    I wash my hair with flour by dissolving about 2 tbls in warm water and massage it into my scalp and then finish it off with a vinegar wash. The flour absorbs oil, so it really helps with the smell.

    Hey I have really bad dandruff too and Baking soda & Vinegar did not do it for me either. I went to mexico and used this local organic Aloe Vera Shampoo that cut my dandruff by 50 percent. I told my aunt from the USA and told her I was gonna buy one before I left. She told me she had the same problem...What she did was buy any Organic Shampoo from the store. The healthiest you can find (your preference) And then get a leaf of aloe vera, scoop out the gel and blend it in a blender and then mix in half of the shampoo & the aloe vera. I did this and am now dandruff free and itch free!

    I've been doing no poo for 10 weeks now.
    I've never honestly been happier with my hair.
    I had the 'crunchy' phase, and used argan oil and then used corn starch throughout that period.
    As for the dandruff period, I had to grin and bear it. I used a knit comb to comb out as much as I could as it seemed to REALLY stick to my hair.
    I have dyed my hair for years (dyed back to natural 1 week before no poo) and I was told by my hairdresser I would have to cut it all off to save my length. Now she's in absolute shock at the fact my hair is very close to feeling natural.
    I don't use any vinegar or baking sodas either! Rinse with warm water. Finish with cold, and condition my ends when I feel they need it!

    Maybe your dandruff is caused by something going on inside your body instead of what you are doing on the outside. I had scalp problems for years and it turns out it was a wheat/gluten allergy. After two months of cutting it out of my diet my scalp was clear. Just a thought!

    • @sarahhtran
      @sarahhtran  Před 9 lety +5

      How did you find out it was because of wheat? did you go to a dermatologist? Thanks :)

    • @aliciakristina3297
      @aliciakristina3297 Před 9 lety +14

      ***** I originally went to a dermatologist and was told that it was genetic and I would have it for the rest of my life, but that it could be controlled with really expensive medicated shampoo. I wasn't really willing to accept that answer so I ended up doing my own research online and in nutrition books. There's a really great book called Prescription for Nutritional Healing which first mentioned that it could be wheat or dairy.

      Agreed. I'm hypersensitive/allergic to a lot of chemical additives and when I cut out the food additives in particular, my skin glows/is acne-free and my dandruff is eliminated (and a whole range of other alleviated symptoms). Within days of consuming food additives like preservatives, I start breaking out, dandruff appears and hair and skin dry out. I used to think it was a gluten sensitivity but it turns out a lot of things that has gluten in it like bread, also contains preservatives. I reacted just as poorly to bread as I did to hot chips from a takeaway shop. The common denominator between all the foods I react to is the additives.

    Try using soap nut. It is the same pH as hair and works exactly as shampoo. It leaves your hair soft and shiny. There are lots of videos on CZcams about it. Check it out! Maybe it'll work for you.

  • @luzvigerminal558
    @luzvigerminal558 Před 9 lety +7

    Yes you need vinegar rinse and much better if you use a raw apple cider vinegar. Cider vinegar makes your hair soft and shiny.

  • @SassyMakeup12

    Best part of all is that it still feels like shampoo! And the Aloe vera is also supposed to be good for hair growth. And just in case I did not explain correctly, I mean Cut HALF of the leaf, and scoop out the gel from half the leaf, and then mix if in with half of the shampoo (or a little under half).

    Hi, I just discovered your channel and your no-poo journey and I just wanted to leave a few thoughts:
    1. Even though baking soda has a fairly basic (alkaline) pH, the idea is that you return the pH back to 4 with the rinse. Even if there was still baking soda left in your hair after shampooing, your acid wash (the vinegar) will first neutralize excess baking soda (pH 7), and then the rest of the acid will leave the scalp at pH 4. Or at least that's the theory.
    2. Baking soda is harsh on it's own. However, the healing properties of apple cider vinegar are supposed to counteract/make up for that.
    3. I highly suggest you look into natural soap. I just completed a year of organic chemistry and did a project on natural soap. Technically speaking, store bought soaps are not actually, by definition, soap. They are actually detergents (water-soluble substance) and thus are called "beauty bars" or "body bars". Real soap is a "salt" made by reacting oils/fats + strong base (pH 13-14, usually sodium hydroxide, aka lye). Tbh, soap is an entirely new beast on it's own. Long story short: unlike beauty bars (detergent), REAL soap is very very gentle, super moisterizing, and is far greater than baking soda or raw honey. The reason being is that it is often a combination of oils and fats, which are moisterizing on their own, and produce a lather that does not strip your hair (ie baking soda) and is not sticky. You can make your own VERY easily (lemme know if you'd like more info) or you can buy them. They are a bit more expensive but cheap if you make it on your own. It's about maybe $4/5 for a cheap "shampoo bar" which is what they're called (the only diff between real soap and a shampoo bar is that shampoo bars have more lather, same concept tho). I believe the "Dr. Bronner's" brand is good and i've seen it at cvs. Whole foods definitely has natural soaps. If you wanna go luxury, Lush has them as well but I'm sure they're going to be about $8-10 per bar. I have links/blogs if you'd like more info.
    P.S. I made my own soap for my project and have been "no poo" and no store-bought soap for about 3 months now. No dandruff, silky smooth hair, hair is happy (evident from minimal sebum production). Organic chemistry student.

      @sarahhtran  Před 10 lety +4

      This is amazing! Thank you for sharing your knowledge! :) I will just have to give it a try sometime. Because it is a real soap is there any transition phase to this method at all?
      After reading this I actually scrapped the apple cider vinegar out of my routine to just try the honey on it's own and my scalp has seen noticeable changes!

    • @starflare93
      @starflare93 Před 10 lety +1

      There is a transition phase. However, since you've been no-poo for over 20weeks now, you should be good to go (no weird transition). Making soap is fun but the startup costs (buying a digital scale, crockpot, materials) can be annoying as well as finding the time. If you are interested in diy soap, check out this blog: www.humblebeeandme.com/my-all-in-one-soap-recipe/ . She is awesome and you can gather a lot of information (note: she uses the "cold process method", which means soap takes anywhere from 3-6 weeks to set. I would recommend googling "hot process method" since it's significantly faster. Only difference between the two methods is time and final product appearance). I can't remember if I mentioned this earlier but "Chagrin Valley" is a legit company/website for legit soap. It's about $8 for a standard bar size but I believe they also sell smaller sizes. They use cold process method and use the good stuff. As a tip, if you decide to buy a shampoo bar but aren't sure if it's "real" soap, just ask if it's made cold process/hot process and if they use lye (which they should). And after using the bar in the shower, it's a good idea to let it dry on a rack so that the bar doesn't degrade in a puddle of shower water.
      Also, I will need to try this honey method you are doing... sounds really interesting. For a period of time I was using only natural soap because acv rinse seemed to make my hair greasy. However, more research found that simply diluting the mixture worked awesome (1cup water, 1tbsp vinegar, 2-3drops of essential oil if you wanna be fancy) and with a lot less grease. My hair type is asian, maybe a medium thickness, and long and I can go about 4-5 days before I get tired of smelling my hair.
      As a side note, I'm curious as to how you make your hair smell good between washes. I mean, we're past the point of the gross greasy hair. Now, even though my hair doesn't look like it needs a wash, it sure smells like it does. I've been using baby powder as my dry shampoo... but I just recently discovered Batiste Dry Shampoo at Ulta (also sold at Urban Outfitters) and man, it smells SO GOOD. I read the ingredients and it's just rice flour, some alcohol as the solvent, and some awesome-smelling perfume. At about 9 bucks for a small can though? I'm not sure. I'm a poor college student lol. I mean, the main ingredient that we are trying to avoid from department stores are silicone materials (it will be listed in the ingredients as "Dimethicone
      Cetyl Dimethicone
      Cetearyl Methicone
      Dimethiconol
      Stearyl Dimethicone") which as I believe you already know causes buildup in your roots, weighs down your hair, and turns you into a grease-ball.

    A great way to help get rid of dandruff and nourish your hair is massaging 1-2tsp's of jojoba (very close to our body's own natural oil) or coconut oil in conjunction with 2 drops of tea tree oil onto the scalp. Try this method 1-2 times a week and you should notice an improvement. You may also want to try rinsing your hair at a cooler temperature. Hot water strips your hair of it's natural oils and can lead to a dry scalp.

      I can personally vouch for the oil method. I had horrible dandruff for years, so I cut back on shampoo to once every 2 weeks and started massaging oil into my scalp twice a week. The results were great, I think over use of harsh shampoos were drying out my scalp. Now i'm looking to cut out shampoo all together, therefor the watching of this video.

    • @TheMissiongurl

      Samantha Paige Do you just leave the oil in, or do you rinse it out after you massage it?

    • @SammieePaige
      @SammieePaige Před 9 lety

      TheMissiongurl I put it in right before I go to bed, leave it in while I sleep then shower it off in the morning. But I've read blogs and watched youtube videos of people leaving their various oils in for only an hour before washing them off and still getting great results. I will say that when you sleep with it in it tends to spread to the rest of your hair. So if you’re pedantic about keeping the oil off your hair and to your scalp only, then sleeping with it in is not the best idea. Also some oils are harder to wash out then others. Personally I like sleeping with it in, but it all depends on your personal comfort and preferences.

      Seananiganz great idea... but how do you remove all that oil without shampoo? I do exactly what you described then wash with a natural, gentle plant based shampoo (I love Aubrey Organics) It's not perfect, the ends of my hair feel like straw two days after washing and it can tangle easily at that time... but I just have to comb down the natural oils and detangle and then it's fine, I go as long as I can without shampooing. I have curly hair which stays pretty is dry.

    hey sarah, I have dandruff as well and I was told about shampoo bars from a friend. you can get them at your local mother earth store. its nothing but natural oils combined together and its like a regular soap bar. it also conditions your hair so you don't need any extra conditioning treatments. also it doesn't strip the natural oils that your hair needs. Also what I have been doing is the inversion method and massaging either coconut oil or vitamin e oil into my hair for 4 to 5 minutes a night for only up to a week. my scalp has never felt so moisturized and the itchiness has gone away also my hair has been growing like crazy

    Look forward to reading all the comments and see if you updated on how this method is going - it is very interesting; I have been doing the no poo for, don't really know, didn't pay attention when I started, but I think a month or two and it has worked out fine for me! I have also made my own version of a sea spray with what I had at home for a recipe I found, which was basically, Himalayan salt (I used my sol that I have made here at home), some lemon and some orange essential oil for fragrance. I spray this if my hair feels at all oily, and it works wonders, and gives a "lift". I also made a flax seed gel that I use for any frizz and for the ends/and mid range areas of the hair if want/need for styling.
    One day I also added a spray (for highlighting that I made from natural high lighting ideas I read on) which consisted of lemon, honey, and I can't think of the third ingredient right now..(maybe the salt/sol again) - anyhow, I sprayed just a medium amount (to slightly dampen hair) and slept over night with this. The next morning, I had the best hair day ever ever ever - and my hair was incredibly soft!! I attributed it to the honey (raw-that's all I keep in the house - for it's amazing health benefits) because all the other ingredients are things I have used before, so, even thought the no poo is working perfectly fine for me, I might give this one a shot just because I have been wanting to do something with honey again anyways! Did you find a major softness shift?!

      Hi so sorry for the late response! I didn't get a notification on this comment! Not sure if you have seen my 1 year update on no poo, I am currently using the honey method AND using a natural shampoo bar. My scalp felt a bit more moisturized with the honey, and I found my hair was soft but after a few weeks I found that there was a waxy texture build up in the roots so I alternate with natural shampoo bars to "cleanse". Your sea spray sounds amazing by the way!!

    Hi Sarah. How is your no poo with the honey going? I have fine long hair that is dry. I found that the baking soda was super drying and caused split ends. I never really noticed a difference in health except that it made my hair course and tangly. Not cool. I experimented in between baking soda and then the Liggets bar and sometimes added in coconut milk (which ended up being too heavy and I heard doesn't absorb onto the hair follicles well). I had terrible, itchy, super flaky scalp for months. I didn't feel comfortable wearing dark tps at all because you could see flakes on my shoulders. Then I became pregnant and it became way worse! I was flipping. Then I read on Pinterest about the J.R. Ligget's oil bars for No Poo and gave them a try. I am in love!!! They are affordable (~$7), natural and even though there is an adjust ment period as with any other No Poo, I don't mind the waxier hair texture of the first weeks because the itchy flakiness has disappeared! I mean, almost completely gone since week one and I am on week six now. I'm even planning on using the bars on my baby girl's hair when she is born, because the reviews say it is so gentle on infant hair as well. I really recommmend it! Good luck :)

Though you don't need to wash it out and somedays I don't. I will instead spray it in my hair bc it darkens the hair when you let it sit kind of like the opposite of camomile that lightens. I have straight Asian hair, too. Oily hair and dandruff was a big concern for me. When I am unable to shampoo after a day, I feel really dirty and dandruff appears. I just started to switch to a natural shampoo and water rinse routine recently and dandruff was a problem. Do you wash your hair only using a showerhead? That could be the problem. I found that preparing a bucket of water, dipping my head upside down or sideways and rubbing my scalp and running my fingers through has significantly reduced dandruff and made a big difference in how clean my hair looks and feels.

    I've started increasing the amount of time between shampooing. I'm not going to do the no poo method, but I plan to modify my regime so that I wash my hair only once a week. That's what I'm aiming for. (The freedom!)
    So far, the things I've noticed are the horribleness of having greasy hair and the itchy feeling that comes with it. There's no getting away from it. It feels horrible. You can feel the sebum and grease on your hair and scalp and it feels a little suffocating.
    However, I've noticed that now, when I wash my hair, it does seem to be in better condition. It looks thicker too. I still have a long way to go. I'm only at 2 days between washes at the moment, and I will gradually increase it.
    I have no doubt that my hair will eventually start to settle and produce less grease. My confidence comes from all the blogs and videos I've seen that all describe the same 'transition' process. They all come through it in the end. This coupled with the knowledge that in 1950s women used to wash their only hair once a week... Edwardian women just once a month!
    The more you wash your hair the oilier it gets, it's the same for your face. It seems very counter intuitive, but if you want to stop your face and hair from being greasy you simply have to wash it less, not more.
    I may try the no poo method eventually. If this weaning myself off daily shampooing actually works, it will be one of the best things I've ever done.
    Thanks for this video. It's very informative.

      I woke up one morning with a lump on my eyelid. It turns out it was something called 'blepharitis'.
      I've never heard of that word before. But I had contracted this eye infection when my hair was at its most greasy. I put it down to my reducing-hair-washing experiment. It's too much of a coincidence.
      It took me about 3 months to get rid of the blepharitis. Now I'm washing my hair twice a week, using a mild shampoo and a cool water rinse to finish. I use an anti dandruff shampoo once a week.

      I've been experimenting with diet. I reduced oils and fats from my diet and it has made a definite difference.
      For example: Toast and marmalade but no butter. I also make an omelette on a stainless steel frying pan without any oil.
      The next best thing is giving up dairy. My hair is super greasy and thin when I have cheese and milk. It's quite depressing.
      Try it. It will take about 6 weeks to notice a difference. A BMI below 28% helps as well (for hormonal reasons).
      Curly hair is great! You're lucky.

    To get the full effect of no poo and help with the dandruff you should switch to spring water if you can! I know it's tedious and most people might find it a bit bothersome but it's not that expensive to buy the big jugs and heat them up a little. The results are totally worth it and I will never let hard tap water touch my hair again. A shower filter is good too but I actually still prefer the spring water. Or maybe you could even wash with the shower filtered water and then do one last rinse with spring water. Whatever works for you but you should definitely give it a chance! :-)

      From what little I know, yes. It's called the water only method. The problem is having the correct conditions, as hard water is common and needs to be counteracted. It also depends on your hair type. No-sham is often best for curly hair, so straight hair has more challenges .

    I'd suggest buying raw honey from a beekeeper that is LOCAL TO YOU. Local bees feed from local plants, you can use it in your beauty/hair creations, PLUS you can use it as sweetener in your tea, lemonade, etc., or even just have a spoonful for your health, and it will help with allergies you may get in your region.
    Best of all, you are supporting your community! That feels good too.
    A tip.... The ACV brands to look for must have "The Mother" in it. that has the enzymes and other good stuff that is a natural help. Look into clay masks, like bentonite clay, that use the same kind of apple cider vinegar that has The Mother, you might like that too. Braggs is great but you can compare with other brands/prices as long as it has The Mother. BTW, Braggs has a health drink with ACV and Manuka Honey, a book with ACV uses, recipes and more, if it interests you, do some research.
    I love the ACV rinse, I have VERY fine, thin, poker straight and oily hair. After I do the rinse, I notice the apple cider vinegar gives me more volume and a bit of texture. To those of you who skip the ACV, the baking soda being alkali might be better off with the mild acid in vinegar to neutralize it and close hair shafts opened by the sodium bicarbonate (baking soda).
    Finally, I want to say a regular straw will be too big for the dropper method, maybe try the straws that are used in cocktail drinks, the small ones that are often used as stirrers. If you like essential oils, or have other uses for droppers, you can get pipettes. They are plastic droppers similar to the glass dropper you show from the other bottle but are plastic and really inexpensive (bought set of 100 pipettes on Amazon). With one of them you can even have a more accurate way to measure a dram if anything you create calls for drams.
    Thanks for the video and tips! :-)

I've tried many things and nothing made it as bad as the shampoo bar did, even if it was specificallycreated for this problem. I don't use shampoo anymore, just diluted vinegar and plain water. And it works, since dandruff is a fungus and the acidic solution is a great treatment for it. The baking soda canceled out the vinegar and that's why you didn't get results with the combination.

    • @sarahhtran
      @sarahhtran  Před 9 lety

      Hi, when I first started I didn't do any water only to transition into no-poo. I just went straight into the method. That seemed to work for me. My transition phase was somewhere between 2-2.5 months I think? I don't really remember that much from the beginning. For when you start to see a difference it all depends on your body. Everyone's no-poo journey is different! No-poo takes a lot of experimenting and PATIENCE. You can't expect to see results overnight and if something doesn't end up working out you have to try something else and not give up. There are SOOOO many different methods for no-poo. The ones I have used are recommended for dandruff (since that is my issue). I started with baking soda with apple cider vinegar rinse, then changed to honey method only, then did honey method with apple cider vinegar, and NOW I use 100% natural shampoo bars geared towards dandruff with apple cider vinegar rinse and use the honey method with apple cider once/twice a month alternating with the shampoo bar. If you want to know more about other methods or want more feedback on your questions I recommended a Facebook No-Poo forum in this video and I linked a link to the forum in the description box.

      no! if you do baking soda once a week. Otherwise start off once every three days at first and then slowly push your days back. To once every 4 days, once every 5 days etc. until you're at once a week at least. I wash my hair now when it gets dirty looking which now is around 8 days i can sometimes push past that but I usually just do once a week/8 days just to still feel clean. Otherwise in between those wash days i do water rinses when necessary since I work out every day and just want to get rid of the sweat on my scalp.

BUT, I work out about 5-6 days a week so IF I do feel "dirty" from sweat in between my washes I will do a water rinse but no washing mixture.

    can I wash my hair ONLYwith ACV and keep it healthy and clean?
    How should I use ACV? I suppose I shoould dilute it with water? (ratio?)
    How often do you wash your hair? Once a week, twice?
    It cannot lead to hair loss in any way(cause my father is bald , but not due using ACV, he never used it..))

    • @sarahhtran
      @sarahhtran  Před 9 lety

      I'm not sure if you can use just ACV, but you do have to dilute the ACV for sure. I have been eyeballing the ACV. and I haven't used ACV in a while. But when I did I probably used about 1/4 cup - 1/3 cup of ACV and 1 cup of water to dilute. As of now, it varies I wash once a week usually but sometimes I can hold off for 1.5 weeks

    Is it okay if just use my shampoo and then rinse with ACV ? Actually i just started it yesterday and it did not really clean my dandruff . so im trying to do the no poo method but i worry abt the baking soda would dry my hair . and if i just use shampoo do i need to rinse may hair with ACV everyday ? Because of the smell . do you do the no poo method everyday ? so any idea ?

      dont do baking soda! it fried my hair...i use rye flour now and ACV. also ACV leaves no smell in your hair after it dries so ur ok w/ that....

    What would happen if the honey is pasturized?

    • @sarahhtran
      @sarahhtran  Před 9 lety

      I don't know what would "happen" but i think it's just preferred if you used raw, & unpasturized because Raw honey is naturally antibacterial and antifungal, so it can help treat a bacterial/fungal issues on the scalp

    Does it have to be warm water? I just want to mix something up and keep in in my shower, not have to measure something every time I wash my hair :(

    • @sarahhtran
      @sarahhtran  Před 9 lety

      ***** The only methods I have used are the baking soda with apple cider vinegar, the honey method with apple cider vinegar and now, all natural shampoo bars. The most efficient and fast method out of the ones I've tried is the natural shampoo bars. All you have to do is rub it into your hair until it bubbles and rinse it out then follow up with apple cider vinegar! If you do want to do the honey method then yes it does have to be warm water and it can't be kept out in your shower, you would have to store it in the fridge unfortunately :(

    Hey. I've been going for about a month, two weeks of baking soda and apple cider vinegar and two weeks of just water. Its still in the transition phase, and I was just wondering how long it took for yours to settle down?
    Of course it will be a bit different.
    I'm going to continue with this for at least a couple more months, because its a bit of an experiment; if it doesn't work so well I'll try your new method.
    I'll pass this on to some of my friends who are still using baking soda though.
    Thanks for the video,
    Magenta

      hey! I don't really remember exactly but an approximate guess would be 1 month - 2 months. I started to figure out a method to hold off the oils. When I first started and was going through the transition phase, I made my own dry shampoo mixture (which there is a video on-on my channel if you wanted to see how I made it) and used that on my greasy days. I forced myself to hold off on washes and only wash once a week. In between the days of washes I also did water rinses when I went to the gym and my hair got really sweaty. The two methods of water rinses in between and natural dry shampoo helped me get through the transition phase! I really hope this helps! Good luck on your no-poo journey! If it doesn't work out, indeed try a new method! There are SOOO many methods out there for no poo.
      I would also recommend checking out shampoo bars which is real soap made with 100% natural ingredients (Chagrins Valley Soap)! If you want to know of other methods there is a facebook group that I am a part of for no-poo and there are a handful of different people doing different methods! facebook.com/groups/nopoo/

      talha arif I made this video to share with others my discoveries. When I found the article about the baking soda method I thought that I should share it just in case others did not know and from there, they can decide for themselves if they want to stop using the baking soda and switch to a new method. I know some people who are pro baking soda, and like I said in this video it didn't do any damage to my hair but I just wanted to take a safety precaution and avoid any damage in the future. I just figured since there are so many other methods out there for no-poo I will just switch and the baking soda didn't completely resolve my issue anyways. So, its your own decision to make :)

    I tried no poo after using sulfates my whole life and the transition period was very rough and I gave up quickly. Then, i decided to not use sulfates so i used sulfate free shampoos for about 3 months and it was going great. I later decided to cut shampoo completely so i attempted no poo again and im in the second week and the transition is mot rough at all! It really amazed me. It doesnt get oily or dandruff or itch. I wonder if it was because by using no sulfates before no poo my hair wasnt as used to getting its natural oils stripped as it was before that the transition period wasnt as rough?if thats it i suggest going sulfate free for atleast two months and then going no poo for a smoother transition

    Please Awnser!
    So im just starting out the 'No poo' method and today is my first day of trying it! So what i did was i took one cup of water and mixed one tablespoon of baking soda into it for the cleaning and for the rinse i used a 500ml bottle of water and added like two drops of MALT vinegar into it. Can someone tell me if this will work? Also im struggling to find places that sell any ACV or Raw Honey. If anyone else is from the UK could they tell me where they get their ingrediants?

    Baking Soda is not the problem, when washing hair. How frequent we wash can be a problem. Having Alkaline pH levels added to the body here and there is an important part of cell life. Our ancestors lived naturally, and as a general given were alkaline. They did not wash their hair too frequently.
    Of course the question is which ancestors and how long ago?

    I'm just trying to be kind & help you out. Today I inquired and learned that not everyone is suitable to that oil and you should buy natural kind of that oil if has chemicals then oil it can not do the job that you want. and speaking of vinegar it can make very dry hair. Baking soda you can not use a lot of time there is different method. You just can all the time use baking soda I hear that to
