For future reference, it's also a good idea to take saccharomyces boulardii, this is a beneficial yeast that is very shelf stable and obviously is not affected by antibiotics, it preserves the butyrate production and hence protects your gut to some extent during antibiotics. I took antibiotics for a week after wisdom teeth issue, and I had no side effects, no microbiome issues afterwards.

I know from experience that alcohol will destroy your gut bacteria. I found out by drinking vodka on a regular basis and then I started getting bloated all the time. It was in a word, embarrassing. Grains too from eating lots of corn chip products and sugar too. I agree on all of those specifically, and acid reductors too. I understand no sugar, no starches, etc. will be the best thing I can do for my microbiome. However, is it also a plus to eat real yogurt and fermented foods like sauerkraut, real fermented pickles (not just ones you buy at store in vinegar)? I was told by a friend I should also add a tablespoon of fermented pickle juice to my cup of bone broth (when its heated up and ready to eat). I don't like fermented foods so they thought that would help me get more fermented juices into my system. Good idea or waste of time?

I went to the doctor recently because I suspected either a kidney stone or UTI. I mentioned a UTI I had almost 30 years ago that was very bad and almost killed me so he gave me a shot of rocefin (sp.) and prescribed two more antibiotics! I didn’t take the other two. A month later I was experiencing a great deal of pain which turned out to be a stone. The ER doctor applauded me for not taking the other two antibiotics. He said young doctors and some old ones prescribe them unnecessarily. I had just started my ketovore journey and felt that one shot set me back horribly but I pushed through it and feel great now.

Thanks for this Dr. Berry and I know you have an audience who is well up to speed on optimum health but I am stunned that some people I speak with do not realize Breads and Pasta = sugar. Not sweet but breaks down that way. I've been looking at those the same as candy for years. Potatoes too. And carrots even. Beets BUT those last 3 I don't eliminate completely. Good stuff in them. Bottom line sugar feeds the bad bacteria in the gut. I tell my 7 year old to stop feeding the bad guys! Or better yet ask him "Do you want to feed the good guys or the bad guys?" Good luck!

I was hoping you'd talk more about lacto-fermentation, the way our ancestors preserved foods before refrigeration. It's easy to do at home. The bacteria feed on the starches, so even if you start with a starchy vegetable, once we eat it, the starch is greatly reduced. Plus, we eat those beneficial bacteria at the same time to refresh our gut microbiome. I have noticed that as I weaned myself off of sugars, I learned to appreciate the sour flavors in these lacto-fermented foods more.

Good question. I’ve had sibo for years, have finally started to get better by increasing my stomach acid. I was on acid blockers for years which kept sibo going strong. Low fodmap diets are not meant to live on but it does give relief. The trick is treating the root cause of sibo to get rid of sibo. Mine was low stomach acid and no gallbladder. I take apple cider vinegar digestive pills before eating and sometimes a gallbladder digestive pill after eating. The other key is to follow more of an intermittent fasting schedule. Have 12 hours from last eating to breakfast the next day and have 3-4 hours between meals during your eating window. This allows the digestive process to get through its complete cycle and keeps insulin response lower. Not snacking is big and sticking to just water or add only lemon between meals while treating sibo is important. I hope this helps.
