Ugh yes. My ex used to do this - would outright bully me, demean me, and say racist/sexist things to me but then got angry when I got offended or hurt. He convinced me I was being uptight and overreacting. I feel like this is such a common abuse tactic and the bride probably fell for it, given how she talks about herself so negatively in her own vows
They’re raising two daughters, and this is how he chooses to speak to their mother on their wedding day. Deplorable.

the fact that the bride said “i know i’m not the most beautiful…” is a red flag of emotional abuse. “i didn’t think i was good enough for you, but you graced me with your presence…” basically. very sad

I wouldn’t say it’s emotional abuse but more low self esteem. And I was with a person before like that and no matter how much I said she was beautiful or supported her in that realm, she felt she wasn’t “physically beautiful.” As far as his vows to her? Yikes. But it’s not fair to assume that he’s emotionally abusive or unavailable off of one video. He definitely doesn’t have the best awareness.

It's probably just speculation, but it looked like one of those, "I don't want to make a big deal out of it" or "I don't think it's that funny but I was taught to just laugh and brush off these things" laughs. it didn't feel like she was laughing at the "humor" of the "joke". I wouldn't be surprised if she divorces him. The entire vow just sounded like, "I like you because of the sex." Even that one heartfelt moment was quickly overshadowed and just felt like a throwaway.

That's the part that made me think he's actually not nice to her most of the time. Abusive relationships literally rewire your brain and they do not start off like this. It's a slow burn. You really feel like it's you and your partner against the world and everyone else just doesn't understand your love. And the good times are so incredibly good that you can pretend they make up for the bad or rationalize that somehow with big highs come big lows.
Saying that shit as a joke with your wife (or serious if you're both sexual together a lot and feel the same way) is fine. Saying it with other people around is weird. Saying it in front of family is incredibly cringe. Saying it in front of both of your entire families at a wedding is perhaps the least self-aware thing ever. How is he not humiliated??

The thing that I extra disliked wasn't even just the very sexual nature of the vows (which were a gross thing to say in front of your mom) but the way in which he only discussed her in ways that benefitted him. He said 'to keep me happy you need to feed me which you need to work on' which frames her as needing to serve him, while she basically apologized for not doing exactly what he wants
this reminds me of the way my ex would treat me. if i married him i can assure he would say something along the line of these vows. it’s so demeaning. he saw me as an object and it is so clear that he sees this poor woman as one too. i hope she will recognize her worth and move on. this is heartbreaking to watch

Yeah, I really feel that as every guy, especially the last one, treated me like this. Whatever drives us internally to make excuses for a partner's behavior or treatment in order to receive "love" when we deem ourselves unworthy is truly heartbreaking.

What breaks my heart the most is how her vows talked about how much she loves him, how she cherish the life they made while his only shows his interest in sex. There isn't anything in his words that make me believe he loves and honors her.
I had a friend whose boyfriend used to joke about pushing her down the stairs and kicking or punching her in the stomach if she ever got pregnant. He also used to talk openly about their sex life and joke about how his little brother would wait and watch from the closet while they did it. He made so many horrible comments about her and her body in front of her, her friends, and his friends. It was incredibly clear that these kinds of jokes and conversations made her deeply uncomfortable, but she never said anything. She would just smile and playfully roll her eyes at him. She changed so much about herself to make herself palatable for him. They’re still together 3 years later and I feel fairly certain this is the BOY she’ll settle for and end up with. It’s so sad watching such a smart, funny, beautiful young woman grow to believe she deserves that kind of treatment. I think it speaks to a larger issue of how we condition people socialized as women to interact with people socialized as men. They’re allowed to treat us any way they please and we must smile and shut up about it.
The wedding vows reminds me of when I was a teenager and "not like other girls" pick me kinda person. I would go along with shitty sexist jokes because I wanted to be one of the cool girls, not one of those uptight girls who couldn't take a joke. When I matured and actually developed self-esteem, I stopped being like that and dated people that respected me. It kinda feels like she never left that phase because she never dated anyone else after highschool, and thinks this is as good as it gets.
