The Mt Charleston Peak hike takes you to the highest point around Las Vegas, at 11,916 feet. This guide to Charleston Peak follows the South Loop Trail, a tough 8.5-mile climb with half the hike done above 10,000 feet in an alpine wonderland. It’s got scenery that rivals any National Park, and it’s all under an hour from the Las Vegas Strip. This underrated hike needs to be on your bucket list; it’s one of my favorites.

I hiked Mt. Charleston back in May of this year, and yes it is a amazing trail. I love the section near the saddle around 10,700 feet where the trail becomes an Alpine meadow.
Yea, same, that's why I love the South Loop. That whole stretch above 10700 is magical.
Thank you so much for this video! My daughter and I climbed it yesterday and this video gave us the information and confidence to do it!
Congrats, this peak is one of my favorites...
Thanks dude! Perfect video! We're attempting this week with my daughters.
Have fun, weather looks perfect!
I live in England and love hiking - I plan on doing this and other mountains in 2025 for my 50th Birthday trip in the August . Hopefully i'll still be fit and healthy and can do this along with others such as Telescope Peak, Mount Whitney and the South Sister. Great video, website and info. All the best from England, Jim.
Amazing place, great gike. Brings up a lot of memories. Thanks for this.
Thanks for the hike...nice tour..cant wait to do it!
Awesome video. I love mt Charleston
Nice video! Keep em coming!
Thank you1! 👍👍👍
Another good video. Can't believe the amount and variety of hikes you've done!
Thanks, only wish I had more time to do more guides!
Fantastic! My friend lives in Vegas, so I have another excuse to crash at his pad!! Looks like a wonderful adventure!
your guide is awesome man! thank you for the info and video walk through. i plan on hiking this trail next weekend
Have fun, this hike is one of my all time faves...
Completed this hike on June 25, and I made sure to watch this video the day before. Your insights and tips were extremely useful to me and made a big difference. Thank you for what you do.
Awesome, congrats, and so glad the the guide came in handy. Such a beautiful hike, hoping to get back up there this Fall...
Cool! Would watch it again!
Soon I hope I can get on the top!
Should be free of snow in the next month or two - haven't been there since last year so not sure of the conditions now.
Very nice. I did this hike for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I loved it so much that I went back a week later but started at Trail Canyon to the North Loop, then hiked Mummy Mountain, before continuing to Charleston peak. Then took the South Loop down, with a detour to Griffith peak before descending. Long day, but it was worth it. Like you said, "I love it here, I love it." 👍👊😎
👍 Nice, yea hoping to get back to the area and do a guide of the full loop, haven't been back since COVID and miss that whole wilderness area, really a gem
te-wa (me) and pickles did mt san jacinto last month. this will be our NEXT big hike! thanks, hiking guy!
awesome, yea, this one is beautiful, you'll love it
Awesome video!
Thank you!
Pro Tip : 17 switchbacks to Echo Overlook and then 22 switchbacks from Echo Overlook to the crest of the Ridge/very start of the Meadows/Griffith Peak turn off...
Thanks for this, I really want to do this hike and this is very informative
You're welcome, and yea, go for it, it's a spectacular hike, on of my faves
Thank you so much for the turn by turn directions I plan to do a solo summit hike as a day trip this Monday. I’ve made it to the junction but had to turn around do to limited time sadly.
You'll love it, it's a great hike, one of my faves
Got to hike this place earlier this year, it was awesome, I could see a dust devil all the way in death valley
That's awesome. And yea, I love this hike, one of my all-time faves. I didn't get to do it this year because of all the craziness, but normally I bag it every year. Just 100% gorgeous and fun.
Good video. I've done that hike about five times. When did they put the wood Shelter by Mount Griffith
Thanks-great video! Just did Mt. Timpanogos last week, similar elevation gain, but far more lush scenery (wildflowers & waterfalls galore) - this looks like a similar workout, but a bit barren in comparison. Will likely give it go as I'll be in the area.
Timpanogos is a great hike. I got caught up there in a thunderstorm years ago and had to boogie down. And yea, similar specs but much different feel on Charleston. Give it a go, it's one of my faves.
Hey HikingGuy, are you planning to create a guide for Timpanogos?
Hi, I really enjoy the way you make these hiking videos, and I definitely subscribed. Would you know of a guide that would take me up this trail?
Thank you very much.
Thank you, glad you enjoy the vids 🙏👍 - I can do a guided hike up there, but we'd likely have to wait until later in the season when the snow is gone. Check out the guided hike page on my website for all the details.
i’m going to vegas in 2 weeks. me and my mom are going to hike this and i’m so excited! i’ve only ever hiked cathedral rock, but i’m gonna bring lots of water and try my hardest!!! i can’t wait!!!!
Nice, yea, this hike is epic, you'll love it.
Could you define whomp, whomp? I’m not familiar with the term.
I'm 9 years old. Can I hike this trail without getting altitude sickness?
It's hard to say and it's always different. I'd try and stop if you feel sick. I have some tips on dealing with altitude sickness here > hikingguy.com/hiking-trails/hikes-around-mt-whitney/mt-whitney-hike/ - good luck on your hike!
Is there any exposure throughout the hike? Anything to freak you out if you're not fond of heights... Asking for a friend 😂
Ha, no real cliff edges on this one unless you go off the trail. The whole second half is above the tree line and exposed to the elements, but again, no real crazy drops or edges.
at 8:10 why left where does right take you??
Would altitude sickness be an issue hiking to the peak?
Yup - check out my Whitney guide for some altitude sickness guidance
Did you really reach 11,916 ft? I have been Brian Head Peak (11,312 ft) but not Mt. Charleston Peak. Which road (156 to Lee Canyon) or (158 to Kyle Canyon) leads to Cathedral Picnic area and the parking lot?
Check out the link in the description for the parking and all the details 👍
How many hours did this take you?
Check out the link in the description, all info on the website.
Is this a 9 mile hike up and a 9 mile hike back??? Wow! If I could do this hike at all I'm pretty sure it would take me about 9 hours ... maybe 10! And that's if I hurried ... I think I should plan for 12 hours just to take it slow and spend 1/2 hour or so at the top.
Yup, about 18 miles roundtrip. It can be done in a day if you are fit. Make sure you read this too: hikingguy.com/hiking-trails/las-vegas-hikes/mt-charleston-peak-hike-south-loop-trail/
Nice video, up to the point where you said you can see the curvature of the earth. Lol. I got a good laugh out of that. You can’t see the see curvature from any mountain on earth, unless you are at least 60,000 feet up Lol.i like your videos though. Very informative
Well, I mean you can see the horizon is curved, I think that's how most folks would interpret that. Will make sure I use the right wording next time to avoid any confusion. I'm also 50,000 feet tall, so maybe that's what's going on.... 😁
Pah-rump... There is no F at the end.
It's not pahrumpf or pahrumph it's Pah-Rump
yup
