Just the video I needed. Fantastic work.
Low energy consumption, small size, and from a reputable company. I will definitely buy it. Thanks for the video
You made a mistake, there is no such thing as reputable company when you speak about Ubiquiti.
Solid well well-thought-out video Cody.
Thanks for the video!!
I powered up the UXG Lite and connected the lan port to the my network. Plugged the UXG and connected . I saw that the UXG was recognized . Then I removed the USG with the app, plugged the wan connection into the UXG and then adopted the UXG with via the UniFi app. Easy peasy!!
I immediately notice that my web pages opened faster. I ask my wife who did not know what I was doing and she said that she noticed that the web pages loaded much faster.
Way to go Ubiquiti!!!
That’s great to hear! Ya it’s a much faster device than the USG
Extra Thumbs-up for the Blink182 Shirt. Well done Video!
WOW, perfect video, Im giving my UDM to my friend since I have an AC-AP-PRO which is going to a U7 Pro, plus I have all unifi network switch's but im changing my server area one from a 5 port mini to a 16 Port POE. I am also running Unifi on my PI4 in a docker so im good on that front. So the UXG LIte would be a perfect fit for my setup. The UDM will go to a person who will fully use the power it has. Im also buying the a POE+ splitter to power the Lite on one of the 8 POE+ ports.
great video! exactly what I wanted to find out thanks!!
Great video Cody!
Thanks! great video. The performance with IPS max is great. I will buy to replace my old USG as soon as mpore become available. Again, Thanks for a great video.
Thank you for this review from Montreal! You're the first I've seen that's provided data on routing performance with IDS/IPS and Smart Queues. This is all anybody really needs to know. If it works for your application, great, if not, move on. We have deployed literally hundreds of ER-X because of the high performance in a small package (compared to original USG). This comes in at double the price, but at least stays within the UniFi ecosystem. Decisions decisions!
I just found out the ER-X only does 500mbps because of something with the chip or something on the ER-X and ER-X-SFP. I was disappointed, because I had thought they were gigabit. There's not a different EdgeRouter in that price range or size, otherwise I would be using a different device to ensure gigabit availability.
@@JacksonCampbell They can route at gigabit speeds. Google “er-x hardware offload”. You just need to run a couple of commands and it will work at line speed just fine. You can’t do that with software features like smart queues or DPI though.
@@JacksonCampbell ER-X can do simultaneous gigabit, and UXG-Light can't. As usual, Ubiquiti will not have regular releases for entry line products as well, which is comparable with edgerouter support. Honestly, both of them is a waste of money in 2023.
@@yuriykorenyak2351 You're wrong about all of that. ER-X is limited to 500mbps because of a limitation of the link to the switch or something. UXG Lite definitely does gigabit. Not sure what you mean about support for them. They are both getting updates. And they are both good deals for what they are.
@@JacksonCampbell Enable the hardware offload via command line on the ER-X to get gigabit. There are a number of CZcams videos that walks you through the steps.
Thanks for the video Cody. Do you know if I connect a UCK-G2-PLUS and use Unifi Protect?
I was going to pick one up to replace my USG 3P but it went OOS. Picked up a UDM Pro with the Black Friday sale instead.
Thank you fir the review did you test the wireguard speeds too or was the vpn with ipsec or openvpn?
Wonder if they'll release a model just called UXG. We've got the rack mount 10Gb multi WAN UXG-Pro & now the 1Gb single UXG Lite so there's a market that likes the size & form factor of the Lite but want mutli WAN & multi Gig support.
Looking to see if this device does multiple VLANs and or Subinterfaces. Based on the multiple networks you configured I'm going to go with yes. Great video thanks for the review.
Yup it does multiple vlans same as any other Ubiquiti firewall
New Camera / setup? Looks good :)
I am in the U.S. and just received one today. I have the Cloud Key controller and want to change my present Tplink router to this one. Is it a drop-in replacement by disconnecting the Tplink router and connecting the new UAG-Lite and using the Unifi App Bluetooth discovery to adopt it? I have Unifi switches and about 24 clients right now.
Anyone knows if it's possible to disable the NAT between WAN and LAN Port? Since i need to have NAT been done on the device infant of the WAN port and set a fixed route. This is how I do it on my USG. But the USG hat console access, so it was passible to manually change firewall rules. AFAIK you do not have a console access on the UXG...
You should do a weekly network podcast and call it Mactelecast. :)
It would be rambling about nothing 😂 but I’ll give it a thought
Would it be wise to move from my Edgerouter 4 to a UXG, I'd rather have a UDM SE, but I am working out of a 10 inch rack intentionally (Kinda like the SFF build of the networking world). I have a couple of VPNS to a couple of cloud providers, 10 VLANS, tons of firewall rules and a concurrent 1gb internet connection. I did see there was anew beta build for the ER-4 with a complete redesign of the UI making me wonder if the project is still alive again or if they are just worried about a reskin instead of potentially adding more features.
I'm wondering would this be a mix & match perfect to pair with UDR...overall
I know it's All-in-One but...what makes me mad is UDR Display that shows speeds of 0.1 Up & Down Mbps...
which, real internet speed is
53/10 Up & Down Mbps...
+ on top of this...CK Gen 2+ comes later...as a ,,Storage" for
Ubiquity Cameras...as temporarly solution for 3x G5 Bullet & 1x G5 Flex...
just to cover the Main Entrance & Main
Windows on the 1st floor as it's like
2M high & it's low-key easy to
break in my home...
adding Alarm sensors for Vibrations & Any movement ofbthe windows just to stop burglars to get inside my home.

Love the vid' Mate. 😊❤️✌️
Great review
Correction - it is available in Europe. I've ordered mine and its on its way :) #Sweden
Oh cool! It wasn’t the other day when I checked :)
My is up and runing sen 23e #Sweden
They went out of stock fast on the release date in Europe but came back just 2 days later.
It's still not available on the UK store. Says coming soon.
@@JohanBernhardsson - yes, i guess every USG3 owner are wanting to get one asap
Seems like a catch22 on installation if you use a lan based unify server.
On setup it wants me to switch the wan connection to the uxg-lite (as you showed) then for console it says offline as we obviously unplugged the original dhcp server, and it’s not yet assigning IPs for the lan.
Do I need to have it as a different subnet and then somehow allow it to see the original network just to get it adopted?
Seems like if they had it default as a dhcp server this wouldn’t be an issue. Any tips?
Does it allow for "Site Magic" on a self hosted controller? The Website says: License-free SD-WAN* - *When paired with a Cloud Key or Official UniFi Hosting. Thanks for the great video!
Was that VPN test using Wireguard? How does it compare to the VPN throughput you'd get using a UDM-PRO?
I got one as well. And overall it is really great. However, being based on the new Unifi OS this gateway does not support deploying customer configuration to it using the gateway.json file. This is pretty annoying as i need this to use the USG as an internet modem for my fiber connection. ( which requires settings like having IPv4 over VLAN 6 but IPv6 using VLAN 0. ( And TV also has its own VLAN. But the USG itself has no interface for this. So now with the new UXG Mini it is no longer possible to use all the features of my internet connection at the same time.
If I adopt this Gateway Lite with an UDM/UDR can I use multi WAN???
I can get either er-x or usg for 25-35$ here used should I get it instead?
Is it possible to do a 3+ SIte to Site VPN with this Device to one location? Id like to connect 2 more houses to my home Network where a third UXG would sit. Routing in LAN is a pfSense in my Home and at the remote locations it should be the UXG. And it should be Split-VPN so not all traffic runs through my home.
Any comments on the hardware offloading that was present in the usg that's not available in the uxg-lite? How does this affect the performance?
He literally showed a speed test with IPS/IDS turned on which required hardware offloading.
Good review!
Thanks Tony 🙏
What's the process of adopting UXG Lite if the LAN scope is different from the default settings?
I really feel they should have had an integrated controller with this thing. It can't have been that much more expensive and could have benefitted a lot of use cases. As is I would honestly recommend the Unifi Dream Router for most configurations even if you don't need the integrated wifi. In addition to the integrated AP it has more ports, integrated storage, and expandable storage meaning you could really start getting into other unifi applications like unifi protect.
Apparently there will be a non-lite version with wifi6 and controller ..
@@freshmikey82 Well, there is the Express, but even that isn't. Maybe the Ultra is what you're referring to. That would be nice.
gateway lite uxg-lite worth getting if you have the dream router?
Will a UXG-Lite and Cloud Key+ combo work with Site Magic?
Great video! So my BIGGEST concern about swapping out my aging USG-3P for this UXG-Lite is if I would lose any settings or have to do any configuring. After all it's been about 7 years since I put the USG-3P into service and I can't remember what I did. So from your video, it appears that the only thing you need to do is unplug the USG-3P and power up the UXG-Lite and swap the LAN and WAN cables, and make sure you remove the USG-3P from your network before you adopt the UXG-Lite, and that's it???????? You sure there isn't anything else that needs to be done to ensure everything stays the was it was with the USG-3P???? If not, that's relieved a lot a concern I've been having about getting one.
I'm in the same boat, wondering the same thing. I remember having to jump through hoops to get the USG connected to my ISP and ever since I got it working, I haven't touched it, but it's also been 7 years and I have no idea what I really did. I think I have all the settings and options correctly documented but, if it doesn't work, then I'm SOL and kind of on my own!
I'm so glad there is a USG replacement, they may be little tanks that keep on going but it's time for them to grow up
Do you have a typo in your excel in the end with inter vlan speeds for UXG? It says 836/302 but in the speed test it’s 836/902.
Exactly, I noticed that too when he was showing the Excel table. I was like 'woow, that's low' and went back in the video to see the speed test again 😂 probably a typo, @MactelecomNetworks
Good to see the claimed performance improvements to be real! I have my UXG Lite lying here ready to be installed. Still waiting for the Home Assistant Unifi addon to be bumped up to 8.0.7. However I see quite some issues with the lite on the Ubiquiti forum. Loopback/hairpin not working, SSH stability issues, adopt loops of all network elements after adopting the UXG lite, etc. So I'll wait a bit till we have more stable firmware & controller software. Additionally I still can't fully figure out how to exactly adopt the new gateway when the controller is on a different than default subnet without loosing all my settings.
Nice review, come on Ubiquiti, I’d like to see some redundancy/ failover of routers
It’s the new entry level gateway. Redundancy isn’t an entry level feature. You can always go for the Dream Machine Pro.
@@MichaelAlderete or add the U-LTE @ $199. The Omada ER605 can have up to 3 WAN ports at $60
@@MichaelAlderete I have the UXG Pro, and I’m referring to the application not the hardware. If Ubiquiti want to limit it to pro versions, maybe understandable but we need more features.
Any suggestion as to why wifi speed drops dramatically compared to wired? Using UAP AC PRO.
Better off asking reddit CZcams isn't great for tech support
What about ipsec sts? I am not able to get more than 13mbps.
Great video. Appreciate all the speed testing.
I have been looking forward to a successor for the USG for many years and when it finally arrives it is a disappointment by not having wall mounting holes at the back. Il keep my USG.
This is now available in Australia.
Does it use / offer wireguard? Thanks for your effort!
Yup it does
Wish mine had been so easy to swap and replace… just bombed the entire network, even after selecting “replace gateway”.
Would be great to see how this stacks up against a Netgate 1100… The USG was no comparison at all
Is the 1100 not end of life? I could be wrong about that
Will the UXG Lite speed up the VPN connections too?
I'd be extremely surprised if it wasn't way better than the decade old device it replaces 😂
This is a great product for the average consumer who wants to step up from a typical Asus or TP-Link. I couldn't justify recommending the dream machine line to people. This ones more reasonable.
This is more for MSPs and similar use cases, as you would need a console to connect it to.
I would only recommend the dream machine line for ordinary folk, as it’s an simpler all in one solution, and can accommodate other household stuffs like doorbells, cameras, locks, home phones, etc.
@@kensingh9527 Yes, for an all-in-one, it's great. By 'step up' I meant away from the all-in-one units, in which case it'd be the UDM Pro which is just unreasonable. I used to recommend the USG but it's just way too old and outdated now so I'm glad they made this new unit. Essentially a direct replacement of the USG.
Is it good alternative for EdgeRouter X?
Yup it would be :)
This looks about the same size as the Apple TV. So I wonder if the Apple TV mount from total mount would allow you to put this on a wall.
or a 3m vhb velcro
Yes, you can and should put it on the wall, with help of 5" nail and a hammer.
Hello do you recommend qos?, I have multiple UniFi cameras, 2 girls watching Disney. I would like to improve my latency on Xbox. 750mb symmetric internet
With 750MBit/s I don't think you need qos, if all users do a normal usage. If you have a client that does downloads and saturates the uplink, then you might want to look into QoS.
CAN THIS DEVICE/ MODEL QUORANTINE IP ADDRESSES? THANKS
Is there any reason to pick UXG Lite instead of UDM Pro? I’ve had some bad experiences with Ubiquiti devices overheating.
Yes, there is a reason, if you have 500 or less gbit inet without Protect and you don't know much about networking, UXG-Light is for you. Otherwise get ER-x for a half of the price and it will do the same due to similar hardware.
@@yuriykorenyak2351 lol the only reason I’m thinking of ubiq is because I’m tired of pfsense bs, and I definitely need the Protect. I just don’t see any value in the uxg lite compared to the udm pro
How does the performance of the UXG-Lite compare to the ER-4?
Not sure I do not have a ER-4 to test with
already on my desk from 23 Nov in #Poland
Man Canada always gets things last 😂 hope you enjoy it
3d print a wall mount or holder for it if need be
I really need to get my printer setup
It would be cool if it had PoE charging
My only real complaint is the plastic housing, it's not recyclable and just makes the devices feel disposable.
Can I buy the UniFi express and add onto that regular WiFi 6 lite access points ?
Yup you could do that
You can, but the biggest limitation with the Express is that it can only manage itself and four other Unifi devices. So for example, you could add a Flex Mini Switch and three access points, and you've hit the limit.
It also can only run Unifi Network, so you can't use it to manage Unifi cameras or anything else.
What's the best way to replace my USG with my new UXG Lite to save port forwarding?
If you keep the same controller instance and adopt it should keep the port forwarding settings if I recall.
Yes Clous Key Gen 2@@Stev.3n
Thx!@@Stev.3n
Lets hope the Cloud Gateway Ultra comes soon......
🤞
I also wait for something like that. 1 x 1Gb LAN it's not enough for me.
Better for routing, this or the udr?
This 100% you can only get max 700mbps with the UDR
@@MactelecomNetworks so what if you already have a udr (like me)? You think you could set this up as your router and just use the udr as an ap/controller? I already have a uxg pro and ap throughout the house. 1/1 internet connection.
Can it do 1 gig symmetrical? Or is it only 1 gig one way?
It can
That usb-c power source will be the achilles heel you cannot easily replace it with aftermarket when it fails!
What? You can use the UXG-L with any USB-C power supply you want
Whats the CZcams VLan for?
They aren’t for anything I just named it that for this video
Can I create openvpn server on uxg-lite?
The self hosted controller statement baffles a lot of noobs I think, myself included.
Does the controller need to be running 24/7 for the equipment to work? Or can I just run the controller on my laptop to get the equipment up and running and for when I need to make modifications and then shut it down? And all my equipment will still work? What is the point or need of running the controller 24/7?
No it doesn't need to run 24/7. It's just for monitoring, really. I've had one setup on my laptop. Worked fine. Nowadays I bought a mini pc from Amazon and put the controller on that and let it run 24/7. It's just good to have something you can remotely access if you are away and check on things.
@@ananamusly thank you.
The controller only needs to be running when you want to adjust settings, use the wifi captive portal, or if you want to gather traffic statistics. Ran it for four years on my laptop before finally moving it to a Raspberry Pi 3 a year ago.
You'll need it if you want your access points to update automatically.
What about WireGuard client and all vpn options?
They are all there
Does it have the new VPN wireguard OpenVPN?
It does
Not sure why everyone mentions it's the same and not mention this change? The usg and usg4pro don't have those options
@@DeNNiiiable 🤷♂️ I never use the USG or USG pro anymore for the last few years so didn’t know it wasn’t capable of that
I think the biggest complaint for me is the gigabit ports. I think the ports should’ve been 2.5, at least. We need to start ditching gigabit because multi-gigabit is the future. No affordable products(under $200?) have 2.5 for WAN and LAN yet. I recently got fiber for the first time and my ISP has a router with a 2.5 WAN port, but the LAN port is 1gb so I think that’s a waste too. The industry is moving so slow for household multi-gigabit.
That’s why I returned mine. All should be minimum 2.5 gb
I'm on the fence. I've had multi gig available where I am for the last year or two. Still haven't upgraded due to the additional monthly cost, as well as the need to upgrade everything else in my house.
Having said that, the Brume 2, which has a 30% faster processor, is like $70. It also has a 2.5 gb WAN port.
For how cheap RAM is these days, I thank Ubiquiti could have added more ram.
What 2.5GBit are you speaking about? UXG-Light even can't do simultaneous gigabit. It is more or less ER-x competitor and not a light version of UXG-pro
@@yuriykorenyak2351 eero pro 6E has a 2.5 WAN port. I don’t have any Ubiquiti products.
@@yuriykorenyak2351 The video showed a test of it doing gigabit. What is that test not showing that you think this should be doing?
The model name is frustrating. I thought the x was supposed to denote 10g support; guess I was wrong.
The naming convention is odd. For 10Gb you would use the uxg pro
@@MactelecomNetworks yeah, that's what I'm running now. Just trying to understand what the model numbers are supposed to mean.
X in this context means Next-gen. Normally when UI uses XG to indicate 10G support it's after the Product family e.g US-XG-6POE, USW-Flex-XG.
We used to see QoS capablities on Ubiquti routers like EdgeRouterX around 100mbps, EdgerRouter4 around 200mpbps, What can we expect on pure QoS on the UXG Lite? more than 200mpbs?
Well there really isn’t QoS on these devices it’s more of wifi limiting . Hope to see traditional QOS implement in an update
@@MactelecomNetworks Thanks for the reply Cody. The wifi limiting... not sure it would work out for me, hope they expand it as to limit on wired aswell.
Nice - a bit "sad" that no "small" router has PoE -- this would be nice.
The value of this new router isn't as good as a Dream Router with its built-in controller, AP, and switch. If you are running your own Unifi server in the cloud for a lot of devices, it could be useful, but it seems like they could cut $30 off, and it makes more sense.
Hi, Ubiquiti UXG-LITE 2-Port Gigabit Gateway Node quarantine Ip addresses?
Thanks
Mine arrived today to replace my USG. Migration went well.
That’s great to hear, it’s an awesome unit
Great news! What steps did you take to do the migration?@@MactelecomNetworks
Did you have to change anything still on the UXG side after the migration process , e.g. WAN-IP (for a transfer network) or adding any Fiewall Rules etc.?
Was it really just removing USG and adapting the new device (UXG Lite) to run exactly same configuration?
@@Excited-IT-Architect I do not run a default 192.168.1.0/24 so I had to run an ethernet cable from my computer to the LAN port on the router and go in via http to the default address and make some changes to the LAN side... then removed the cables from the USG and put them in the UXG-Lite, removed the USG from the network and adopted the new device. Everything rolled in nicely. I do suggest you make config backups beforehand just in case.
@@Excited-IT-Architect Not a thing... CloudKey had all the network settings. Piece of cake.
Now bring out UXG Lite+ with 2.5Gb LAN and WAN ports.
We asked Ubiquiti for such a product: 2.5Gb port, sfp, desktop compact version and it is what we got for a price what we asked.
ME FIRST !
Ubiquiti bought out Apple's stock of old Airport Express'
Can it be used as a 3rd WAN with a UDM Pro?
Sold out...same story different Unifi product...
Seemed a very compeling device until I realized that it does not host unifi software…
The coming UniFi Express is the same size but also runs a controller on it, has a built-in WAP & screen.
Running the controller is only slightly more difficult than sleeping. I don't see the problem.
Looks like a White AppleTV.
It does
gigabit? I thought they went away from that to 10 mbit
Very few places outside of major cities have even 1 gigabit ISP rates. It's pretty sad in north america.
No PoE, only 1 Gbps. In addition the current software is broken beyond believe. Create a VLAN, create a SSID. It should be a guest / isolated network. But turning this option on, that worked in the old USG well, will make your clients on that SSID not get any DHCP addresses and not get internet. Only workaround currently is to make the network not a 'guest' network. Which means it will be able to talk to all other devices. The hole guest / corporate network shizzle makes the actual configuration of that brick even hard for network experts because ubnt tries to hide complexity behind proprietary gimmicks that make the actual effective configuration as un-transparent as it gets. And then they don't even work the way they should on release day because the customer is their alpha tester... Ubnt is only successful because the other network vendors for their customer scope are even worse (hard to believe...)
My USG-Lite sucked.
a
Looks like a Apple TV 😂
More like a Apple Airport Express 2nd Gen.
Should have been 2.5 gig ports. Waste of a product in my opinion. Even at $129.00
Especially when you can buy a way more capable hardware for a price, even from Ubiquiti by itself.
Embrace the baldness brother. Give up the cap and shave your head 👌🏻
Fun fact I’m not bald. However I do have alopecia which sometimes causes bald spots.
I like the hat but appreciate the concern
way worse......so support for several wans what auto marks it as a garbage
No sfp port in 2023 - such a shame. No bidirectional gigabit - not possible simultaneous upload/download gigabit throughput. Virtually any consumer router with ddwrt will do a better job than this small piece of obsolete (and overpriced at the same time) hardware. My statement is valid if you have a home lab. For corporate environment, you need to really save on your IT if you decide to buy this small piece of junk. We voted for modern router in compact form factor and got as a result 10 years old piece of hardware even not capable of a full gigabit.
On my side, I want to get rid of my old ER-4 which becomes a bottleneck and trouble issuer in my home lab (no updates, no fixes for issues). But, as I found, UXG-Light is actually a competition for ER-x - and it is not really an improvement for me. And here I am speaking about home lab. Corporate - big NO! You can get a way better piece of hardware with more capable software for 129$ USD.
all this configuration and bs, and gets the same speeds I do with an eero.
