The Biggest Mistake of My Life - Keg Update

- I developed a game changing product that I believe will revolutionize the way beer is brewed and served at home. The only problem is that it almost seriously injured me. Here's the story of how I lost $100,000 and almost went to the hospital.
The good news is that we've developed a safety system that will change the way tri-clamps are used not just in home brewing, but in any industry or scenario where tri-clamp fittings are used for pressure vessels. We've wrapped up resin prototyping, filed for a utility patent, and are on our way to making final draft parts and tools out of stainless steel.

An example of how business should be ran. With respect and honesty with the client.
agreed, its nice to see this
As a fellow Engineer, I love the integrity shown here. Although disappointing to yourselves, you found a massive issue that couldn’t be ignored and worked to fix it, in the end coming up with an impressive innovative solution. You only get better by learning from your mistakes. Awesome job everyone.
Happy you didn't actually hurt yourself mate
. Huge props for the way your going about this. It's tricky as a creator to show mistakes sometimes, doubly so when it's in relation to a product you have tons of resources already sunk into.
Much respect for being honest and transparent. Even more for developing a solid product to solve the problem!
Thanks, Jesse!
I've used a lot of different pressure vessels in this hobby, and all have that same risk of injury from flying lids. It's good to see that you spent the effort to find a way to mitigate it.
BTW, LOVE LOVE LOVE the simplicity and lower cost of single bucket style (non-conical) pressure fermenters, and yours looks so very nice.
Common Larry...I've been watching you for years! We all know what pressure vessels can do. A smart brewer like you knows to check the pressure first. No need to add extra hardware and confusion and cost. Darwin's law...the weak will be weeded out. Or something to that nature.
Now I want to order one. I love the fact that you came clean on this and stand by the product and would be excited to have one.
Team, I can completely sympathize with the pain you're going through with the production run from personal experience. Remedying fielded units is a nightmare. Delaying and correcting is absolutely the right move. The concept is solid and the potential is obvious. Keep doing what you are doing. You folks rock and I look forward to ordering my second keg!
I dont think people understand the fact there was nothing wrong with it BUT you still didnt want to put anyone in harms way is really unheard of these days. Bravo guys .
Transparency is the cornerstone of a good business. Well done
Stand up move Kyle. Too many businesses rush products with little regard for their customers. It’s clear this issue caused you significant stress and anxiety, but you persevered. Glad you weren’t hurt when that lid blew.
Not a single negative comment. Love it! Great company! Always loved your integrity and best customer service I’ve ever had. Keep up the great work!
Trailblazers in the industry. Having been injured in a distillery and sustained some serious burns from a triclamp under pressure (steam), I 100% respect this.
If more businesses would be like this it would be great for everyone and helps the community grow
I don't currently own any Clawhammer stuff, but this type of commitment to honesty, transparency, safety, and customer satisfaction will definitely move their products to the top of my list if they suit my future needs. Great job to y'all, empathy to folks waiting for product!
I wish all businesses would be this transparent. Been using your system for years. I’m proud to say I am a customer of yours. Ethics and safety first.
I already had made the decision that when I upgrade my current equipment it will be with Clawhammer products; this video simply reinforces my opinion that this company has the best products out there.
I've been considering getting into brewing again after a 12 year haitus, and have been evaluating where to buy my stuff. I think this just solidified a future purchase with you guys. Love seeing companies do the right thing.
Fair play to Clawhammer. Saw a problem. Dealt with it. Explained it. Not enough people like this in industry, never mind the homebrewing one.
Tough decision, I'm sure, but we all appreciate you guys making the right call. One of the reasons we all support you. Keep it up.
This is the best video, I’ve ever seen. This is a product I will purchase.
Claw hammer is now top of my list for brewing products.
Bravo, seeing a company do right by its customers, restores my faith in people.
You are selling these to homebrewers, who drink while they brew. 100% you just saved someone's eye/life. Worth it.
I can't compliment you and your team enough on your diligence and focus on safety for your customers. This isn't something that many companies these days would put even a moments thought into. Bravo.
Kyle and team...absolutely the BEST team out there for their honesty, sincerity, great quality equipment and great vids! Can't wait to order mine for my brewery in the coming months!
Glad to see you care about the home brewer!!!
The honesty in this video makes me want to purchase the product.
Have been watching from a distance, but time to enter the hobby is coming closer. I will for sure be spending my money here-thank you for your honesty.
As a project manager and amateur brewer, this was a really cool video. I'm glad youtube recommended it, and may be tempted to order my own keg. :p
Videos like this make me more secure in the fact that I bought a system from you and makes me more excited to get a couple fermenters as well. You guys care and that matters. Cheers to you all! Thanks for having your customer's backs!
Also, so someone who has almost seriously hurt himself with a pressurized projectile, I felt the look on your face in my bones. So scary and avoidable, but its so easy to get lost and forget a step. You guys really killed it again!
Best and coolest company in the homebrew / distilling space by far
Delays happen. Communication like this is key. I won't feel too bad now spending the extra for Clawhammer Supply products knowing that you are dedicated to making a great product and not just an acceptable one.
If I had pre-ordered one, this video would have definitely soothed any hard feelings regarding the delay.
I've never heard of Clawhammer, but I'm now a fan. Great job to everyone on the team for putting time and money into safety. Pressurized tri-clamps are not a joke. At one place I worked, we used high pressure clamps on a specific 8" port because someone in the past had gotten a skull fracture when the standard clamp failed.
Yikes!
Great CEO, Great Video! I wish all the best to the Clawhammer Team!
Random video from a creator I never saw before about a project that I have no use for...but damn, interesting, and it's good to see someone putting project safety at a place of importance.
I've been considering both the 120V brewing system and this kegmenter...I'm even more sold now than before. So many companies will just "damn the issues - make those sales!" - so glad you've more integrity than that. Keep up the solid work. You can expect my orders very soon.
Glad to hear that my fermenter will be even safer. How ever long it takes I’m not asking for a refund
Waiting on a great product is always better than a rushed product! Great transparency and great to see a company not only focusing on the bottom line. Well done!
I applaud you guys for making the right decision on this product.
Man! That was a close one! I'm glad you are OK. Also glad to see you take this issue so seriously and worked out a solution. As you say, most other companies would just slap a label on it and ship it.
There is so much to love about this video...
1. Most importantly, that Kyle wasn't injured and able to make the video.
2. The integrity - there are many reasons Brülosophy is happy to promote Clawhammer, and this is a big one.
3. The product - homebrewers have been talking about fermenter solutions for years, and Clawhammer actual created a product that we believe may very well revolutionize the way beer is fermented.
Kudos to the Clawhammer Supply team!!
Thanks guys!
Well done guys. As an adament brewer and a mechanincal engineer I know more than most what is required when it comes to safety. You have come up with a new product and unfortuntely found yourself with a new issue.... but have come up with a pretty good way around it with what you have to work with.
I applaud your transparency as a business and a designer. As a manufacturing engineer, this is a great example of Poka Yoke.
Holy shit, a company explaining why a delay is happening and allowing refunds.
Good freaking job.
I'm really amazed the straight forward style of recognizing and admitting a problem and not just charging forward profit minded. Exemplary business management, I salute you - Skål!
Great work everyone. High integrity means a lot these days. I really appreciate the innovation you went through to make this safe and I’m glad you were not harmed. I’m looking forward to purchasing one of these in the future! They look great. Keep going!
I have so much respect for the way you handled this situation. I am going to purchase one to support you and ethical business practices.
Great video and customer service. Honest company is always the best company to do business with.
Kyle, I got mad respect for y’all doing what your doing here. Not only are you ensuring the safety of your customers, you’re taking a huge hit financially to make things right. Based on what you explained in this video, you guys are going to have something revolutionary and I will for sure buy one in the future when I can afford it. I already use your all in one 10 gallon 120v system, and it’s amazing to say the least. Looking forward to when these come out and how they perform. Such a game changer indeed. Cheers
Sorry you had an “Oh shit!” moment. Very lucky indeed that end cap wizzed right past your face. Thank you for sharing with everyone as a reminder that pressure vessels are no joke, as you mentioned, especially when the compressed medium inside is a gas. I hope the interlock tri clamp doesn’t set you guys back too far and that people use it. I don’t see any other safety interlocks for this sorta thing from the other guys making pressure fermenters either, hopefully they catch on. Cheers
No apologies. Safety is paramount. Brilliant retrofit by the way. I'll pick one up when they are available. I worked for a period of time in my younger years as a fabricator machinist in a tool and die shop, among other places. It is easy to overlook complications of designs, because they are simply designs. When designs hit the proving ground is when good designs become great ones. Solid Works and AutoCad can only do so much, efficacy is not one of the things CAD programs can do. Cheers.
Really glad no-one was hurt and, like everyone else has said, inspirational how you run the company with integrity. Living in the UK means I miss out on your quality gear but I still enjoy your content. Keep it coming lads!
I have never heard of you... or your product. But after what I have just watched I am VERY impressed and am looking to get into the next round of kegs.
Way to go guys, not only great ingenuity but great integrity!
This makes me even more confident when ordering from Clawhammer! keep up the great work.
I appreciate the extra work you guys do and the attention to detail in your products. I can’t wait to get my two kegs and start doing 10gal batches on my clawhammer system.
Brilliant solution and a perfect example of professional integrity.
For anyone who has dealt with their support for their other products, their focus on providing the best product they can should not be a surprise.
I have had to work with them twice, once of the times was for an issue that I don't even believe was their fault/problem. I was just contacting them to find how I could order a replacement part.
In both cases they replaced the parts at no charge and basically no questions asked outside of sending a few photos.
Their brew systems are top quality and so is their support. I go out of my way to rave to others about them.
Thanks for the kind words!
Good on you for thinking of customers first!
Very impressive transparency on this one. What a great business.
Wow. I don't own any Clawhammer products, but after watching this I wish I did. It's amazing to see when a business shows genuine care for their customers. When the next round of ordering opens, sign me the fuck up!!
Glad you dodged a bullet and weren't hurt. But this initiative gives me even more respect for you guys and your business. Much love
It's an ingenious idea and I respect the hell out of your transparency. Thank you guys for what you're doing.
You are the real guardian angel of all homebrewers, worldwide! Even here in Brazil, far away from your products, I’m sure your innovative solution will reflect sometime on other brands and all will be safer thanks to your hard work!!! Congrats!!! I hope sometime you can sell to Brazil!
Badass. Kudos for stepping back and having a look at the problem and taking care of it, as opposed to just releasing it with a warning label. Now it makes me want these kegs for homebrewing!
Great idea and design, safety first especially if consuming the product while opening the keg. Well done.
It seems like an ingenious and well thought-out solution. If only all companies were this conscientious. Kudos! (I'm so glad no one was hurt.)
There have been several sankey keg deaths/injuries. One was here in Colorado. I think a similar mod should/could be done to those. I've refrained from going to those style for those types of reasons. Thanks for helping influence others. Nice work
Brulusopphy loves you guys
Woooo, glad you avoided that hitting your face! Great job keeping safety in mind. Cheers!
Always love it when I see a company thats thinks safety is more important than money. I will be ordering one of these fermentors in the future for sure.
Fantastic solution and one that immediately came to mind once the problem was described.
I've worked around low and high pressurized items in industrial environments in the military, aviation, machine shops, mechanic shops, and breweries to include my own pressure fermentation setup. There is always inherent danger and critical protocol to follow when working on such systems. While working on a pressurized system never stand in the ballistic zone of a pressurization hazard whether you know it is pressurized or not. Some of the systems I have worked on such as aircraft tires will erase your existence in the blink of an eye if mistakes are made. The innovation is great, and shows that you guys are thinking about the health and welfare of your end user, but a firm warning and training is the standard mitigation process across the world for multiple industries. I honestly don't mind the wait but would have been just as happy with my defective product delivered on schedule. If given the choice I would have accepted the risk. Still can't wait to get it.
I support innovation in safety, the solution/invention you guys have made with these safety triclamps is really good. I'm sorry that happened to you, I once took a 6" to 1.5" reducer bowl (@30psi) to the thigh because of the same mistake. Got distracted and didnt read the gauge.
An addition to your solution to solve this is to swap your 1.5" flat endcap to a 1.5" to 1/4" FNPT end cap with a 1/4" backmount pressure gauge. With your new clamp type there shouldnt be any issues with interference between the parts and the clamp.
You are doing the right thing. Safety first.
great example of professional integrity!
your misadventure makes me think of a scenario for a detective series like CSI! !
"the victim was killed not by firearm but by his fermenter......." 🤣😂😂
This is such an elegant solution. Nicely done.
As a safety engineer for the past 25+ years it is so heartwarming to see a company that is serious about the safety of their customers and takes the time and expense to make sure a product is as close to idiot proof as possible. I know where I’ll be ordering my home brew equipment!
Great company! I bought a 5 gallon system and the PID failed, they sent me a new one real quick. I also had an issue with the still sealing and then contacted them they sent me a new seal as well. On the fence about this kegmenter because I already have enough kegs. But to any new brewers - definitely skip the buckets or the glass carboys and just keg ferment, thank me later!
I appreciate the update video. But know. that Emmet was amazing when I emailed asking about the delay. He made sure I was OK waiting and offered me a refund if I was not OK waiting (I was). Your customer service. is excellent and I hope you are still able to make tons of money off these products and off your videos.
Appreciate the update guys! I do understand the issue, and even if it's already ''common knowledge'' for people that are used to handle TC fittings under pressure (I do work with unitanks as well) I do understand the fact that for many of your customers this will be an introduction to tri-clamp fittings, and you are essentially making it safe and sound for every experienced and un-experienced users, and really do appreciate the effort, and hey, you guys are experienced too and had an accident, so I'm actually happy to wait a bit longer and not asked for the refund.
Clawhammer is an absolutely amazing company. Who does this anymore? Never shop anywhere else! LOVE the setup I have! Thank you for all that you do!
Good on you for your integrity and transparency.
Respect for both laying it out as it was and actually coming up with a revised version of the tri-clamp system with safety in mind! That seriously has the potential to impact so many different industries that use tri clamp systems on equipment under pressure!
I would rather this than a dangerous product or any other further issues. It shows integrity and honesty. :)
Great engineering solution - well done - you deserve to succeed, J
Great video and product improvements, I'll be looking at one of these soon! Customer service that is TOP NOTCH there! You guys have earned my trust and $. 🍻
Clawhammer Supply - come for the beer and guys goofing off, stay for the world changing inventions!! And the beer
Absolutely awesome, cheers guys!
What a great solution to a tricky problem!
Upgrades look awesome guys!!! Safety and quality first, cheers 🍻
You guys are doing great. I was on the presale prior to November but emailed Emmit and I didn’t want to wait. I was refunded immediately. I’m now starting my own CZcams channel and hopefully in the near future I’ll order another one. Love you guys. You make good shit and I love my system. Keep up the good work!!
Guys! You are just great!! Example of integrity!! #Respect
I was thinking of preordering and never pulled the trigger. I most certainly will be doing so now.
Fantastic business model I absolutely loved the idea originally and obviously love the new update and of course your ethics are admirable I appreciate you guys cheers 🍻👍
Kudos to y’all for doing it right! Glad you didn’t get hurt Kyle. That could have been bad. God was looking out for you. Necessity is the mother of invention they say.
Good on you guys, caring about the safety of the product for people will pay dividens and, most importantly, trust in your company.
Incredible work. This shows how much this company cares about the products it makes and its customers. I bought a 10g electric system about 3 years ago and have loved it. My controller died about a year in and they sent me a new one free of charge. Haven't had any issues with the controller or system since and its made my brew day such as joy. I've been wanting to get into pressure fermentation and will 100% be buying multiple of these kegs. Thank for all your incredible work.
You definitely saved me a trip to the ER or worse. I've got the worst luck.
Very innovated design for safety. Smart and simple.
Clever, and very responsible of you, this is similar to professional brewery lockout systems or second man in place systems for safety, of which I am very much behind for home brewers. We don't need more risks, just more tasty beer.
Opening a keg at 20psi is a bit of a jump, opening the wrong valve or tc, even in s a small brewery will at the very least, waste hundreds in materials and production costs. At the worst destroy someones life. I think what you have come up with here is fairly elegant, cudos to you.
Absolutely brilliant marketing! You’re the man Kyle
Admire your honesty, transparency, and ingenuity.
Excellent creative solution!
