What started out as a refreshingly straight-and-to-the point tight 90-minute action movie starring Keanu Reeves shooting people has morphed into an expansive world of assassins with a whole bunch of lore and special coins. The latest installment in the franchise is John Wick Chapter 4, clocking in at a wild 3 hours of runtime.
John Wick Chapter 4 definitely raises some questions. Like how does John keep surviving the impossible? Do the cops really not care about all this public bloodshed at highly recognizable locations? How does John manage to travel internationally as he does? Is he really gone, or are we going to bring him back somehow?
To answer all these questions, check out the pitch meeting that led to John Wick Chapter 4!

“He’s a valued customer of Offscreen Airlines” 🤣💀
Best line easily!!! :D
The best Airline out there, when you want to travel somewhere, but don't want to explain or pay anything. They also do not check for any weapons or other restricted items - if you need it at your destination, you can take it with you.
Everybody in this world is an assasin...except airline employees...and people who travel by flight...and flight crews...and...
That's a thing they said in the pitch meeting!
@@KenLieck wow wow wow...wow
I can just imagine the actual producers saying every time "how can we basically kill john wick but still allow to come back in the next one"
Even within an individual movie, the John Wick series is full of "but I thought we established that..." "I don't care, do it anyway" situations.
producer: "because when john wick dies he only dies for as long as he wants to stay dead." "just like when he gets hit by a bullet or hurt during an attack."
I can’t wait until some random assassin walks into a room full of the high table people and says “somehow, John wick returned”
He comes back as a dog
He has enough plot armor for every super hero from dc and marvel combined. atrocious
I love how everyone in the movies progressed from "OMG you killed JOHN WICK's dog?! You're toast!" to "Hey let's try killing John Wick, gonna be super easy, barely an inconvenience."
It's been long enough that all the people who said stuff like "OMG you killed JOHN WICK's dog?! You're toast!" have had time to fake their own deaths and retire to tropical islands (except for that one guy who moved to Scotland because to heck with ever going a day without rain again). Meaning only the dumb assassins who think they can take John Wick are left.
“Forget it. John Wick is invincible”
“I will pay you $1,000”
“Consider it done”
Anybody notice how there are countless movies of heroes girlfriends, and families being killed by villain, but no villain was hated more by the general public than the villain that would dare kill a dog. You can blast through family members all day, but as soon as you shoot a dog, you are the most hated being in the universe!
@@DustinBarlow8P Yeah, Screenwriter Guy mentions that people like dogs much more than they like humans in the pitch meeting for the first John Wick movie!
I guess it kind of makes sense. The wife of an assassin must be at least kind of okay with his previous job, even if he wanted to quit, but a puppy is pure love and definitely doesn't have a choice.
I'm surprised there was no mention of every character deciding to shout "Aahhhhh!" before attacking the blind guy, just to make sure he'd know they're about to hit him. Very nice assassins.
Shouting "Aahhhhh!" before attacking a blind guy is TIGHT!
that is common courtesy when fighting blind people!
Oh, VERY courteous assassins!
There exists an old tradition when engaging blind assassins that one must shout or scream “Aahhhh!” before attacking.
Not sure why they made him blind when they basically ignored it half the time or made silly, elaborate ways for him to stand a chance.
His blindness added nothing to the character or much of the action other than making me think 'well ok, I guess I'll just go with it'.
I think John Wick 3 is still the perfect blend of OTT action, choreography and simple but effective plot. This one went to far. The story was a bit crap and the action was either overlong or just downright ridiculous.
Not knocking the work that went into the action scenes. They look great and they all have highlights for me. Just didn't flow into a cohesive whole for me like the other movies.
The runtime is just too much too. These movies lend themselves to being in and out. I can rewatch the others over and over because they are no nonsense. This was bloated next to the others.
"If the scene looks cool, you must allow the writer to get there by any means necessary"
Every single action movie ever.
Except action scenes in some movies are just not cool enough to invoke the Rule of Cool.
So the movie can happen
Yeah. That's the point. Of the joke you're quoting. What?
Some movies are so clearly just two cool scene ideas with a bunch of filler in between 😂
this rule is the reason how we got that warehouse fight scene with batfleck.
"So he's chosen death" is just the best way to describe anyone that chooses to fight John Wick 😂
Unless it is Chuck Norris. Then Death chooses him. And loses. But John Wick still lives. Because Chuck Norris killed Death. And then both live happily ever after.
We must join him Gandalf, we must join Sauron

No joke, Ryan should pitch his own action parody movie.
Ryan appreciating that we’re not doing what we’re supposed to be doing is so caring.

The great thing about flying OSA is that you get to where you want to go in no time and at no cost. And you never have to worry about lost luggage because you never bring any. Also, no pesky TSA or customs to get through. Fly OSA... the preferred airline of movie action heroes (and villains) the world over!

"Donnie Yen as a blind guy who's good at fighting that sounds familiar"....... This was pure gold!!!!!!!

My theory is that John Wick has released so many souls by himself that the rules that govern the reality of his universe are starting to shift. Berserk rules.

“He’s a valued customer of the offscreen airlines” got me big time
Coincidentally, the duration of this pitch meeting sketch is also the duration of John Wick 4 if you skip the fight scenes.
Truer words have never been spoken lol
But you watch John Wick for those fight scenes, otherwise why do you watch it? For Keanu. I even want to learn some of his moves.

@@qiamylovestitch3570 Funny thing. In John Wick 1, I watched for the story and characters.
So like the dog, we killed those off and replaced them with replicants when we made JW 2, 3, and 4.

Because.
im gonna need you to get way off my back about this sir
Rule of cool I suppose lol
Everyone knows stairs get easier with practice. What do you think step training is for? People put baby gates in their houses mostly so their infants can't learn to climb stairs too early and escape the house before they've learned to poop correctly, because your poopy runaway kid out in public would be an embarrassment.
That was actually my one moment where I felt they took it too far.
4:22 I was laughing so freaking hard at this scene. felt like hot rod when he fell down a mountain. The entire theatre was quiet and serious and i was just hysterically laughing
so hot rod takes place in the john wick universe? sounds good.

Ryan, you should do some pitch meetings for classic movies. Dress up like a 1930s producer and do Wizard of Oz or something.
I think that's a brilliant idea!
nice!
I would love it if he did the Shining or The Good The Bad & The Ugly etc...
You’re a good boy
Yes, do older movies, I don’t watch newer pictures.
I love that this is the first time Screenwriter Guy and Producer Guy's names have actually been revealed on-screen. And they're just Screenwriter Guy and Producer Guy. I like to believe Ryan is listening to the community. After all, taking input from your viewers is super-easy, barely an inconvenience.
Tell that to disney
Hey, those are their names from the OTHER pitch meetings!
5:12 Damn it, Ryan! You had to drop that truth bomb in the end, didn't you?
With all of the amazing naming of characters, I'm not 100% convinced John Wick is not just a candle with a wig.
I refuse to check to make sure, but they missed the opportunity to call the hired murderer Caine instead of Cane, or the movie villain Marqee instead of Marquis, didn't they? It still wouldn't have been actually clever, but at least marginally less boring.
Homophones are *tight*!
Actually, he's a paraffin toilet with a wig. "Candle With A Wig" will be Elton John's megahit tribute song when Wick does die.
🎵 "Candle with a wig" 🎵🎶
There's a very famous (in RPG circles) writer of tabletop games named John Wick whose been writing games since the early 90s. I like to imagine the movies are about him and between writing 7th Sea and Legend of Five Rings he was also a super assassin.
@@richmcgee434Not sure if I'm missing something about your comment but he was in fact called Caine lol. Also marquis is a title of nobility, not a name, hence why the character had it because he's, well, a snobby marquis, like somebody could be a duke or a count.
Only in John Wick movies does it make sense to see Civilians dancing and partying while people are getting brutally murderer right in front of them.
You're right. Because even in the Matrix they reacted to henchmen getting merced.
I only remembered two or three looks of confusion around the water scene. Must've been a great DJ 😂
Seems like now John wick is just like a video game and he kills enemies in front of pre-rendered/animated backgrounds. The scene at the roundabout was the most videogame movie scene i've ever seen. The cars just drive in circles completely unaffected by all those killers and cars on the side and shots fired. They don'T get slower, try to get arround them, just just fly by on a predefined path. Like in a videogame where you have to fight enemies and avoid passing cars. It's really a horrible scene, one car crashes and the camera moves and there is no driver in the car. And then there is this pretty cool scene in the building where the camera is on top and follows John Wick. Also very videogame like, but at least not super-super-stupid.
@@mr.joshua6818 So people don't stop partying when Keanu is "mercing"?
The dancers reacted eventually, so I figured they were all high as a kite
I like how the bad guys always come running up to him instead of shooting at him from a distance. They seem to think if they get within an arms distance from John they will be safe?
The magic bullet-proof suits that protect him from any attack outside of hand to hand distance have been established, so they don't really have a choice about the engagement range.
The funniest thing about this is “the rule of cool” is an actual Hollywood rule. Absolute legend

I only recently learned of the passing of Lance Reddick and I assumed it happened somewhere during the filming and so they added his character's funeral scene to the movie as a way to pay respect BUT NO! they did that before it happened! and that's just.. incredibly unfortunate. RIP
It’s kinda eery when that happens. Like Chadwick Boseman was sent to the spirit realm in Black Panther and ended up coming back but then in real life he passed and it reminded me of all those scenes.

One of the best pitch meetings in a while - double it!
I did think the writers just gave up on John staging a coup against the high table. He after all was able to take out the high representatives. In the end the movie hammered away that John isn’t bigger than the system. And though he did beat them technically in the duel, he lost so who knows if a John Wick sect develops
"So he has chosen death" was so hilariously said Im desperate for it to be a new catchphrase for when someone does something that will get them killed
"Then there's Puppers."
"What's he do?"
"He's a puppy."
An Across the Spider-Verse pitch meeting would be TIGHT
This Pitch Meeting should have been twice as long as the first John Wick Pitch Meeting.
'Valued customer of offscreen airlines' 2:42 real gold Ryan. I'm gonna keep saying that one when I watch movies
Thanks for that anxiety trigger at the end. Loved it. 🤣
Yeah, that was a thing to put it lightly. Feeling quite attacked right now and I'm not okay.
I love the John Wick movies but the problem with having him survive so many ludicrously certain death injuries (including the staircase scene in this movie alone) is that when he was shot just once at close range, I fully expected him to be totally fine. And even when a grave was shown, I kept expecting the camera to pull back and show John alive, or a character to smirk indicating he wasn't really dead etc. It rather robbed the ending of its emotion for me, cos I had no idea he'd died till the credits
I'm okay with all of that until the ending of the 3rd movie. That fall should've crippled him at worst. He should've been laid up for 6 months. And then the first 3 movies happen over a period of something like 2 weeks, so surviving each movie on its own is fine to me, but in combination, it's practically impossible. Then 4 comes along and it has the stair sequence. Why not show him getting shot in the head point blank range and have him survive that? Why not chop his head off and he sews it back on his shoulders? I mean, if you're not going to be somewhat realistic, then get really crazy with it. This is also why Nobody is a far better movie than the Wick ones, it's way more realistic.
Lol prior to this John only got flesh wounds and hit in non fatal areas.
Also the fight scenes, they're cool but some lasted far too long and the entire race to the church was unnecessary at this point because we all know by now john can kill entire armies by himself, and did we really have to see all those disposable goons get killed for another 20min
@@jackcassidy9963 that dive off the building where he smacked his spine and head repeatedly on the way down was more than enough to kill him. So was falling down that many stairs repeatedly in this movie. You don't need bullets for an injury to be fatal. John was inhuman with how much he survived. So it was logical to think he could survive those bullets too within the rules of this movie universe.
The whole third and fourth movie felt like watching someone play a computer game with a dumb story and invincibility cheat activated... yawn
