      Yes, I can't agree more. Leo2 sound is nice, but it's far from the epic sounding Leo1. Especially the start-up is fabel'tastic, when the "turbines" spools up... mmm...
      The sound in "The Field" is pure awesome-sauce, and the "sound-disperser" make it fairly difficult to allocate before it's in your face. Former "panzerjaeger" here, so have spent a decent amount of time "hunting" these big cats.

    In the mid-eighties I was a tank commander in the Dutch army on this beauty. What people often don't realize is that sometimes we lived on it for a whole month, especially during exercises in Germany. Driving, shooting, cooking, this was actually our home. The four of us slept on it too, on the back, just above the engine, so we had to be careful not to spill too much diesel when refueling, usually manually with jery cans. I've done a lot of things since then, but those days were the best days of my life.

    It's interesting how the A2 version increased the turret protection so an update program was started to bring the earlier A1 turrets to the same protection level, which resulted in those turrets with addons on the sides, while the A3 and A4 radically changed the turret style, but in the end the "most advanced" version, the A5, was still built on those early A1 turrets with addon plates.

      Between 1974 and 1977, all of the machines in the first four batches were brought to the same Leopard 1A1A1 standard, and given additional turret armour developed by Blohm & Voss. A further upgrade in the 1980s added leftover image-intensifier night sights, which were being handed down from the Leopard 2 as they were themselves upgraded. The PZB 200 image intensification system was mounted in a large box on the upper right of the gun, creating the Leopard 1A1A2. A further upgrade with SEM80/90 all-digital radios created the Leopard 1A1A3. Later improvements to the image intensifier created the Leopard 1A1A4.(wiki)

    To me, this was a smarter design than most other tanks of it’s era. Without armor developed to defeat anti-tank rounds at that time, why not just give it good protection against small arms fire, give it superior...well, everything else, and roll out? I would even go as far to say that in many ways, it was a generation ahead of other tanks at that time. Many of its basic design characteristics have been copied, carried over and improved on in modern tanks throughout the world. It’s a classic beauty and it’s probably my favorite tank.

    Speaking from a Tank Destroyer point of view, the Leopard II is the one I won't look forward to engaging, that beast is hard to kill! I only have 3 "first round kill" points that're 16" in diameter and it can shoot on the move so the crews know their chances of survival are extremely high if they haul ass. And I remember the first M1 Abrams tanks in 1984-85 as they flew past me when I was doing 55!!!! Not kidding! They quickly put the governors way down but it's easy to remedy, lol.
    For the most part I drove the M-113 and M-901 ITV and they're simple to drive, especially at your age. In fact, have you ever thought about joining my Army? As a Retired Infantryman, you would be welcomed. I hate to admit it though but, most Grunts are hound dogs, lol, just be ready for some funny stuff but they will not cross the line with you, just kick them in the nuts if they do because if you don't, the rest of your platoon will when they get wind of what someone said or did to you! We do the same for male Soldiers as well, it's not because you're a chick. And every Sniper knows ( read between the lines Panzerfrau) that women make the best Snipers due to low muscle mass. Muscles always betray Snipers.

    To understand the Leopard 1, you need to realise the battlefield it was designed for!
    The Leopard is designed for the West German Autobahn system, which is build for high speed road transport. The Leo 1 is build to be the armoured fist that can move swiftly to where a soviet break through occured - and stop the rot. The enemy would basically move through terrain - which genrally halves speed and range.
    The other thing that is remarkable with the Leo 1 is its repairability - if it has an engine break down - and even Mercedes engines do have a problem with being shot at. In case of a breakdown the recovery vehicle would be close at hand - with a spare engine - change the engine and the tank is good to go. The engine would then be driven to a place where the mechanics could repair the engine - with proper tools.
    Germans are very practical people and you never find a German tourist without a first aid kit. OK - major brain surgery is not going to happen at the road side. If you have ever driven in Germany? Then you'll see the cars forming a lane for the ambulance. They fricking just do it! So wartime traffic jams would not occur - they all know what will happen to your tin-foil motor if a Leopard 1 runs OVER it.

    • @mbr5742
      @mbr5742 Před 4 lety +2

      German CARs carry a first aid kit because it is the law, not because people are smarter/more practical. Check for presence and expiration date of the thing is part of the mandatory once every two years safety inspection aka TÜV. And the repair shop/dealership (Many german car dealerships have a repair shop for the brands they sell) will automatically replace expired/no longer law compliant kits in the pre TÜV check unless you explicitly stop them. Just like they fill up the water for the whipers (Yes, those are checked for function)
      Lanes - no, no longer done. Major problem these days. Rescue services complain about it, punishments have been increased
