 měsíci +1

      It depends greatly on your Internet speeds at both ends. If you have fiber optic Internet on both ends then two Slate AX would be needed, but typically that is not the case. I typically use my hot spot which isn't fast enough to exceed the speeds of the Opal.

    • @justinreviewsandrepairs5246
      @justinreviewsandrepairs5246  Před 9 dny +1

      Hello thank you
      1. Please see the video description for a list of routers
      2. Yes, but Xfinity requires an extra step because they happen to use the same IP Address range as WireGuard ®️. The 10.0.0.1/24 has to be changed to 10.1.0.1/24 as seen here: docs.gl-inet.com/router/en/4/interface_guide/wireguard_server/#setup-wireguard-server
      3. Your speeds depend on which router you get and your Internet speeds at both locations. Even the Beryl AX is fast when paired with Fiber Optic Internet. Cable usually advertises fast speeds but they don't tell you that your upload speed is comparable to what we used 20 years ago! Your Home Server Router will have to Upload to your remote location so it is preferred to have Fiber Optic Internet.

    • @justinreviewsandrepairs5246
      @justinreviewsandrepairs5246  Před 8 měsíci

      It depends... OpenVPN is generally slower than WireGuard®️, but if you use a commercial VPN service such as WindScribe that uses WireGuard®️ then it would likely be faster than running your own WireGuard®️ server. If you want to talk about specifics then it would be necessary to list both cities, both Internet connection specifications, and which two travel routers you will use. Using two Slate AX on fiber optic connections can generally achieve great speeds between many developed countries.

    Hello Justin! Does this same configuration work if you are connected via Ethernet? The GL.iNET router is connected to my ISP router via WAN port. I am trying to determine if DDNS will be needed before I set this up to act as a WireGuard VPN Server

    • @justinreviewsandrepairs5246

      Unless you have a static public IP Address, DDNS will be required. DDNS is included free with the router though.

    Hi Justin, thank you so much for the video! We are embracing on a journey of being digital nomads. My question is as our jobs are remote call customer support, I read some where that VPN router/client make it behind NAT and will slow down the VOIP service ( the company use Amazon Connect). We have a relative fast internet speed in Australia and we are looking to go South East Asia. Will this be a problem with the phone calls quality? Cheers

    • @justinreviewsandrepairs5246
      @justinreviewsandrepairs5246  Před měsícem

      It's not so much that NAT as it is the latency. Your Internet traffic is going from wherever you are back to your house then to the Internet, then to your house, then back to wherever you are, so you want as much Fiber Optic Internet as possible. Some countries do not have as good of infrastructure as others and while you may have Fiber in a country, they might pass traffic through a country that doesn't have Fiber which will increase your latency and result in poor call quality. You can estimate latency between major cities using this tool: wondernetwork.com/pings
      If the latency is over 200ms then you will likely have poor call quality.

    Hi Justin, I am using an Arris router/modem. Question: on this video, when you went into the frontier modem, you were in port forwarding section. I noticed that you had port triggering enabled. Is this necessary? I have that on my modem and it's disabled - is this a problem? I am trying to setup everything any you described in this video. Thank you

    • @justinreviewsandrepairs5246

      Hello, only Port Forwarding is necessary. Be sure to test a power outage scenario to make sure Port Forwarding works after a power outage. Some routers won't, and in those cases there are some things you can do such as set a Private Static IP Address or buy a UPS.

    So my question is this, I have a work laptop where I have to connect my laptop directly to my router with an Ethernet cord. Will this work for this situation? Also I don’t necessarily have to be at my home but I have to be in the United States and I plan to travel abroad and work. Do you think I need just the Slate AX router or should I use this setup?

    • @justinreviewsandrepairs5246
      @justinreviewsandrepairs5246  Před rokem +1

      I would just buy two of the cheaper Opal since you don't need WiFi 6 and then you would have the option to connect home if needed for less than the price of the Slate AX. Happy travels!

    Hey Justin! This is a great video. Though I am not a software expert I was able to set my routers up. But I have been facing a problem and was looking if you could help me. I have configured a flint as my home router and beryl ax as my travel router. When I set the wire guard server up they both connected well and all was fine but as soon as I took my beryl remote with me it wasn’t connecting to the wire guard but again when I got it home it would connect to the flint. Is there something that I am
    Missing here?

      @justinreviewsandrepairs5246  Před 14 dny

      Usually people have the opposite problem 😆
      It is likely that your configuration file is using your local IP Address instead of your DDNS address on the "Endpoint" line. Please double check that you see a domain instead of an IP Address on that line.
      If you prefer, you can email your configuration to support@JustinPruett.com

    Hello Justin, I followed the steps and went thru perfect works great thank you. If I buy another travel router and copy the script on the router will work as well?

    • @justinreviewsandrepairs5246
      @justinreviewsandrepairs5246  Před 2 měsíci

      Great! Yes, you can have many VPN Clients connected to the one VPN Server, but be sure to make a new configuration for each one since each one gets assigned an IP Address. If you copy the same configuration to each one then you can only use one at a time.

    Hello Justin, what happens in case of a power outage while you're travelling ? Does the opal reconnect to the home router when they're both back online and launches the Wireguard server automatically ?

    • @justinreviewsandrepairs5246
      @justinreviewsandrepairs5246  Před 3 měsíci

      Yes, but it is important to test that scenario since some cheap ISP routers will lose your port forwarding settings. It might be a good idea to get a UPS such as the Cyber power to keep your devices on during short power outages: amzn.to/4bGEEAH #ad

    Hi Justin, can you set up the routers while in different locations? I am currently in Mexico City so do both routers need to be in the states for set up before I can take the Slate AX with me? Or can I set up the Opal (in the states) meanwhile setting up the Slate AX at the same time?

    • @justinreviewsandrepairs5246
      @justinreviewsandrepairs5246  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Hello, someone will obviously need to plug in and setup the server router (the Opal in this video but I recommend the Beryl AX now) and do the Port Forwarding but for the Client Travel Router (Slate AX) all you need them to send you is the configuration file. So there is no need to travel back as long as someone can set up the Server router and send you the configuration.
