It's always funny when they mention the mechanical shifters almost like they're an afterthought even though that's what the vast majority of bikes use.
I cannot stress how much I wanted a series like this!
This is basically compilation of all old maintenance videos... it's good though...but that is just best( presented by Jon cannings)
I love the idea of this series (and will be sure to follow along) let's be serious, those who would benefit most from this aren't likely to be running Di2s or have a proprietary aero seat post. The Orbea is a cracking bike to be sure, but something fully mechanical with standard fittings would benefit the non-mechanics most when trying to replicate what they see in the video.
Rim brakes - the ‘other’ braking option :-(
If they had this kind of class in school, I would have been the first one to sign-up.
I dropped the hint a couple of weeks ago that if my kids would be kind enough and would like to buy me a father's day present this year then I'd really appreciate the GCN maintenance book. I saw my wife write it down so it's looking good 🤞😄
nice!!!!!!!!!!!
Good luck finding a Phillips screw on a bicycle! They are JIS screws, and when I started using the right screwdriver, it was a revelation. (Campagnolo only used slotted screws, hex or Torx.)
Nice video, everyone has to start somewhere. This i certanly a series i would have liked back in the day when I first startet at doing my own maintenance!
Alex as a mechanic? Best person for the job!
Seriously, this is great. Thanks Alex! Can’t wait for the rest of the series. 🙏
Glad you guys brining this series!
I was once scared to repair my bike and did not have any special tools.
Now days I wish I learned it sooner!
No more paying ridiculous prices to get your bike fixed no more waiting!
it's good to be able to perform at least a few basic things. Especially because of waiting. If your Bike doesn't get fixed the same day, you are screwed, when you use that thing to commute. And getting stuck in the middle of nowhere also kinda sucks. With a basic minitoolkit and the knowledge, you will be able to fix or at least bodge most issues. Doesn't need to be pretty, just needs to get the job done, until you can fix it properly.
That’s just what I needed! I have the book and basic tools but lacking some on the vocabulary in English (#frenchborn 🤣). Thanks Alex and @GCNTech! Best resource for a newbie cyclist learning everything during lockdown. 👍
I’m grateful I knew all that already... getting the front mech (derailleur) to behave properly is an entirely different story. Looking forward to the series. Thanks Alex.
And my own copy of the book just arrived last week 😍 perfect!
Thought Hank would be doing the crash courses with all his experience!😄
Great class! Looking forward to more, glad there was no homework, more time for riding!
Honestly, great timing for this. :-)
Alex’s workshop is looking awesome!
Great thanks. Looking forward to the next ones
Awesome series. Just what I needed
Good luck with the BB episode 😂😂
Exactly 😀
featuring Hambini as a special guest!
Lol
I welcome the new series, it has promise. However the most glaring omission from Episode 1 is that Shimano doesn't use Phillips head (or Pozidrive) screws to adjust their derailleurs. The cross-headed screws Shimano use are Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS). JIS screwdrivers should be a part of the toolkit of anyone who works on Japanese parts.
Excellent! Just what I needed
Can't wait for the next installment.
I'm American, but I have to say, "This is a crackin' video!" and I look forward to the series!
Giving the audience what they want! Yes!
Slim, QUIET, works great. I wanted modern and out of the way. This is it!
Hi Alex, glad to see you doing this series. I'm just wondering how deep you're going to go with explanation of different standards of components in these videos. I'd like to build my own bike in the future and at the moment can't get my head over of some component standards and their compatibility plus all the different tools to screw/unscrew these. I'd be very grateful if you could insert such segments into this series. Cheers, Foxo
You definitely sold me on the book ❤
This very basic but a good idea, good work
Love this
This is much needed, current knowledge is zero 😂 Would like to be able to perform minor maintenance things myself.
Can you just for sake of continuity keep it biggie smalls.. the whole community has to abide by it when sending in photos :D
epic intro! Keep at it guys! 🥰😎😁
Great idea!
yes!
Would love an updated bar tape guide using flat bars and how to get a super clean finish.
Really useful!
Great idea!!! But a little too shallow for a start :-( The amount of details of what makes up a bicycle was too low. I would have mentioned the frame (as a whole and than its parts) cranks, wheels, tyres to name a few. I hope the level will go up as the series progresses...
Rim brakes is not the "other" braking option, it is the main one.
It would be great to see something about common causes of punctures / blowouts, unrelated to actually having something come through a tyre, especially with the diff types of tyres, rims and tubes - e.g. improper fit, damage during installation, under/over inflation, etc.
Thank yo, thank you
I need this
Lets start from the begining. Brittish cotter pin crank removal.
I watched the video but my bike has lots of wires hanging out of it. should I cut them off before riding?
I'm hoping you touch on "if you're new to carbon bikes, here's some tips to help you not break it..." stuff :)
Can you mention where can the book be purchased from please. Thanks
Should definitely use more of a mid range bike. Alot of people use bikes without disc brakes or different shifters.
Everything you need to know has already been put on you tube by Park tools and GCN previously by John and Simon. New presenter same content it’s like the BBC and Delia’s how to cook. 8 series start with the perfect way to boil an egg.
Book is showing out of stock, will you be getting some more in?
Could you specify the model of the handlebar?
#askgcntech are the black marks on the TRP 29 disc brake rotor wear indicators??
The book is out of stock. 😔
Any idea when it will be restocked?
Just started watching but already waiting for Si's wd40 mainenance tips.
Does this have a kick stand?
I bought a Shimano small grease gun, and now I cannot find a suitable grease tube for it M14 thread, bummer.
This is awesome, honestly, but this makes me wonder. How does someone become a bike mechanic? It's a bit of a dream of mine, I've been working on my own bikes for a couple of years now, i got all the basic tools and stuff but how exactly do you become a "mechanic"? Are there courses or certifications to get? Do you just go at your local bike shop and beg them to teach you the art? I'm from italy btw if that makes any difference
Yes, bike technician courses and certifications do exist. One way to start is to see if any of your local bike shops don't mind taking in another mechanic (that's how I got my job).
My wife bought the book and hasn't opened it up yet. I'm going to assign this video as homework.
The need for a 13mm allen key is relevant, and allen key manufacturers need to get this info also so they include them in a set.
Where everywhere do you need size 13? Genuinely curious.
@@lukaskaciasvili9351 cassette hubs
@@fergusdenoon1255 freehub body - but am not sure if it makes any sense to have 13mm allen key as part of default allen key sets for quite rare instance of user removing hreehub body. Those who would actually do it themselves can just buy 1 themselves and throw it in the toolbox. But as part of default set it would only make whole set much heavier and bulkier.
@@lukaskaciasvili9351yeah, the point I'm making is you an pick up a set of Allen keys for a few quid, (2-10mm) yet I had to pay £13 for 1 13mm allen key simply because they don't come in a standard set.
Where can I buy the book?
lol you should of probably used a more mid range bike for your overall example
Oh no. You've run out of the road maintenance book. When will you get it back in?
How can I get the book ?
Shame you did not mention JIS screwdrivers. Shimano !
You don't mention JIS screws, but I believe they are found on old Shimano limit screws? I'm I correct. Or are these just Philips screws?
Oh, and great video and book! I've done some bike maintenance for myself and some friends because of it 🤘
Yes, older Shimano components do use JIS screws.
@@yonglingng5640 thanks! Now I only need to find the correct screwdriver 😂
#askgcntech Hi guys! In the market for a new road bike (n+1 😉) but given the current market options are limited. One store recommended I size up to a larger size to get more stack to match my current bike (I’m getting older) but that puts me into the wrong size as recommended by the manufacturer.
Local stores are all out of bikes so I’m looking online and won’t be able to test ride before I buy. Thoughts? Thanks!!
I would be so much better at this if this video was in 4k resolution!
Man sold out of books, your giving a class on Maintenance...you guys are starting to act like the American Eduction system. When will book be in stock?
#lessdirtlessweight !
There are more than three types of screwdriver interfaces, Alex. You missed out Robertson, the best type. But to be honest, I admit you're unlikely to find them on a bike. We can blame Henry Ford for that. They do remain popular in Canada. A British company, Screwfix, makes them as well, due to demand from UK-based carpenters who had worked in Canada.
The pizza cutter goes in the kitchen, not the shop
Lol pick tools up. Me with a big full toolbox and setup
That bike you're working on is a different colour from the one in the book - is the maintenance still the same? ;-)
Both bikes use hydraulic disc brakes and electronic shifting, so basically, yes.
Wherez ollie
Alex, you moved to fast through the frame. Most will figure out what the seat tube is but not one newbie will know what a seat or chain stay is, slow your row! :)
I thought you were gonna show me how to crash
Nice video, thank you , but again, we want Ollie back!

Alex: Don’t worry, you don’t need this book...
Also Alex: open the page 18....
This video title is for EVVERRYYONEE to click and watch !!! 👍👍👍
God can do anything and anyone is welcome to go to church.
DO NOT USE HAND TOOLS!!!! ITS A HUGE WASTE OF FUCKING TIME!!! Get ratchets! And metric heads!!! DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH FUCKING HAND TOOLS!!
Wow....much too simple beyond any kid fixing their first bike! I don’t think there is a single bike issue that isn’t available on CZcams, and I must say this is a real disappointment when compared with the quality of the other videos! Bottom bracket, cassette nut and chain whip are probably the only specialist tools you might not have lying round.
Now i see for whom gcn made videos, for 50iq ppl. "LOOK THIS IS SCREWDRIVER, THIS IS SADDLE"
Some people really don't know how to use tools, like a ratchet wrench.
Way too complicated. Perhaps you can make a few videos going over the.points you made in todays video.
Please, please, please stop using superbikes for demo purposes....
