  • I had some noise and grinding issues coming from my clutch on my 63 panhead, specifically when I came off from a stop going into first. You can see and hear it in the last video I posted. The problem started about a year ago and would be very intermittent. Usually going away when the bike was warmed up. But the problem persisted and was actually happening more often. The problem never happened going from first to second, or any other gear. Only from a stop.
I tried to fix the problem by replacing the primary chain, installing a hub keeper with snap rings so the hub wouldn’t walk, cleaned the plates over and over again, and also adjusted the clutch spring tension heavy to loose, but the problem kept happening.
I read an old thread on the hydra-glide forums where someone said not to use a heavy amount of grease on the hub bearings because it makes the hub lock up. What complete nonsense! :/ Someone messaged me on the forum and said they had the same problem when they removed the grey and installed the RED clutch plates. Oddly enough, that’s exactly what I had done a year ago. I saw some red plates on eBay for cheap and couldn’t resist, and I think it got me into this mess.
So here’s a video of me removing the red plates and installing the grey plates. Honestly, when your doing this, the entire operation should only take about 15 minutes.
You can make a special tool out of a couple of washers to keep the springs with the face plate on the cheap.
I’ll give an update if this solved my problem.
Tip: don’t over tighten the primary cover screws, they don’t need any torque and will easily strip.

The problem was with these clutch plates. These red and green plates are for later bikes. My issue was clutch chatter on take off. The solution was to put the original style clutch plates. That have rivits. The issue went away after I swapped these all out.
