Everyone who handles firearms responsibly get in the habit of handling guns in a very specific way. Even though he knew the gun was inoperable, you still handle it like an operable gun for the sake of your audience. You have to let your audience know that even if you believe a gun is inoperable, you always leave room for the unlikely circumstance that you've made a mistake. This was a teachable moment for this guy's audience, and he bungled it so badly, even Hannah's defense attorney went red with embarrassment.

He was never even qualified as an expert for the purpose of this trial. No idea what the defense was thinking putting this man on the stand.

This is why training is so important. I've trained highschoolers in the military to handle automatic HMG/BMGs who have had better understanding of firearm safety rules than this "expert" - What part of TREAT EVERY FIREARM as if it was loaded? - Heck - for the purpose of the THIS case, the "expert" should be handling a bb gun as if it was a WMD. THATS THE WHOLE POINT. That is literally WHY the whole trial is happening. NEGLEGENCE AND COMPLACENCY
He just finished explaining to the court that it was not a gun, then he announced it when he touched it. This was all theatrics by the prosecutor to discredit him. Luckily for her, he actually was a dumbass.
