    I use semicen oats. Triple washed. Rinse them 2 times. Then follow pgt process. I sterilize in an oven dry. I can do about 30qt at a time. 1 hour 300f then 1.5 hour 250. A lot of ppl talk badly on oven tek but if you do it right you will never need a PC. I may get a couple jars contam out of 100. It works

    For WBS: if you constantly get burst grains towards the bottom, elevate them out of the water completely. Use a stainless circular 12" drying/steamer rack with at least 2in legs; will give enough clearance so that you can add enough water for the cook (including initial off-vent) and the jars won't be submerged

    I have done this tek with WBS. Works well, and there is a trick to get rid of the clumping at the bottom of the jar. First, you need some good quality oven mits with the heat guard where you won't feel how hot the jar is when it is time to shake. Tilt the jar gently upside down with one hand and gently knock the bottom of the jar so the clumped grains can drop, then shake from the sides and it will redistribute the moisture and everything! After the jars are fully cooled down you can then innoculate all on the same day!

    I love the no soak no summer tek. I do however rinse my grains first as well as periodically shaking during the cooling process on top of the hot shake. If you don't hot snake then they may not come completely apart later. Rinsing does help lower the clumping some.

I dish and some now with better results(less contam and/or soggy). And I use the water after the summer for agar and it works great. Plus the grains are used to feeding on the nutrient by the time it goes to grain and they just take off. agar is 50/50 bottle water/grain water.

Then I pour out the water(saving it for agar late) and put the grains onto a screen or towels. I mix them around every 15 mins or so until they're dry on the outside. Dirty jars dont have to be an issue. The dry/wet weight ratio is the only thing that matters so you can just quickly rinse off the grain / birdseed before putting them in jars and weighing out the rest of the water
    My recipe for WBS has been:
    - 300g dry bird seed / 1qt jar (I look for millet heavy feed with no cracked grain or corn)
    - Rinse all the grain in a strainer or bowl until the water is no longer too cloudy to see the bottom easily
    - 450g wet weight. Split grain between all jars and add water so that they each weigh out to 450g

    It seems to me that a hybrid of NSNS and traditional soak/simmer would be best. Why not still wash the grains before jarring them for the NSNS? Seems like you'd get the best of both, cleaner less sticky grain with the ease of sterilizing/cooking the jars at the same time. Also, with the traditional soak/simmer it seems very easy to overcook the grain if you're boiling it and then also steaming them for 90 mins

    I did ``no soak no simmer" method a few times. Here is what you didn't mention as a con -- with this method the moisture will not be distributed uniformly in the jar while cooking. This will make some grains to be overly moist and some overly dry (top vs bottom typically). After cooking it is too late to shake -- the dry grains will never get sufficiently hydrated. In my experience this method only works for fast colonizing beginner-friendly mushrooms like oysters or chestnuts. It did not work for Pioppinos or Lion's Mane or Wine caps.

I believe he said it 3 times. Not trying to be a dick, just gotta pay closer attention, and rewatch one or 2 x b4 attempting so u know you got everything.

    for those who wanna fill a the jars 3/4ths full once done use 300g millet to 169.8g of water.
    265 g / 150 ml = 300 g / X ml
    To solve for X (the amount of water needed in milliliters), we can cross-multiply and solve for X:
    265 g * X ml = 150 ml * 300 g
    X ≈ (150 ml * 300 g) / 265 g

    I tried this in 2lb filter patch bags with longer PC time, it comes out a little dry so I added an extra 40 ml H2O & all works out.
    guessing the bags lose more water than jars in the PC for 2 hours to 2.5 hours (90 mins never works for me personally)

    I have been using brown rice to grow psilocybe mushrooms mycelium, and I would like to know if you recommend this same technique with rice or recommend me more than use oats, millet or bird food. If so, which is more recommended? From already thank you very much. Greetings from Argentina!

    I am using oats - trying for 45-50% moisture. Nominal moisture content for the dry oats is 10% so basically adding an equivalent amount of water minus 10-15% - 500g oats 425-450g water. Is you water addition based on the moisture content of the substrate or is there another issue to keep in mind w WBS etc. I am doing various oyster mushroom species.

    These amounts have worked PERFECT every time for Red/White oats and Rye grain...
    Ratio by weight:
    65%water : 100%grain
    Half gallon (64oz)
    460g oats
    300g water
    Pressure cook 90min at 15psi
    Quart Jar (32oz)
    230g oats
    150g water
    Pressure cook 90min at 15psi
    Pint jar (16oz)
    115g oats
    75g water
    Pressure cook 90min at 15psi

      @modeob88 Před rokem

      Its interesting that you are proposing a -> 1,5:1 (oats: water) ratio but Philly recommends 1:1,16 (oats:water) (more water than oats )

    • @__-pl3jg
      @__-pl3jg Před rokem

      @@modeob88 - I just double checked my notes. Yup, those measurements are accurate. If your grain is SUPER dry you may need to add a little more water. But, that can be injected into the jar later if needed using bacteriostatic water. Philly has a habit of not giving correct amounts in his videos....Such as his video on Coir substrate. The amounts provided are dead wrong. I dont understand why his measurements are so off 🤷‍♂️.
      Water:oats = 65%:100% ratio. Whatever your oats weigh, your water should weigh 65% of what the oats weigh. The finished product will increase in volume by about 30%. For example if you use 1L of oats by volume, after adding water and pressure canning, the volume will now be roughly 1.3L inside your jar or bag.

    • @modeob88
      @modeob88 Před rokem +1

      @@__-pl3jg But that is not what are you saying on the previous comment:
      For example (16oz jar)
      115g oats ----> 115g * 0.533 = 61,29 g water -> and you say 75g water.
      Sorry for being so picky, I've been failing in relation to humidity and I'm looking to standardize the process

    • @__-pl3jg
      @__-pl3jg Před rokem +1

      @@modeob88 Thanks for pointing out my mistake. It looks like I was misreading my calculator app. I inputted "from 75 to 115" which outputted 53.3%. But now I realize its telling me the difference between the 2 numbers is 40 which hapoens to be 53.3% of 75, lol. Thats my bad.
      For clarification.....The original quantities are correct but the percentage ratio I shared is incorrect. I've personally confirmed the weights are correct with my last batch. The only problem I had was with my rye grain which came out a little dryer than needed but I simply injected some extra water a few days after pressure cooking which seemed to work well. It's possible the rye grain had lower humidity than the red and white wheat berries when beginning.
      Keep in mind also that these ratios may be different if using bags instead of jars. I've seen a lot of people use 75%water:100%grain when using grow bags. I haven't used those before so I have to assume they're telling the truth and some of the moisture is escaping the bag during the heating process.

    • @modeob88
      @modeob88 Před rokem

      @@__-pl3jg Great thanks for the fast response, in summary we can say the correct ratio is -> 1,53:1 (oats:water) (grams)
