  • On this edition of RT, the crew has the pleasure of bringing on Josh Kroenke who has his hand in just about every sport imaginable. Owner of the Denver Nuggets & Colorado Avalanche, majority shareholder of English Football Club, Arsenal, and, not to mention his father is the owner of the Los Angeles Rams. Josh talks all about the excitement around his family hosting the biggest party in the WORLD this weekend…The Super Bowl. Early on, Josh, an avid golfer, gets into his excitement with his first ever appearance on the PGA tour in the Pebble Beach PRO-AM, as well as giving Richard the business about taking the crown in their Fantasy Football league this year. Pivoting to basketball, we chop it up with Josh on why Nikola Jokic is supremely special and what he adds to Kroenke’s ball club, The Nuggets. They also get into the nitty gritty about his team across the pond, Arsenal. All this, and a WHOLE lot more. CHEERS!

Great interview! As an Arsenal supporter, I’m always worried about the Kronke family owning Arsenal because the competitiveness in the Premier League has grown exponentially within the last fifteen years. Adding Chelsea and Manchester City to Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester United and Liverpool has made it incredibly difficult to get to the Champions League. But I’m encouraged because he acknowledged the deep passion of the supporters of Football in Europe. I’m praying the Kronke family makes Arsenal a priority. Obviously the Rams will always be important and the Nuggets will be important since Josh played college basketball but Arsenal has to be a priority in order to keep up with the top Premier League teams and the other top teams in Europe.

The Kroenkes have not too much to do about the league getting tougher, since Wenger always thought the squad he had was good enough and didn't like to spend. I would have thought after the #WeCareDoYou situation back in 2019, that Josh would have learned not to bs people, especially us fans, because we know a LOT more than him about both sport in general but also, our club. We are not fly by night fans here in the UK, we bleed our club because historically they are and were built from the communities they were founded in.
As such, when he says stuff like "Arsenal fans don't look at our franchises here in the US, he lies", not only do we look, we were acutely aware both when Stan started buying shared right up until he took the club private, that the KSE business model was to have a lot of sports franchises and do NOTHING with them. We knew absolutely what they winning record of Rapids, the Avalanche, the Nuggets and the Rams were, we knew that most of them hadn't won ANYTHING since KSE took over and we knew precisely what that meant for our club. And while the Rams have won the Superbowl since (allbeit by destroying their future draft picks and stretching the salary cap to breaking) the reality is, UNTIL THEN, the sum total of KSE's sporting record was, fuck all.
Therefore, let's not kid ourselves that KSE or Josh has some foundating in sporting success, they don't, they never have, and we all know that.
Now, we hope they GET one, but that is yet to be seen, because ONE win does not a sports ownership legacy, make.
Also, the Super League... this was not about "resistance to change" and Josh knows good and well it wasn't, so either he's being disingenous, or WORSE, he still hasn't understood!
The idea of the Super League would have possibly worked if it was a European LEAGUE format, where membership was determined by your position in your home league and where you would be relegated out, if you did not perform, and would gain access through home league results. Essentially replacing the "Champions League" and "Europa League" which very few European football fans like, as UEFA is an absolutely ABYSMAL football governing body. That "might" have worked. As soon as founding members face no relegation or penalty for underperforming either in the league or at home, it was DOOMED.
ANY European football fan would have told you immediately that a sports model where there is no relegation and no penalty for failure (which is 100% an American 'participation medal' form of understanding of sport) would not work here. In Europe, and ESPECIALLY in football, while money is a big BIG factor, there is nothing worse than breaking the fourth wall of football and removing meritocracy.
You win, you stay up, maybe you win a championship.... you LOSE, you get relegated, and maybe you become a Nottingham Forest or a Leeds from former European Champions to the 3rd tier of English football and taking years to come back again. That's how MERIT works. You live and die as a club on your RESULTS.
The only benefit the Super League had was to OWNERSHIP and REVENUE. Guaranteed games, and participation with no relegation means that they would always have the big games, the big TV money and could inflate both the value of the club, but also, their POCKETS. That's the ACTUAL truth that he declines to mention and skirts around with this "Arsenal in, or out" bs. The truth is, out, if it went ahead, they would lose MONEY, not face.
It should say a lot that this interview went NOWHERE in the UK. I've never seen it publicised across any of the Arsenal forums, fan groups, group chats, Twitter, nothing. Why?, because when your "mates" are interviewing you as a PR exercise... we, fans, see through that.
    Getting better Josh.
But my oh my do you still have some things to learn about football in this country.

Josh’s take on loss of Football revenue as it relates to Arsenal FC is disingenuous. All sports clubs loss a lot of revenue by not being able to fill stadiums; their are several revenue streams - commercial, television and of course stadium or game day totals. It’s BS to say the Super League had anything to do with “finding a revenue solution during Covid-19”. It was a money grab plain and simple or else more clubs would have been involved. I’m US based so I know the model. I still think Josh seems to not fully understand Football in general. This at the end of the day is an asset, treat it like such and surround yourself with people who know the sport and give them a seat on the Arsenal board. Seems like a very likeable person. I’ve had enough of Stan but I’m willing to give Josh a chance. Seems like he knows enough about sports to know what works and what doesn’t. Young team and a young coach. Regardless of if arteta works out or not, we’ve got a very sustainable model where we don’t just have to terminate contracts to sell players. If a player wants to leave, we can charge enormous money because we’re a big club, and they’re young talented players. Ben white could go for 80m. Gabriel for 60m, Tierney for 50m, Odegaard for 90m. If it doesn’t work, we can rebuild and start again. A lot riskier signing players in their prime on massive wages. I’m willing to give him a chance because at the very least, everyone can see what he’s trying to do

If he keeps developing the way he is, provided he’s English as well, and given past prices for English CBs (Maguire), we’d be able to get 80m for him if he goes to an English club. Odegaard is only 23 and our best player. Again, if he develops the way he is right now, given he’s the captain of his country and potentially our next captain, adding onto that his quality and reputation, I definitely think we’d get 90m for him. Florian Wirtz, Dani Olmo, and Christopher Nkunku are all touted to be worth around 70-90m, Odegaard is as good as those guys with just as high of a ceiling, if not higher

Now it makes sense as to why Arteta wasn't sacked; it's because he thinks, because Arteta worked under a great manager/club, he will replicate that in Arsenal.
