nice motor!!! i had a 1981 johnson 15 growing up that i tried to kill for over 20 years. didn't work. i eventually lost interest, moved to bigger motors (25, 35) and sold the motor. what a regret. just got a 1981 johnson 15 like yours (minus safety and kill switch stuff) last month. this one i'm keeping. short shaft electric start. very dry compression a little low at 85 but dead even. hoping it comes up to 100 after it's run.
Thanks. When my dad first bought it he had it on a 12' starcraft that he built a bow for, and had the motor set up for remote controls. It did almost 40. The 15 on my 14' Lund will do almost 30 mph.
i could only get about 23mph out of my 15 with it on an older mirro craft 14' that was beamy and a slow hull. i'd love to get a remote control set up for this motor and run it on my 12 foot starcraft rowboat, NOT wide but heavy duty thick gauge. i put forward controls on that boat so i could put more power on the back and the lapstrake style hull can take a lot of power and ride very smoothly in up to 2 feet of chop your dad must have been having a blast wingin it at 40mph. and almost 30 isn't bad either on the Lund!! i need to find a prop and a fuel pump for mine. and would really like to get that remote set up but they're not common from what i've gathered over the years
