Norm nailed Letterman. The interactions between Letterman and Paul were spot on. That's exactly how some of their conversations were like. RIP Norm. You were a legend.
You know who would have been better?
Chong.
Ah-HA-Ha!
@@David-vh2rl bet you don't own a doghouse
It’s how ALL of their conversations were like. Literally nothing of value from Paul Schaffer. But good musician though.
Credit to Mark McKinney as Paul Shaffer. He was great!
Did you enjoy the shrimp?
For a guy that doesn't like to do impersonations or sketches, Norm MacDonald was amazing.
The ones he did decide to do were FUCKING HILARIOUS!
i think he only would do them if he could do them right. i recall him doing letterman, quinton tarintino, burt reynolds, and larry king
His impersonations are actually out of this world, like he's actually channeling the person. Check out his Richard Nixon, Bill Cosby, Rodney Dangerfield.
@@rmoon01 And Super Dave
He ruined the sketch
The audience didn't fully appreciate Norm's Letterman impression which is the best I've ever seen.
I think it was so good, it was like watching Letterman so they didn't really react. Norm nailed it.
I don’t think the audience got it!
Yeah, they didn't wake up until De Niro walked on stage.
SNL couldn't handle Norm
They had to make him leave.
He and a few writers were above the audience. NORM gets better as the years roll
Yep the general viewing public didn't appreciate Norm fully at all man which is indicative of the sad State of affairs of the general consciousness and intelligence of our country man
The amazing part of this sketch is that at times I genuinely forget that I'm not watching a segment of the Letterman show.
I turned my back and thought it was Dave.
The only thing missing was more musical stings from the band
Same.
Exactly! It was just that spot on.
Wow, Lettermans impersonation of Norm McDonald is amazing.
Letterman was his biggest inspiration to do comedy.

Good eye! That was actually David Letterman impersonating Norm McDonald attempting to impersonate David Letterman.

I was waiting on the “HEE HEE” fake laugh that Letterman always did. Was not disappointed
The coughing was an especially nice touch
@@davidhutchinson7888 Letterman's whole philosophy of doing a talk show was to waste as much of the network's precious time as possible. That's not a criticism. He and Merrill Markoe cooked up the idea of doing an unslick, anti-talk show. In a sense parodying the usual shows. So, no sense of moving it along at the desk. Lots of repeated words and phrases he liked the sound of, unmotivated laughing, clearing the throat on air! (what a rule that broke in those days) -- and those faces. Norm seems to know them all. Right down to the stick out your chin and grimace.
@@scribe570 "Stop bending the shafts!!"
I loved that total disconnect between Letterman and Paul. Paul is supper talented which makes me believe he was being passive aggressive with letterman all the time.. Nice Job Norm. He did spot on Burt Reynolds

Norm's impression of Dave's smarminess is beyond spot on and amazing. Alec was great as DeNiro, as was the Paul Schaefer impersonation. RIP Mr. McDonald.
That was Mark McKinney..Before SNL he was great in the Canadian sketch comedy show..Kids in the Hall.

Oh- Paul

I lose it when he starts coughing. Norm's hero worship of Letterman paid off, because every single part of this parody is spot on.
I agree. Dave smoked for years even after he stopped smoking "On Air". 🚬😤💨
I think they’re friendship made it funnier for me
Hero worship? Youre trippin
"Norm MacDonald Has a Show" had guests that were basically his friends that appeared on his show as a favor (nothing wrong with that -- he has famous friends). This included Dave. But he had a bigger role than the other guests, acting as a production consultant for Norm's show.
HA!!! The over exaggerated cough that norm makes into a over OVER exaggerated cough followed by the Hee Hee
incredible impersonation of letterman, hilarious.
You4rik Trist totally agree. great de niro as wel

Explain to the people at home who David Letterman is
isnt it norm macdonald
Mehmet410 cp Yes it's Norm.
RIP Norm! David never held this against you, of course, he had you as a guest on his final show. That's a testament to Norm's humor.
And Norm cried like a baby. Beautiful moment.
Dave had Norm do the impression on his show.
Why would he hold this against him? Letterman would need to be a massive pussy to cry over something like this
@@jamesevans2507 Well... maybe a big ego for one thing. Same reason why Prince wouldn't let Weird Al do a parody of any of his songs.
The fact that Norm did such an amazing job doesn't really wipe away the fact that it skewered him pretty good!
I love that this is just doing spot on impressions for laughs. There aren’t any jokes. It’s the toughest comedy to pull off and they nail it.
Yes, you end up being just delighted by it rather than merely chuckling at some jokey jokes. It's great that after Dave insists on his Chong joke to De Niro, Alex just sits there with no comeback. The real De Niro wasn't a comedian. He didn't have snappy comebacks for everything when he was on a talk show. So, that silence gets a good laugh.
Spot on....have a drink.
So true!
And Dave would do this all the time -- just start riffing on something that came up in the program. You know how Norm's doing it, dontcha? With Chong. Ya like that, Paul, huh? Chong!
"little bit, little bit." lol
I don't like that thing. Turn it off! Turn it off!
The Letterman, Paul and Deniro impressions were just spot on

Norm MacDonald is so good at capturing the personality he's impersonating, some people don't get the humour. I think he gets the obnoxiousness of them, then repeats it like he does here with Letterman. This is actually just like the cringe-worthy segments from Letterman's show as opposed to being more like a parody. Norm's impression of Burt Reynolds on "Celebrity Jeopardy" is like that too. Really good impersonation.
It's has a dark feel to it... Or is that just me? Norm is amazing..
Baldwin was always one of my favorite guests. His interactions with Canteen Boy had my whole family rolling.

He would've done even better with a gun
I can't believe how good the de niro impression was, his voice quality and mouth shape, amazing
Regardless of how you feel about the man, Alec Baldwin is undeniably one of the greatest SNL hosts of all time. He probably has 20 sketches that I consider to be great, many cast members can't even say that
This is a hilariously accurate impression of De Niro's weird/awkward behavior in interviews, the whole part at 3:40 with him staring off into space, not answering the question that was asked, and then going into an unrelated anecdote about Martin Scorsese is all stuff he would do IRL.
He was annoyed he was upstaged
Ha, that is so Letterman and Paul!
That is exactly the kind of gags Letterman would do.
Yep. Letterman once riffed about a guy in a gym who approached him and asked, "Uhhhh, ya got any gum?" It was exactly like this.

Same here!
The timing, rhythm and pauses are just perfect. Incredible.
Norm adores Letterman. Considers him to be one of his comedic heroes, and actually once broke down doing his set on the Late Show around the time of Letterman’s retirement. It helps when you are doing an impression of someone you respect. It’s that much easier to nail their mannerism and charisma.
Norm was picked by David to be the last comedian to ever perform on his show!
Norm isn't great with doing voices, but his Letterman mannerisms are spot on. Great episode. I'd mention Alec, but we all already know it, so no need to say anything there.
