    3. Why I started No Poo
    4. Would I recommend No Poo for you
    5. Results of 1 year of No Poo
    I took a 6 months break during winter to use Weleda shampoo, washing my hair 1 day a week, as snowboarding and using kerosene heaters in Japan, my scalp was always covered and my hair smelt like kerosene, the smells stick onto your hair even with a water wash.
    However, now that it's Spring, I'm not using shampoo again as an experiment. Seems to be a lot easier now my hair is more used to not using shampoo so often.

    Also, I wanted to add: with a global shift towards more eco friendly living, videos like this couldn’t be more important right now! The decreased water and plastic bottle consumption is a huge plus of no poo. I’ve been washing my hair once per month for a year and it’s saved me so much money and hassle!

      Hi Sophie,
      In Japan plastic is said to be “recycled” but it’s just burned, it’s actually almost impossible to not buy product after product covered in plastic 😔 you’re right though, no poo goes against the type of thinking of consumption for the sake of it and need, when it’s actually unnecessary. I hadn’t thought of it from a eco perspective 😄 more of a rebellion again shampoo adverts and brainwashing 😁

      @@myrthasmascary4086I’d be careful using baking soda. It’s really strong, it cleans grime in the kitchen for example. I have friends who use a clay type wash. Personally I used water while doing no poo. But my dandruff got too flakey and itchy. So I needed dandruff shampoo to help my scalp.

    Here's what I been doing with my hair after I've stopped using shampoo.
    There's this medieval hair combing method in which you simply brush your hair everyday for a long time (by long time I mean at least 30 minutes 😅.🌿 If you have short hair then brushing less than 30 minutes might work just fine for you🌿) . First I divide my hair in two sections. Then starting with one section, brush the hair with a very wide teeth comb. After detangling I take a few drops of oil(coconut oil because that's what I have. You can use any oil you want) and apply that on the ends of my hair (because that part tends to get dry. 🌿 You can use more or less than few drops if that's necessary for your hair 🌿). Next step is to start combing the hair with a comb which has thin gap between each teeth ( is used for getting rid of lice). I just brush my hair from root to tip. Each section of hair for at least 15 minutes(you might have to clean your brush one or two times in between if it gets too dirty). And after I am done with both section of my hair the shine is unbelievable 😄(🌿 if you are someone who doesn't care about having shiny hair then brushing your hair every two days should be alright 🌿). There's no grease of flakes on the hair. It feels and looks like freshly washed hair. I don't use any other products on my hair. Simply use water for washing the hair. But I tend to make a bun every other day while showering because the tips of my hair tends to get dry if I wash them every day. But I make sure to get the roots of my hair wet and just massage them somehow with my fingers under running water 😅. Rest of the days I just wet my hair completely while massaging the roots a little.
    That's what I've been doing for the past two months. And everytime I tell someone that I haven't been using any shampoo,soap or conditioner on my hair the surprised look on their face is real😁. By the way, I live in a tropical climate and I have thigh length hair which is bleached from the mid length to tip. Never had to deal with the greasy feeling neither do I have split ends problem with my bleached hair because of this medieval combing method😊. Never had itching problem. My scalp smells just like my skin ☺️. So give it a try. You can just search medieval hair combing method on CZcams.

      And what if I have curly hair but want to keep them curly ? Because I brush my hair often, not as often as you do, and my hair still is curly but I really don't have as much curls as when I've just wet my hair. Which saddens me. What bother me is if I keep my hair curly, I don't brush them but then my oils stay near my scalp and my hair gets quite dry...

      @@baobabbaobab6487 I totally missed your comment. I have waxy hair, but I know that curly hair requires a lot more care, from friends who have curly hair. Like using a tshirt to dry your hair and using different types of oils. I rarely brush my hair but mine isn't curly so it's different for you. Generally isn't curly hair more dry? Perhaps using oils for the ends might help you.

      @@baobabbaobab6487 I am not sure if this will work but you can try oiling the ends of your hair(apply enough oil to moisturize well) after you are done combing the hair clean. That way your roots will be clean without getting oily. And after you are done combing and oiling,try braiding your hair and go to sleep 😄. Because even though I have neither wavy nor straight hair type, my hair still gets really wavy if I braid my hair after oiling properly ( although it doesn't last long if I comb them again 😅). If you have a lot of hair ,then maybe more than one braid will do the job☺️. Which means night time is the best for following this routine.
      After following the combing method this long, I have found some natural ways of cleaning the hair without combing all the time. Like lime juice and water works really well in cleaning the scalp. And for fluffy,shiny soft hair a hair pack of egg,Greek yogurt and lime juice works best. These days I don't really comb to clean that often like in the beginning. And when I feel lazy, I just use lime juice or the hair pack to clean my hair😁.

    I have been doing no poo for 9 years + now! Granted I have short hair, but for the first 5 years it was long. It's certainly easier and less oily with short hair. Ahhhh it just makes me so happy to know that we are living out of the Matrix lol! The technique I use, which not alot of ppl talk about, is cold water (which I hear helps with dandruff), at least every 2-3 days. And then when drying your hair you can actually wick the oil out of your hair with your towel by grabbing a large strand/chunk of it at the scalp with the towel and pulling the towel out to the end of the strand, which wicks the oil out and onto the towel. And I repeat this for all my hair. For me now it just takes seconds but it shouldn't take more than a minute or two. Very effective for controlling the oil. Every head is different. Mine took about 3 weeks to get to equilibrium but some can take longer. Don't give up!

      Hi thanks so much for your comment. I do wonder how it's different for shorter hair but I definitely think that no poo is better for hair health. It's a little weird but it's more that we've been conditioned (no pun intended) to must wash our hair with shampoo and conditioner. It's amazed me we need neither! Just a little more care with brushing and withstanding the greasiness/smell of hair sometimes. I'm going to try to go full no poo until next Spring. I'll make an update. Definitely finding the colder drier weather in the mountains in Myoko, Japan, making my scalp very very dry but water washing more often seems to work. I agree, if you do No Poo don't give up!!!

It is now growing and the longest length is on my shoulders, still doing great and I'm hoping as it keeps growing I will not have to wash it. I do have my natural soap bar which I will use the TINIEST amount if it gets physically dirty or sweaty but other than that I just use water and then every few days I use my scrub brush for my scalp. Quick and dirty overview of the history hair cleansing habits in western Europe to the best of my knowledge:
    - combs are some of the oldest archeological objects we tend to find but could have been used in the textile industry we just have no way of knowing (btw "caveman" is a misnomer, in Europe we never lived in caves we might have used them for temporary shelter or religious or artistic reasons but "cavemen" were nomades and settled down in what resembles modern tents or tipis)
    - combing is basically the way we kept hair clean throughout European history, in antiquity the celts allegedly used lime to wash hair (might have been chalk) and the romans washed it in mid August but i have yet found no description of how
    -in the middle ages, vikings would wash hair on Saturdays the rest of Europe could have done it as often as weekly as little as monthly, like the rest of hygiene it was done with (vine) ashes, daialy hair combing and braiding and hair covering. Marseille soap is invented (then only used as laundry detergent) and first mention of scented hair powder i know of. Various concoctions and oils can be used
    - modern era: the popularisation of closed chemney means less soot means less hair covering (maybe) variations on the humor theory, densly populated cities and the plagues means that city water is not the safest and is less popular, daily combing is still done, hair powdering (covering hair in animal fat and then in a layer of powder that is combed thoroughly daily) starts being a thing in the late 17th century but remains a really french thing to do until the late 18th century, hair is still covered by day specially outside.
    -19th century: visible hair powdering become tacky by the beginning of the century, 1830 we see a trend of young teenage girls washing their hair is frowned upon by their teachers (tuberculosis bring a fear of being cold and damp), boar bristle brushes become common throughout Europe, the term shampoo (describing a spa like treatment inspired by india practices involving hair oiling and perfuming) gets coined in English. Detergent options include castille soap, jelly soaps , eggs,tea, coffee, all of those can be mixed with borax, alcohols or other astringent products.
    Early 20th century, the fashion of cutting hair shorter and setting it in curls using water will bring with it the necessity to have it washed weekly to maintain the style and when long hair is back in fashion in the late 60- early 70s it's worn loose and uncovered and is then more prone to dirtiness (and a lot of cleaning practices are either obsolete or forgotten)

    You look a lot like you could be from an anime. You are sooo pretty. ❤
    I quit shampooing when I buzzed my hair at the end of December 2021. My hair (which there wasn't a lot) got used to it very quickly. I'm still washing my hair with water only, but every now and then I'll use some kind of a hair rinse (ACV, citric acid or something else) if it feels like my hair needs it. My hair feels very nice, it doesn't smell or get greasy very quickly (it mostly gets only sweaty which kind of makes your hair look like it's super greasy). Also I used to have a problem with dandruff, but now it's ALL gone. I suppose that the daily shampooing really made my hair get greasy super fast but then again made my scalp get super dry which caused the flaking of the scalp.. Thanks shampoo industry for making me suffer with dandruff for over a decade...

      Hi, thanks so much for your comment, definitely have never been told I look like a anime character before. That's amazing that your dandruff went away. The main thing I got from doing No Poo, is that you don't have to wash your hair everyday, I never did because I could never be bothered to. I actually stopped No poo, as my dandruff and dry scalp didn't improve. So I use a dandruff shampoo, but perhaps a ACV rinse would also work if it did for you. Shaving your hair, also probably helped to just renew your hair too :)

      You’re welcome. It was a trend that was boosted by the pandemic and lockdowns. And yes I’ve washed my hair twice this year, at a fancy onsen (Public hot spring bath) that had divine smelling shampoo, so I couldn’t resist. Amazing how greasy my hair got afterwards 😄
      I still have dandruff/dry scalp, and my scalp gets itchy. So I need to look into shampoos to target the dandruff, that helps to sooth the skin that is irritated. I’ll be posing a 2 year no poo update this May 😄

      It's not the most pleasant experience. I'm no longer doing no poo. Also harder now that lockdowns and meeting people is more normal now. But I feel like my frazzled bleached scalp and hair needed to be detoxed. You can also just water wash, which surprisingly works well. However the smell of hair is something very different to being used to using shampoos. Personally my dandruff didn't get better and as it's a growth of skin issue, I found using correct shampoos which treats it works for me. But I try to minimize washing to 2 times a week, when my scalp is itchy and flaky. I also use conditioner now, as those shampoos dry your hair a little and makes my wavy hair frizzy. Hope that helps.

    Something I've been wondering is what do you do when you're about a month in and, even though your scalp has finally balanced the oils, what do you do about the overproduction oil still in your hair from the beginning? Should I just wash it with soap once to get the majority of it out? Or do I try to brush it out as much as I can? I've done 3 water washes in the shower to try to get as much oil out as I could but it just hasn't done anything.
    Thank you for the video, btw! It was nice to get a different perspective on the baking soda. That didn't make sense to me either if the whole point was to let your hair do it's natural thing. Besides, baking soda is very basic, seems too harsh to me to be using every week.

      Hi! I reckon you can also wean yourself off of shampoo slowly, like I mentioned late in winter from November - March I used Weleda shampoo once a week. It was the most organic shampoo I could find in Japan, also luxurious price but I still have it now because I barely use shampoo. I am not a scientist by the way. But I had extremely, like looked like oil was poured on my hair, from about week 3 - week 4. I'd avoid washing it more often, it's your hair detoxing from having shampoo for however many years. You can try screetching like massaging your scalp and using your fingers to comb through the oil to the ends of your hair, brushing your hair I use one of those bristle brushes. The oil will be gone after week 4 - 5. Everyone is different though and honestly not washing your hair with shampoo is really hard. As we're so conditioned to have to have pretty smelling, non oily hair. But oil is natural at the end of the day. I saw a difference in oil from about week 6. I think I rinse my hair with water 2 - 3 times a week. Once it's dry, I brush it and it looks fine. If I don't brush it, it can look a little greasy.

    • @Ninjacatt22
      @Ninjacatt22 Před 2 lety +1

      @Dawson Davis I've been using a boar bristle brush for distributing the oils. It seems to help significantly--however, as soon as I brush near the scalp area, it tends to make it clump almost instantaneously, making it look greasy. So now I only brush the top when I know I'll be taking a shower that day. Seems to work like a charm now!
      I am still experimenting with the amount of days I can go without washing, and what techniques and methods work best to stretch that out. In regards to my initial comment, I did end up using regular shampoo once just to get the insane amount of build-up off. In the long run, I think this has helped immensely. I now have a chance to keep up with water washing only (although this is kind of a lie. I use diluted lemon juice to combat hard water). It's interesting though... you are right about the "weightier" feel to it. It is heavy, but smooth. I honestly kind of love it--I'm not sure I'll ever go back to shampoo/conditioner again.

      Hi Pierre, glad that this video helped you. I am now using shampoo once a week, I used a drugstore Japanese dandruff shampoo. I've been doing back to back winters in Japan, then in New Zealand, so the environment was very dry, plus wearing a beanie almost all the time. In my case it might be more dry scalp than dandruff, but I just needed something to soothe my scalp and perhaps the yeastlike fungus to be treated. Water washing helped while I was doing no poo, my hair was really greasy after the 3 rd, 4th week. But then it was dry again. The best thing to do is see a certified dertamatologist if your scalp is still very flakey, mine was mild, so I just went for shampooing at least once a week and water washing. I also go to sauna very often, so the sweat etc means I should water wash more often but don't always have the time to. It's definitely an experiment and it is different for each person.

    Hi! I’ve been no poo for 2 weeks now (and it’s been brutal but a fun experiment!) how long were you going between washes before you started using weleda and what month into your no poo self challenge were you when you added weleda into your routine? I’ve been feeling a little discouraged by people with fine, thin hair deciding that water only just wasn’t possible and giving up. But you seem to have had a relatively successful run!

    • @NanoYoga
      @NanoYoga  Před 3 lety +2

      Hi Amy! Week 2 was the worst for me too, luckily it was A State of Emegency in Japan, luckily there wasn't much socialising to be done but a beanie or a cap works a treat. For me it definitely got better by week 3 - 4. Then by Week 5, it was as if my scalp had purged all the shampoo toxins and regulated as it should. I kept going with No Poo til about 6 months, mostly because I was a little insecure when I went to a friend's wedding in Tokyo, and in winter in Japan, we use kerosene heaters which smell bad and it sticks onto your hair! But only washed my hair once a week. My hair now is so much shinier, at the ends, like when you condition your hair on the first day, so soft, less frizzy, less damaged, a lot more volume on the roots too. I wrote a blog, where there's a link to another detailed No Poo blog, where she talks about scritching and preening, and brushing your hair with a bristle brush. Which helped in the week 2 - 3 greasy stage, give that a try and let me know if you keep going with No Poo!!

    • @amy9152
      @amy9152 Před 3 lety

      @@NanoYoga thank you! That’s encouraging to hear that you were able to make it to once a week. I’ll definitely check out the blog posts and try to refine my method as best as I can. I’ve heard the first month is rough so I can’t wait til I get to the period where my hair starts to better regulate the oil production on my scalp. I have 3.5 months for this experiment so I’m hoping it’s enough time to wean my hair off of all products. Wish me luck!!

      That seems totally normal to me, but abnormal to someone today. Shampoo and conditioner companies make a lot of money. By telling us our hair looks bad, smells if we don’t wash it everyday. It’s the case in Japan 😂 I no longer do no poo, due to my dandruff getting worse. So once a week maximum and water washing when I go to the onsen (hot spring baths) here in Japan or sauna at the onsen, my scalp gets way too sweaty.

    I'm thinking of going this as my scalp is so dry & itchy, I have tried all the medicated & herbal things, to no avail. My hair itself is pretty normal, it doesn't get greasy but I wouldn't call it dry either, but I much prefer how it looks wet, its too fluffy & big left natural, so a big of grease would help it. My fear is having a stinky head, or a more itchy unbearable head as I go through weeks of adjustment. Do you find water alone removes that hair/head smell?

    • @NanoYoga
      @NanoYoga  Před 6 měsíci

      If your scalp is itchy I'd get a dandruff type shampoo, that's what I had to do when my scalp was dry and itchy eventually, not shampooing, made my scalp more dry. It isn't so bad now that I used shampoo that helps dandruff/dry scalp, as it's more targeting what's making your scalp dry .

    Can someone please give me some advice. I've been 3 months or so without shampooing my hair. I first started out by washing with baking soda and vinegar but I belive I was washing too often. I was loosing a lot of loose hairs in the shower. So I stopped washing all together. At first it was super oily but now its back to normal. Every week I will either do a water wash or if I'm feeling really ick I will do baking soda and vinegar... BUT HERES THE PROBLEM. My scalp gets so itchy about the 2 week. I'm scratching and it bleeds sometimes... and I've gotten really bad dandruff. I can take a small comb and flake the dandruff off. I use rosemary oil and that helps the dandruff for a few days. I've never had dandruff. Why is this happening. I've only heard the opposite from the no poo method.

I'm also living in winter right now in Japan in a very dry environment. I have lost my dandruff shampoo, possibly at the public onsen (hot spring bath), I can see that my scalp is itchy from using a normal shampoo.
