Calico Tanks trail is iconic, a must go hiking trailer for all levels. While turtlehead peak trail is more challenge but still a moderate difficulties, pay attention to the trail marker, stay on trail to avoid lost. Ice box canyon trail is all about scrambling among big rocks, your knee will definitely talk to you when you completed it, but it is cool particularly in a hot day.
Good stuff. I hiked Turtlehead 20 years ago. Great hike! Looks like much better markings now👍
Yea much better than it used to be. I remember the blazes on the climb were the same color as the lichen and it was hard to stay on a trail that wasn't vertical
I appreciate your attention to detail and the accuracy of your historic and cultural comments. I agree; these are the 3 premier hikes in Red Rock. You've done a great job placing them in context with Las Vegas.
Amazing, thank you!
Thanks! Can't wait to check it out in February! So excited 😁
great video. Very informative!!
A very nice informative video . Thank you for it!
Thank you for wonderful video! All the details you shared are very helpful! Can’t wait to visit Red Rocks!
Excellent video! 👏🏼 Well edited and planned 🤌🏼 this was very helpful.
Great video, I've only done Calico tanks a few times when I have visited Vegas but will definitely check out the other two you discussed, cheers!
Thank you so much, your timing is perfect! I'm heading there next week.
Awesome video! I loathe casinos so I never thought I’d want to go back to Vegas, but now it’s back on the list. Thank you!
I was just there last week! I had never heard of it before and it completely blew my mind.
Great video, and 100% agree. It's such a great place with amazing trails and awesome views!!
Thanks a lot for providing information about Red Tock Canyon. I will download the information as I am planning to visit in April
Well done. One of the best hiking guide videos I've watched on CZcams. Thanks
I did Bridge mountain and Mount Wilson out there.Hard, long and dangerous but so beautiful. One of my favorite places.
It's one of the only reasons I go to Vegas. There are some great trail races out there. I will be going out for a race again next year. I can't wait!
Amazing video with very useful information specially for your first time at Red Rock Canyon!
Wife and I went out to red rock last week. Waterfalls and creeks running fast and high thanks to a great wet winter out west
I'm taking my family to Vegas over President's Day weekend. We'll definitely check out one of these hikes. Thanks Cris!
Red Rock Canyon is awesome, love it! There’s also great trails @ Valley of the Fire 💟 So many places to explore besides just casinos.
Once again great work Cris both your recent and old/previous videos are excellent as always.
Your the best dude out there when it comes to Day Hikes 👍
thank you!!
thank you hiking guy
After years of getting to LV, then heading west to Death Valley, I finally checked out RRC. Never made it to DV that year! And have been going back to Red Rocks ever since.
Excellent video Chris. I wish all hiking videos followed your format👍
thank you! 👍
It should definitely be a national park
Rookie hikers did part of turtle head and most of ice box. We stopped when the trail dropped down in river bed. Waterfall was not flowing anyway. I had a bum knee and didn't want to over do it.
Thanks!
BIG BIG THANK YOU!
These 3 hikes are definitely good to get a little taste of the area but just the tip of the iceberg if you’re a fit hiker capable of class 2/3/4 scrambling. There are routes to all of the peaks along the scenic loop and none are easy but all are amazing!! Red Rock is much more vast and extreme than meets the eye. Reminds me of all the epics I’ve had out there, place is magic!!!
Fortunate I hiked these three trails back last November and if you do have time please hike Kraft boulders, it is amazing the limestone just incredible.
Other great scenic hikes is keystone thrust and white rock. Both I’d consider easy but white rock maybe moderate for some dude to the distance.
It's the best
Very nicely done! Did you get an editor recently? This video has a different feel from your others and it's definitely an improvement.
Thank you - and no - all me on these things - I've invested a lot of time in learning how to shoot better video, color grade, do motion graphics overlays, etc. - don't have the $$$ to hire anyone so I've become a jack of all trades
Great video! You need to visit Mineral King, you won't be disappointed! Just watch out for the marmots early in the season.
Was there years ago - need to get back for sure
Love your videos! One suggestion I would ask is to talk about when you are hiking (time off year, time of day), how long the hike is and how long it would take the "average" person to hike it. Another good thing to know is when might be the ideal time of year to hike this and why this trail stands out. Thank you!
Not following.... I have a hole section on when to hike and I list the distances, times, etc for each hike
Oh shoot, did I miss it? I will review. Thanks
Nice video - Thanks for sharing.
A couple of questions:
1) Are snakes a problem in the area? (months they are the biggest concern?)
2) Do you need a park reservation in June? (their website was not clear on that)
3) I visited your website, but did not readily find what your fees were for guide work?
Thanks
Cheers!
Thank you for the great video. I also appreciate your gear recommendations and have purchased several items with your links. I like the trail runners and backpack very much. So, I would like to know if you recommend a brand or type of hiking socks. Trail runners may dry fast, but not the socks I wear. Any thoughts?
Darn Tough work well for me and dry as good as can be expected
Okay, great. Thank you. Please add it to your gear list unless I missed it. Thanks again. @@Hikingguy
@@josephjameson6044 think you might have missed it, they're on there 👍🏻
I hiked the Turtlehead Peak trail just last week. I really enjoyed it except I got kind of lost on the descent. On the last part of the hike after the saddle the trail was difficult to follow. I was following the white blazes on the rocks but at some point I just wandered off trail. I found my way back when I saw some fellow hikers on the trail about 100 feet above me.
Have to buy a National Park pass to get in though. It's patrolled by National Park rangers too.
Hey there … have you ever hiked Bryce Canyon in Utah? I’m thinking of doing it as a beginner hike…
I have but don't have any guides up - hoping to get some up this year.
Great video. I got married in Valley of Fire!
that's pretty awesome
10 minutes from my house. i always go there for sunset
Thanks for this...going to Vegas for the second time in January and never got to go there the first time! Where are you standing at 35:00??
Calico overlook
@@Hikingguy Thank you…I’m excited to see it in person! Looks amazing. 📸😎
FYI - Vehicle break-ins are a problem at Red Rock so don't leave stuff visible to temp the thieves. Make sure to get a reservation in advance if you are going on a weekend or holiday. Don't count on getting a cell signal inside the park.
Sorry about a second post! How about the type of gear being taken on this hike and why. Again, thank you!
I have some recommendations in the video
Nice video. A little off topic, but regarding your comment about the Jurassic period, T-Rex did not live during that time!
dump! you're right - one of the docents at the visitor center told me that and I should have double checked... thanks for the correction
I've done Turtlehead Peak in 2009. Look for an ammo box and sign in your name and hometown.
Its a disservice to Nevada that there is only one National Park in the state (well two if you include parts of DVNP). There is a case to elevate Red Rocks and Calico Hills to National Park status, or even as National Preserve (like Mojave Nat'l Preserve) but definitely should be part of NPS not BLM.
$22 entry fee? What the
If you have an America the Beautiful pass it's free
Bluetooth speakers. The perfect tool for inconsiderate ‘hikers’.
Great video! The last 3 times I’ve been in Vegas, I never set foot in a casino. Instead I spent all my time at Red Rocks, Valley of Fire, Lake Mead and Mount Charleston. I had a much better time and left town with a lot more money!
Ha - same - it's such a culture shock to drive back into Vegas from somewhere like Mt Charleston - but overall Vegas has been a great jump-off point for me to fly from SoCal and avoid traffic, then rent car and hit Red Rocks, Zion, Bryce, North Rim, etc. - it's just the Vegas part that's a bit of a downer
Obviously.. casinos are lame
Timely post. I've never hiked in this area before but I'm going to be spending some time in southern Nevada at the end of the month and I've been wanting to hike in this area for quite some time. Thanks, Cris! ~ Mike
You'll love it, it's pretty great
You will not be disappointed! And be sure and go through the visitor center. That interpretive area is one of the best I've seen in any park.
@@jaytolbert7538 Thanks for the suggestion. I'll make sure to stop and check it out.
I was here in December. It was awesome. Spent the whole day doing about 15 miles. Calico tanks was great. Definitely want to do Turtlehead peak and Ice Box Canyon next time. Mount Charleston was beautiful as well.
Nice and yea, Charleston is one of my faves, going to get back this summer for sure
I visited here back in 2017 and had just a few hours in the morning to explore. My plan was to do the Calico Tanks trail, but when I arrived, it was closed - they were doing work on the trail. Instead I walked along the Grand Loop Trail at the base of Calico Hills. It was a nice consolation prize. Fantastic video.. thanks for sharing!
Another great video 👍👍 I love your informational text box overlays. Nicely done. Thanks for all you do for the hiking community ❤😊
thank you!
Another great guide. Thanks as well for using higher quality video.
thank you! I've been spending some time trying to make some better quality videos so thanks for mentioning it.
Love Red Rock and Calico Basin and Valley of Fire! Every Vegas trip now we make time for those spots, it’s beautiful!
