Atsushi Kaneko is a mangaka known for his work on Bambi, Soil, Wet Moon or Deathco. With a singular style rallying strong influences that range from punk rock and cinema to lowbrow art, Kaneko created his own universe, with themes including rage, loss of control and an adversity against the world. His passion for cinema also led him to direct “Mushi”, a segment part of the anthology film “Rampo Noir”, where he leveraged his past mangaka experience, which in turn influenced his manga career onwards.
Working completely alone, Kaneko will introduce us to his process and the balance he creates with his free time, as we followed him to a rock concert, one his DJ events or a dinner with friends, while he also tries to keep an open window on the world walking alongside Meguro river.

I've met him in person before, he really is an amazing and super down to earth artist. I hope you will support his works!
How'd you meet him?
@@AlmightyNata at a small animation/comic festival in Denmark~
I will!
Thats amazing. I wish i could meet naruto's creator and my 2 big idols: hideo kojima and Yoji shinkawa
i once met this Limmy guy at a charity once, he's surprisingly down to earth, and very FUNNY too.
English and French subtitles are available under the “CC” menu. Portuguese, Russian and Spanish subtitles have also been made available through Community Contributions, which are also open for additional language submissions. Thank you for following Archipel!
Colocarán los subtitulos en español?
Spanish please!!
Thx you so much for the french subtitles and for the video. Arigato !
Thank you for the amazing work and effort you guys put into your videos.
You guys do such awesome work, I appreciate all of your documentaries and how they highlight such amazing artists across so many mediums!
An episode I would love to see in this series is one featuring Tetsuya Nomura. His work has had a huge influence on me since childhood, and a major source of inspiration. It would be so great if you could do an interview with him.
Soil is absolutely one of the craziest manga i've ever read, this guy is a legend.
The tone and pacing of your videos are unmatched on CZcams. Thank you.
Thank you - it means a lot to us!
Thanks for this beautiful content. You may consider to add your Patreon link at the end, or at least in your description box. Keep up the great work!
Hey Raul!
@Hinx Arcade On one hand it's true, on the other hand love doesn't buy us food :)
@@ArchipelDocumentaries make a video about Treviño, mangaka artist from Mexico
@@JuanAntonio-wj2rv read their description on "about", they only do documentaries about Japanese artist
I'm so happy that Dororo is finally getting the attention it deserves in the recent animation and the reimagined adaptation by Atsushi Kaneko. It's definitely one of my most adored of Osamu Tezuka's works.
It's my least favorite of his works, lol. The concept was cool but it didn't really go anywhere.
i read dororo after being disappointed with demon slayer as it seemed similar, hoping it would be different i was pleasantly surprised with how good it was
Abraços do Brasil
Obrigado!
Disse tudo que eu tinha pra dizer. Conteúdo fantástico.
Eu tô esperando faz meses a Darkside publicar Deathco aqui
I've only read Wet Moon, but one can deduce a lot from this video. I think most mangaka around his generation want to express that feeling of high individuality with the " one against the whole world" quote. Also, I can see many similarities with mangakas in Naoki Urusawa's Manben where for example Inio Asano says that he wants to create never before seen images or how he loves the rock movement like Takahashi Tsutomu. Some interesting tidbits throughout the video were that he is a fan of A Clockwork Orange, which seems obvious once one considers his work, although usually people don't take into account western influences for mangaka; I didn't know that he was also involved with a movie (beside the cancelled Wet Moon). The video became really interesting for me when he is at the bar and talks with colleagues and friends. For example I didn't know that he was working on a Dororo manga (how strange). Also, I like the call backs to Terada and whoever reads this should check out this channel's video on him; but in consideration of Terada, when they mentioned Taiyo Matsumoto I feel like toco will/ should do a video on him since he has a new manga incoming.
A Matsumoto video would be awesome!
Woah Taiyo has a new manga coming out?
I have never heard of this Mangaka but holy heck am I glad I know now! His art is right up my alley and he's a fan of the Sex Pistols and Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange?! Thanks for introducing me to this man, I'll definitely be checking out his works. Keep up the fantastic work Archipel! Much love! 🖤
Edit: And now I learned he's also working on Dororo?!! Love this guy more and more!
Thank you, glad we could help :)
what an interesting conversation they're having at the yakitori place. what i wouldn't give to know a group like that to discuss manga with irl
this was an interesting video, it was nice to see his origins. i also found it interesting how he is able to do such good art using an ipad, kinda reminded me of another artist named sae jin, who also used ipad for a time to make great works. another thing of note was learning a bit about dororo and how black jack got started, as well as he draws the hair first, i tend to do the same in my art. anyway nice video; keep up the good work!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed!
what kind of pencil was he using there, i never seen it before. it's not a regular apple pencil
For those on the search for the music that starts at 14:28 -> A song for the shy moon by Oran (there is only a full album video on youtube you‘ll find it there)
Thank you for doing these on mangaka, they are so fascinating. It's a shame none of Atsushi Kaneko's works are published in English, someone needs to get on that!
Seriously though, I would love to film these for my career, keep this going!
Thanks for watching.
Archipel, you guys really rock! ;D
Its a thing that i also noticed when he says that his style changed while he change the theme of his mangas. I think its the vision we want. Like 3d when we create an atmosphere with an different render. Each render is destined to each vision you want and the atmosphere you want to show. If its dark, mistery or very raimbow,happy...
Thank you!
his style is like illustration in punk rock poster :D realy cool
In love with this channel! This whole channel is better at making these interview/ documentaries-a like of videos muuucchhh better than TV does! The way you shoot the vids makes it cinematic and yet the when the mangakas speak, it gets to your heart! Love this channel! Pls dont stop!!!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻☺️😆
Thanks for the kind word 🙏
Merci beaucoup!
For anyone watching, Soil is one of the best mindfuck weird but awesome mangas I've ever read, from Kaneko. Very worth checking out.
Fantastic video, the last ten minutes are brilliantly filmed and edited together, its like a scene from a nouvelle vague film
I cant thank you enough for making this channel and uploading everytime. Thank you so much for the awesome contents.
Thanks for the kind word!

Wow incredible as always! Thank you for making these videos! I'm definitely gonna check this mangaka out, his works look very interesting and unique.
Thank you!
Wow received so much history at the end 😁 thanks
Merci!
Best thing I've watched on the toob in ages. Fascinating to get an insight. Thanks, and please make more, if possible! 😎
Content, pace, filming, all exceptional
Thank you for this wonderful video! ✊❤️
Amazing work again, the story about Tezuka broke my heart.
Thank you, the Tezuka came quite unexpectedly for us but we're glad we could share it!
@@ArchipelDocumentaries Mr Atsushi Kaneko editor seems to have a lot of good inside story.
I would watch a pièce about him just remembering stuff ahah.
This is one of my favorite videos on the internet. He figured out life.
I can thank enough when mangakas are willing to show their faces and talk about their processes and influences when creating stories. Bambi is fun as hell and Soil is as legendary and memorable as cosmic horror can get, absolutely love Atsushi's work
soil IMO is one of the most mindblowing manga i've ever read, kudos to mr.atsushi
Love this CZcams Channel! without them I wouldn't know half the people on here
Thank you!
I had no idea who he was, then thanks to this amazing video-interview I got the whole Bambi first and now I started Wet Moon. Looking forward to read more works and for his upcoming Dororo revisitation, I loved the original and I can't wait to see what he will come up with.
Glad we could help you discover his work!
Found Deathco by happenstance while searching through Japanese fanart and was immediately hooked.

I LOVE this man's soul.
I really like his Soil comics, wish it was officially released in English.
I went to Kinokuniya in Edgewater, NJ, yesterday with the sole purpose of obtaining a few of Atsushi Kaneko's books. Not a single one available there. Amazon.com has a handful, but seemingly mostly from European publishers. I guess Amazon.jp is an option... maybe Kinokuniya in NYC. hopefully. Brilliant little documentary. thank you for posting!
Hope you got to find them!
BRAVO !!...
