      Skullgirls can be pretty rough online, but it also depends on your playstyle and the opponents you fight against.
      I'm a Valentine main so I'm a rushdown player, the most challenging opponents I've met have been zoners (absolute cancerous people that pretty much spam projectiles(ex: Peacock)).
      Most of the time they're not that good and I can get in with a qcfHK to start a combo or lock them in a corner, but after a match against a zoner I just leave the lobby and look for another one. Picking fights is extremely important in Skullgirls online if you want to have fun.

      Don't sweat it. Unfortunately Skull Girls has a small but very passionate player base and due to the balance, depth and sublime controls it also tends to attract hard core fight game fans. In other words the people you are going to find online are absolute gods. Just screwing around buzzed at 2am on Skull Girls I have seriously run into famous people from the fight game world and yeah they just mop the floor with you. I mean its neat getting to fight a pro because you got to fight the real deal, but the novelty wears off real fast after they mop the floor with the remains of your face a few times. I have been playing fight games since the SF2 arcade days and I'm not half bad. I was always that one kid that sat on the machine with one quarter and everyone lined up to get their ass kicked by me. I went online in Skull Girls expecting to mop up and I was astounded by the depth of talent there is in this game's fan base. I learned really quickly that I was just the big fish in a very small pond and now that I was swimming in the ocean there were sharks and I was the chum. Still an amazing fight game. It's great at parties since the characters are hilarious and eye catching which makes it a load of fun just for regular ol' drunk party people to play and beat the crap out of each other with zombie cat girls, monster nuns and cute school girls with man eating hair.

      ah don't worry. pace yourself. Jumping into fighters takes just a little bit, you have to sync up your hands and your eyes together. Don't rush things and just learn where your hand placement is at all times, that way you can then focus on doing motions and button presses.

      Tanner Ryan treat it like like a physical activity. if you get tired, or even frustrated, take a break from playing and recollect your thoughts and what you learned. then return once again when you feel like it. some people will lose the drive to keep playing but that’s always dependent on the person and their will to continue.

    you don't learn to play a fighting game by getting your ass kick by the cpu in arcade mode, you get gud by getting your ass kick by real people either local or online.

    • @bazzjedimaster
      @bazzjedimaster Před 7 lety +58

      Giggle smith
      it does, the cpu will teach you nothing of how real players actually react to any given situation, worse it can give you bad habits since the cpu doesn't respond to human logic, it respond directly to your inputs, thus forcing you to use stuff that normally against a human player it wouldn't be safe. and thats the thing it doesn't matter how good a tutorial is or how fair the AI is, in the end that can only carry you so far, but to really improve in a competetive game you need to play other people.

    • @MFSIMBA
      @MFSIMBA Před 7 lety +28

      bazz is right, best way to learn is through actually playing real people. Fighting games are inherently a competitive environment, one where players can express themselves in the way they play their characters. How can you learn the concepts of baiting, reading, pressure, or even just mindgames in general, if the person you're playing against is a real person? While I do think arcade mode is still pretty good at getting you more comfortable with your character, it's not something you should ever rely on to make you better.
      For example, just look at the entire archetype of a grappler character like Zangief or Potemkin. They rely on making the opponent fear the power your moves bring, but also must work to actually get in a favorable situation. I can't tell you how many times I've won matches because I successfully baited my opponent and punished accordigly, or just straight up read their next move and punished it. Fighting games are almost like chess, because a CPU won't do things like bait you. Their reads will quite literally be it reading your inputs. Those are things that you have to learn how to adapt to against real opponents.

      redrooster No game is perfect and you gotta look at it as whole on the video game franchise. Was it important, groundbreaking, or introduce new and intrestng mechanics that can't be found in any other fighting games? Is there a nice spread of different characters? What only 2 dudes, when every other fighting game has a nice 50/50 nowadays? Are the characters unique in their personalities or just tailoring to certain fetishes and fan service? Skullgirls as whole to the community might as well never existed due to it's lack of bringing something actually new to us. Also from what I've seen personally and in tournaments... lots and lots of infinite combos THAT ARE ENCOURAGED. That never floats well with any player professional or casual, no one wants to get infinite on for getting hit once.

    Fantastic video! Fighting games are some of the best things to analyze since there is so much to unravel. My main fighting games right now are Skullgirls, Divekick (also a really good topic on how fighting games are more of a mental sport than a skill-based one), Guilty Gear, Sm4sh and Third Strike.
    I love this video to death, but I think there was one thing missing: skill floors and skill ceilings. Skullgirls is amazing in how the skill floor (how easy it is to pick up a character) is so low because, as mentioned in the video, all commands are simple to understand and pull off. However, the skill ceiling (how easy it is to master a character) is extremely high for every character. Take Parasoul: easy to understand her specials, strengths, weaknesses and her combos; however her egret call might seem useless to many players. Until you realize it can cancel any animation, then you discover how many long animations are in your combo, then you realize how much longer you can make your combo now that you have infinite possibilities for links, then you realize you've been spending 50 hours in training mode just to master one combo and you haven't even considered assists yet. The idea that you can understand the basics and probably have a decent duel with most new players because of how low the skill floor is, but still the endless goal to be something better really makes Skullgirls one of the best fighters in my opinion.
    (Still play Divekick, trust me after playing it you will want to make a sequel video)

      Yeah, you are very right. I very briefly say that Skullgirls has a lot of depth and I am aware of the high skill ceiling; but the main thesis of the video is that this game is a great way to teach fundamentals to new, inexperienced players, plus I didn't want the video to go on for too long.
      I am still learning the game too, so I have no authority to talk about how to master the game.

    Skullgirls is definitely my favorite fighter. Partially because I just really like the characters. Their attack animations and designs are a treat to look at and even the voices I found even more memorable than Street Fighter's "HADOKEN!" . Unfortuantely my favorite designed character, Painwheel, is the one I'm worst at. At least I've still got Squiggly and Peacock.

  • @JELIFISH19
    @JELIFISH19 Před 8 lety +83

    While Skullgirls is one of my favorite fighting games of all time, I find the accessibility and ease for beginners to be overrated. For example, everything in the tutorial is traditionally what's found in manuals. But you can't teach someone how to defend. Things like empty jump low works in every game. They're called mixups for a reason. They're intentionally designed to throw you off. You also can't teach someone how to mount a good offense because that completely depends on who you're playing against. It's not just about characters but the actual person you're playing against. Anything you do in a fighting game can and will be used against you when you play someone good.
    Skullgirls is much more accessible than MvC2, the game it's based on. But at the same time, it means you're much more likely to come across someone decent at the game. Fighting games are all about playing another human and that's where difficulty comes in. There are more Skullgirls players that will put you in a never-ending vortex than there are MvC2 players who can play top tier well. Skullgirls ends up being more overwhelming for a beginners than other games. Skullgirls allows you to be very dirty and that's usually the first lesson beginners learn when they get online. They won't get to play. The game revolves around difficult mixups and resets. Even the zoning is brutal. I'm a fighting game veteran but I get more perfects against beginners in Skullgirls than any other game.
    The game is designed around the metagame of competitive MvC2 and making that more accessible and nuanced. It's a lot easier to play Filia than it is to play Magneto. But blocking Magneto isn't any more difficult than blocking Filia. It doesn't make the game any easier to be good. It actually ends up being more complex because it's more balanced and there's a lot more viable strategies. The game caters to the hardcore audience way more than it does to the casual crowd.

    • @SlickEvan
      @SlickEvan Před 7 lety +8

      I partially agree. More accessibility =/= Easier to play. When I just started getting into playing Tekken more seriously (which is considered a pretty hard game to get into) I had also just got Skullgirls and playing in between the two, I had more fun getting my butt whooped in Tekken than I did getting put into a vortex in Skullgirls.
      Not downing Skullgirls by any means I actually found the design very fun but its not necessarily the best example to lead by.

    • @FallenWhiteSaber
      @FallenWhiteSaber Před 7 lety +4

      OriganlGaming This is more due to the mechanical design of Skullgirls, where it not only rewards ending combos prematurely, but actively encourages it with it's Infinite Protection, and plethora of multi-hit assists. Losing, because you fell for one or two near impossible to block feints, not the funnest thing in the world, much as the charm of Skullgirls is there, and that is all you need really, there is ALOT of holes in it's design.

    • @hiroprotagonest
      @hiroprotagonest Před 7 lety +13

      No, you can't teach someone when an opponent is going to do a grab, or if they're going to jump and hit your grab (attempted grab tech) on the way down. However, the game can teach you when an opponent _can_ go for a grab.
      In other words, the tutorial can't teach you to beat someone at Yomi (mindgames), but it can at least teach you to comprehend the tools being used to play Yomi. The tutorial can teach you that tick throws are a thing (I used to think it didn't, but then I redid Grab Mixups and saw Ms. Fortune do jab>grab), or that if your opponent begins moving forward after a blockstring it's probably a grab (they could psych you out, but that's Yomi Level 2).
      I will be the first to say that Skullgirls doesn't have a good CPU mode, and I'll admit Guilty Gear Xrd has a better tutorial. But I will also say that Skullgirls has easily the greatest Training Mode I've ever seen and is very affordable and you should support good business practices.
      I guess I'm a "hardcore" player at this point even though I don't think I'm good. But I've also put in the hours and improved a lot, that's true. While I had a bit of single-player Street Fighter experience, I'd also studied quite a bit of competitive Sm4sh but was never good at it and playing Skullgirls ended up being far more fun. I guess my time in the Sm4sh community did teach me one thing: people kept emphasizing Yomi. Maybe that's the difference between me and other Skullgirls first-timers. But I didn't know what a crossup was, had never seen real high/low mixups, and didn't know how to actually fight Zangief or other grapplers.
      My love of Skullgirls was cemented by branching out to other traditional fighters, and other players have had the opposite where they start with this but like something else more. And this is where "Skullgirls is affordable" comes into it. You can buy Skullgirls at like 50% or even 75% off on Steam, play the tutorials, then if you try online or watch tournaments and don't think you like it, you probably have the money for Guilty Gear, or KoFXIV, or whatever. It won't teach you how to play Tekken though, that's a whole 'nother ballgame.

    And for people who do not understand spacing and such.
    Heres a quick rundown.
    Spacing: Using your range to out range the opponent, so you can attack but even IF you miss, they won't be able to get to you. This also combines into faking attacks, baiting, tomahawk grabs (jumping towards an opponent, they expect an attack, but you just land and grab them). All fighting games use spacing in a sense, and it's the most important of any fighting game.
    And if you wanna git gud. Learning to adapt to different styles and habits is where you will advance in, not the techniques and combos you can do, as you can't get a combo in if the opponent counters you all the time.

    Yo, punk, I heard "FIGHTING GAMES" so I dropped all my shit and ran over to this video, and I'mma bout to put the knowledge smack-down all up ons, bruh. If you're looking to get into the fighting game scene, there's some other great games out that that'll help guide your hips in this dance of death.
    First of, yeah, Skullgirls is a great game to get your feet wet. But...what next? Sure, you may have bleary-eyed dreams of air-comboing your opponents into the nether realm in MVC3, or showing everyone your sweet moves in SF4, but, nah, man, that's not where its at. The next game that you should look into (especially if you wanna keep that trend in 2D fighters) is Persona 4 Arena. This game is great because its made by Atlus, but it ain't no madhouse of color and weeaboo nonsense. What it does basically does is give you a combo button. Mashing the shit outta it will get you a basic combo going, and each character plays differently. Thing is, each combo that it strings out for you can actually be done by, you know, button presses. Doing it THAT way will grant you a greater damage output, and its great because you've already become familiar with the starting frames of each animation. I.E. exploration further provides grand dividends, ya dig? It also has a great practice mode that I didn't really use that much because I'm a baller.
    But yeah, if you're looking to expand your repertoire, then totes go get that, and start whupping up on kids online.
    Secondly, there's games like Tekken that don't make any damn sense, right? Haha! Tekken is so crazy and random and WRONG! Tekken is an art for the greatest hands in the whole kingdom. If you're looking into getting into the great seies (and you should, knowwhati'msayin) then pick up any game after 4. Don't get me wrong, the games that come before it are pretty much the best thing to descend onto the earth ever since Kal-el. This is because there's a thing called"ghost mode" where you DON'T fight spirits or whatever, but instead you fight a series of never-ending AI opponents that steadily get harder. The game grades you depending on your win %, so if you're not doing to hot facing Heihachi for the 500th time, you'll get demoted. Its tough, but that's how it is on the streets. I'm a huge Tekken fan, even before the introduction of this mode, but its let me really branch out, and now I have a vertitable arsenal to destroy children at the arcade. Yes, we have Tekken at an arcade here, and I beat up foo's all the time.
    So spend your fat stacks on those games, and you'll start to really respectable blisters on your fingers. Then, you'll be able to show them off, and everyone will be impressed, and you'll get all the girls.
    But don't play Virtua Fighter. No one plays Virtua Fighter.

      ***** You don't necessarily need a "what next?" when you play something as amazing as Skullgirls. Although if you're looking for a scene that has a lot more tournaments available, then yea might want to expand. Otherwise, I honestly think Skullgirls is one of the best fighting games, and is heavily underrated.

      +Ryan Reynolds Hey man, I didn't mean to be slinging any shade, ya hear? "Get your feet wet" was more a statement towards this being his first trench-deep look into the genre, not the state of the game itself. Which is why I thought it'd be keen to give P4A a shout out because, while its still simple, its got some pretty deep tech, yeah?
      And, yeah, guv, I know all the subgenres all jive to their own beat, but they still all follow the same basic principles. This guy likes what the genre has been dishin' out so far so why not try out what else it has to offer? Just relax, man, and play some games. It's all good!

    But now that you mention it, I'd enjoy watching a movie where a guy hacks the pentagon with a fight stick.

    I agree with you that they somehow made this game very accessible despite its depth. It was the first traditional 2d fighting game i ever got into. Like, i had played smash, and tried and failed to play cross tag battle a long time ago. But this game’s style really drew me in, and the gameplay kept me coming, and created a solid foundation for future games. And indeed, my enjoyment of this game lead me to play more and more of the genre, and i discovered more gems, like Them’s Fightin’ Herds and Arcana Hearts. Fantastic game.

    I think more games need in-depth tutorials and clever single-player design like Skullgirls. Virtua Fighter 4 and its expansion EVO came pretty close, showing players exactly how the game worked and how to both set up and avoid mixups, frame traps, and tick throws. Too bad that game didn't have online play and no one else within 30 miles of me played Virtua Fighter 4. But it's good to see other games following that style of instruction.

    This game is what taught me to git gud at combos. I can consistently pull off extensive combos with a few characters like Valentine and Filia. This really is one of my favourite games ever made...
    And then I went online and got obliterated in every match.

    Fantastic video as always! I love your ability to convey deep gameplay analysis. I am a huge fan of fighting games and I always find myself wishing there was a way for me to involve more friends.
    I like capcom fighters a lot. I have probably spent most of my time with Street Fighter 4. You have convinced me, I need to check out skullgirls now

    You're amazing and so smart. You deserve more subscribers. Most game design youtubers are just as smart as you, but they don't seem as relatable and funny as you.

    Dragon ball fighterz helped me understand the idea of extending combos, before I would just mash and spam. But after understanding combo extensions, I’ve really gotten into fighting games, I’m still pretty garbage, but just spending time labing with a character for combos has become something I really enjoy.
