    San Mateo Peak, a beautiful and fun hike with a fantastic summit and sweeping views, is not officially there. The trail is not on the Forest Service maps, and you won’t find “San Mateo Peak” anywhere on an official topographic map. But the trail and peak are there all right, and in this guide, I’ll show you how to hike to the top and enjoy this fun peak in Cleveland National Forest.

    I've done this one a few times and it's a good little hike to a nice peak with awesome panoramic views. I wondered about the trail that continues beyond the boulders so thanks for that information!

    That was a fun hike! I got lucky and did it in March 2017- spring approaching after a very wet winter- the chaparral was in bloom! I also remember that deflated basketball at the San Mateo Peak trail marker! It was on the ground when I did the hike! Next time, I will have to follow the trail past the peak- hopefully it leads to that small meadow just past the peak!

      Ha yea, the ball was on the ground across from the sign for a long time, someone put it up there in the last few weeks. Glad you got to check out the hike - this whole area grows on me more and more.
