It is surprisingly incredibly difficult to find a full video on drywall from step 1 - step 3+. So many of them just cover one step and as a beginner, I had NO clue what sequence of steps I should be doing. Thank you so much for making this video, breaking it all down, and giving the FULL spectrum of what the steps are. Seriously, I searched the internets for weeks to find this and I couldn't be more thankful!!
Who's giving these types of videos a thumbs down? He's essentially giving/telling us many years of experience at no cost to us.
Because it's not the best advice honestly, been doing this a very long time and lots of this is really situational, not saying he's bad or a bad teacher but there are lots of very complex materials in the trade that he didnt address, like the difference between mud weights, taping vs finishing muds, why adding water is important, I'm not gonna thumbs down but people watching should know they are gonna be in over their heads
@@quinnycoleman7214 most people watching this are doing a small project themselves. This info is perfect for that, and it does say "Beginner" in the title. Just because YOU know all the tricks of the trade, it does not mean most people even care to know them. I had 1 room to do and this video got me through it and I ended up with a very nice finish, so maybe understanding why I used plus 3 to finish really isn't that important since I have no plans to make a career out of it, just didn't want to pay someone 2500 dollars to do what cost me 250 to do myself.

@@licedmilk paper tape takes 2 to 3 tries for a beginner to learn and is better. I used scrap drywall and a 6 inch knife with this guy's advice and got it down enough to do an entire room, ceiling included, with a good finish. I think you don't give people enough credit. Most people are more able than you think. Why use the less good product as a beginner just because you are a beginner? It makes no sense to tell people that.
@@licedmilk I think if a person can't handle bedding the tape, they really should just hire someone to do it. My first time doing tape, I had it figured out. To be fair, I've worked in construction in the past and did similar things that required similar skillsets(scratchcoating, veneer stone installation, etc) so I was comfortable with using the knife, but if using simple hand tools is hard for someone, then they are better off not doing diy to begin with
So many haters just want people to think that drywall finish is some impossible thing to justify their career. Maybe someone learning from a CZcams video won’t get it right on the first try but stop hating on someone offering advice to those who choose to undertake their own project. It’s not rocket science folks, just takes practice after you get instructions on what to do. Take chances and save some money…Good video.

Doing my basement right now. Just finished tape coat and no it just doesn’t look like this guys. I can’t explain it. Going to be mudding and sanding for days.......

I’ve worked on drywall since I was 10 and now I’m 21. I have watched so many videos on how to drywall just to make see if people do it differently, but I notice that you guys are honestly the only ones who do it correctly.

I did my first nails when I was 5. Back then they didn't use screws. I'm 52 now. I started working with my dad at 15 but before then I'd helped here and there as a kid. Some of these videos are so cringe to watch. My dad started at the dawn of drywall so to say I learned old school is an understatement. I use a hawk, a 14" flat trowel and a 6" knife. That's it. I haven't touched my taping tools in ten years but I could still out pace a banjo with much better results. Honestly, I don't know where these people are learning these days, but they are seriously slow and sloppy. Around here there are a lot of trowel guys, which is fine. I'm just not that ambidextrous. There aren't very many hawk guys but the troughs are generally used by homeowners. I'd ditch the trough unless you're using it to feed gophers. I think you'll find you can get more material on your tools and run your seams much quicker. This guy had to load his 10' knife like 4 times to do what should have been done in one pass. That's my advice to you. If you're working piece work or by the job, you'll make more money.
I do everything the same as him besides with flats all you need is a 10 because if you wipe your edge right you won’t need a 12 to go over it I can see with a butt joint
You guys are great! Couple things... Need to tell beginning drywallers about "hot" mud. The "do it fast" temptation is huge for new mudders. I use small batches (just a pan full, no more) of 45 or 120 for my 1st coat on spaces, joints & screws. It gives me enough time to work but dries fast enough that I can apply the second coat the same day.
Things to remember with hot mud: SMALL Batches & never mix the crusties back into good mud. I keep a 2nd pan (I like plastic - easier to clean) to put scrapings into. Clean EVERYTHING really well before you make a new batch or it gets hard and you will NEVER get it off. 45 stays workable for about 30 min & 120 for about 90. Set a timer! It is harder than regular mud so it fills in spaces better but it is harder to sand too. If you practice before you actually do a wall, you can get the hang of it quickly & see how fast it set up. It will take you longer than you think it will if you are new to it. FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS on the bag or avoid all of this & use the premixed stuff y'all are using.
I hate sanding so I am super careful when mudding and take longer than most people do to avoid that.
The other things I do are:
(1) Run the corner of the knife on concrete real quick (sidewalk, garage floor, etc.. - it will leave a mark on the concrete so be discrete) ; just enough to get rid of the point, but not create a burr. It is a personal preference but it makes corners a breeze.
(2) Before I mud, I grab a phillips screwdriver & I run my knife over EVERY screw head. I listen for a "ting" sound from high screws. I can easily tighten them as final prep before I start mudding. Trying to do it while mudding slows me down & is super messy, but it NEEDS to be done. You can't leave high screw heads. They will always show, will tear your sand "paper" & the wall will look like crap.
(3) Wash your stuff quickly & DRY it quickly. EVERYTHING rusts & it rusts fast! Rust not only ruins your equipment, but it leave discolored streaks in any mudding you try to do later (i.e., the second & skim coats...).
(4) I set up a work light at a right angle to the wall while I am mudding & sanding so I get shadows from ridges, etc...
(5) DO NOT clean your stuff in the kitchen or bathroom sink... Mud, especially hot mud, will ruin your plumbing. First, scrape excess mud into a garbage bag & toss it out. Then scrub everything with a green scrubbie pad & dry it well with paper towels. Make sure you get EVERYTHING off if you are using hot mud or it can cause the next batch to harden too fast & you get lumps. Wash tools somewhere where drywall mud haze won't matter. There will be haze.
Final words of warning - Drywall dust & the edges of drywall will RUIN your floors! It is super gritty & will scratch everything. So DO NOT track it everywhere while you are working. Put an old rug at doorways to wipe your feet on. Close room doors so the dust doesn't float all over the rest of the house. It is very hard to get off of stuff. It is also awful for your lungs & eyes masks & glasses are a must. The shop vac is your friend.

So you mix the big bucket of mud goes bad in 45 minutes or just the mud you put into the box thin you hold?
@@maddydollear i think you are asking how much to mix. If you are using "hot mud" or quick drying mud, just what you can use in the time before it sets up. And in the pan you hold.
That's a really great job of explaining things. I have seen many guys just roll along and criticize even though they didnt explain it. This was well done. Great that you offer this to people. You and your wife are very easy to watch and follow. Some people seem almost like they dont want people to know the work well, almost like they are trying to remain the knowledgeable one...which is such a character flaw... thanks for telling it properly, and clearly. This was the best Ive seen so far, and I mean from sooo many videos. Well done you two, for real.

I’m planning on adding drywall to my den, this is gonna be my second diy project im doing in my house. I’m 17, have no idea how to do this, but your videos are very informative! Most videos on here use language and vocabulary I don’t understand, but you really word this so anybody can understand. It’s less intimidating and makes me feel a lot more confident in doing this. This is great. Your'e a good teacher! I would add to make sure you dust off the sanding dust after you sand or the primer won't adhere. If you just spray primer on top of that, nothing after will stick.

This video was EXTREMELY helpful! Best tips were the thickness of the mud and thinning it down for each layer, how to taper the joints, knocking down lips with your tool, and work hard to reduce work at the sanding step.

I've heard about adding soap. I have never added soap and i don't get those bdisappear. Plusubbles. Those bubbles are from the factory. I just add a little water and mix it and those bubbles disappear. Plus it's easier to apply with mud not so thick. Just don't make it so thin. You want thin creamy mud meat the final coats. You get that by adding more water than b4. Good tip is get an empty bucket and split your mud in half And only mix one bucket. It's good to keep a half bucket of the original mud just incase you add to much water you can just add more mud to your mix bucket.
Remember can always add more water so less is more. Add a little bit at a time till you think it's ok.

You make it look sooooo easy....I just helped my hubby drywall in a room and it's not this easy - and sanding is not fun. This just proves to me that people that work in construction are not paid enough. And I'll NEVER do this again. Great video - wish I'd seen it - probably wouldn't have even attempted this.

Been doing drywall for as long as I can remember, Family owned business mixed mud as a toddler LoL
The video is awesome. the only thing do any different is I fill any cracks (can't seem to hang the rock perfect ever !!!) then tape my Butt joints first running tape from flat seem to flat seem, then cover with taping my flats, over laping the Butt seem tape. Do the ceiling and lastly my vertical corners.

Love this wonderful video. I am about to tape and mud sheetrock in my master bathroom. My question is, after doing this part and sanding smooth, can I put wallpaper directly on the sheetrock or do I need to put something on the walls first before hanging the wallpaper? Thanks!

Thank you so much for these videos relating to drywall for beginners. My first time doing drywall work in my own home and this helped a ton. Also, someone told me to just wet the tape a bit prior to applying it but noticed you didn't. Should I avoid wetting the drywall tape? Thank you.
Hey X3, wetting the tape will help reduce bubbles (on the tape) IF you coat it before it dries. I only do this for patch work. On larger projects it tends to make a mess for little benefit. My two cents… thanks for the comment!

phranil mehta as far as drywall compound...I used multi purpose for the taping and first coat. For the the final skim coat I use light weight compound or plus 3.

Thanks Smoke Shop! No, but I use metal corner bead for my outside corners and screw it on rather than nailing 😉 I don’t screw them in at perfect 90’s. Give it a little crimp so your mud has a small valley to fill on each side. Hope that makes sense…
For finishing: You will want to use easy sand (90 min) or Durabond for your first coat. It comes in bags and you will need to mix it yourself. Follow the directions on how much water to add. It also sets fast so I would work with a third of a bucket at a time until you feel comfortable doing more. The last two coats can be all purpose and / or topping.
