Migrating from USG3/Pro to UXG-Lite/Pro - Lets have a look at all the gateways(mostly) and U-LTE-Pro

  • With the release of the UXG-Lite a lot of people are going to want to migrate to leverage the features of the newest gateway, but what about the other gateways and how does the internet failover work for a single WAN device with the LTE, let have a look
    The USG-XG-8 is classed as a Legacy device and i could not justify the cost of one for a EOL device so its not in this video
    As of the 2/12/23 the USG3 and USG-Pro is now calssed as a Vintage device by UI, this means it will still get critical updated but no new features and no new products

    Quick note of caution, if you run your network on a different subnet from 192.168.1.*, be careful that you need to first change the network settings in your new UXG to the correct subnet. Otherwise the above steps do no work.

      Thank You. I came here to ask that. What are the steps to setting the network subnet? Do you do that prior to forgetting the USG?

      This is what I was thinking .. I think an easier way is to add a new site .. with correct subnet and then just move the uxg to the correct site after the setup

    It’s so nice to see all the new ubiquity products coming out and at my home I am still running a first gen ap and first gen cloud key with a edgerouter 4 I think it might be time to pull the wallet strings tighter and lower the children’s pocket money for a while and upgrade my setup after being layed off work

    I have had a usg 3 in my house for the past 6 years , and was thinking of upgrading considering either the uxg lite or the udr. In my situation with a 500mb internet connection the udr would be a better fit, its only slightly more but includes a 4x4 wifi 6 ap and 4 port 2 poe switch. I can still use my exsisisting 8 port swifth and ap ac lite as a sefond ap to extend range .

    Let's hope the USGs don't reach EoL too soon, many people are still using them and they work fine, so it would be a shame to just make them e-waste.

    Hi excellent video - it caught my eye as I've been used a USG 3 for a number of years albeit with copper connectivity to the internet and therefore only receiving 50Mbps. I have recently had fibre installed and with a 900mbps connection coming into the the USG I was only getting circa 110 Mbps internet feed through the device - I've bypassed the USG and used the router from my service provider and I now get 700 - 800 Mbps - I cant wee anything in the USG that would throttle this so much or is it just the capacity of the USG 3 ?

    • @JimtheITguy
      @JimtheITguy  Před 6 měsíci

      The USG3 can do 1gbps with no DPI and threat management but it's not ideal, time to replace with a UXG-LITE

  • @ericilkwatson5557

    There is no option to remove the router before I add a new router. There are only two options for the existing router. Locate and Restart. Maybe because it is a newer OS. What to do about this?

    HI Jim, thanks for the clear explanation; in my case I am replacing the ISP modem/router with an UXG-Pro but still have to keep the modem/router in pppoe passthrough mode (acting now as just a modem). When I plug the (non-adopted) UXG-pro into the ISP modem's WAN port (with just my laptop in the LAN port) I am able to connect the UXG to the Internet but then (after my successful unifi acct login) it starts searching for a cloud key, so I then plug the LAN port into the main switch where the Cloud Key gen2 lives. At that stage the UXG reports that its LAN port is disabled. I've tried that several times with the same result. Could I be some kind of loop protection? Any other idea?

    • @JimtheITguy
      @JimtheITguy  Před 2 měsíci

      Sounds a bit odd, have you tried adopting it first with all the correct settings and then swapping the internet connection over, is your ISP router handing out the same IP range that your LAN is using? Feel free to come over to the discord and ask away

      Did you migrate your USG-3P to your UXG-Lite? I'm about to do the same thing but a bit nervous. As the other fellow said, all the config stuff is held by your Cloud Key Controller. So did you do it yet? If so, was it really just a matter of Forgetting the USG-3P and while it's resetting remove the ethernet cables, connect them to the UXG-Lite, power it up and wait for it to pop up in the Dashboard for adoption and away you go????

    Questions For a LTE backup ,
    #1 do you need to buy a 4G sim from your mobile / Cell provider.
    #2 the 4G mobile plans ive see require a monthly payment 10 - 50 euro, if your main broadband is down for 2 hours a year this dosen't make financial sense
    #3 are there "only pay for what you use" 4g plans out there

    To make the UXG lite a successful product/replacement for the UXG3 they need to introduce a cloudkey lite. The UXG lite doesn't work with the cloudkey gen1, so you need a cloudkey 2 costing around €200,-
    If you are setting up a new network from scratch it's even worse.
    UXG lite ($129) Cloudkey gen2 ($199) Switch lite 8 POE ($109) total $438,- and then start adding the AP’s. You can buy a Dream machine SE giving you twice the CPU, Storage and memory for $499,- so I do not see the business model for this device. And you can’t use it with an old Cloudkey gen 1 so people who are upgrading there old gateway pro 3 probably also need to buy a new cloudkey. Of course you can run unifi from a Raspberry, but that is not what you want for a stable network.
    So I also don't sea a option for a product placed between the UXG lite and pro, because pricewise this will exceed a UDM PRO SE setup.

  • @tld8102
    @tld8102 Před 6 měsíci
