  • In this video Leah explores the connection between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction in veterans. She elucidates the clinical guidelines for diagnosing OSA through polysomnography, emphasizing its potential exacerbation by TMJ dysfunction. TMJ dysfunction, characterized by issues in the jaw's hinge joint, can be service-connected and may influence or worsen OSA. Leah highlights the multifactorial nature of OSA, considering various risk factors like obesity, family history, and gender, and discusses the importance of individual case evaluation. She references several articles underscoring the association between TMJ dysfunction and OSA, including research indicating a significant correlation between the two conditions.

Great video. I was just denied OSA secondary to TMJ. Beginning my appeal.

in your opinion, the rating criteria says breathing assistant devices such as a Cpap, does the use of the words "such as" mean that it is one example of but not limited to just that example? because i have heard of people that get prescribed mouthguards for OSA and positioning pillows that all assist in keeping airways open.

Yes I believe that using an equivalent device is acceptable. You will want to double check with a legal professional on this

@@prestigeveteranmedical i just wanted to let you know in case you touch the OSA issue in your future videos, the Raters manual has a list of acceptable devices considered by the VA for the 50% rating.

I had a nexus done by prestige. Trying to connect OSA to allergic rhinitis and obesity due to my mental health. Still had to attend a C&P exam even with DBQ. Examiner opine, less likely than not. And there was no connection. 😞 please help
Just got service connected to TMJ/Bruxsim.

I got my sleep apnea service connected and I just submitted my TMJ claim the other day, can this logic be applied in reverse?
