- Mt Charleston is located roughly about an hour outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. The hike up to the Mt Charleston peak is the toughest yet one of the coolest trails to do in the Las Vegas area. At 17.2 miles round trip and 4,819 ft of elevation gain, this hike will totally push you to your limits! What I love about this hike is the beauty of the trail and the many viewpoints it has. You get to see a lot of the damage from the huge Carpenter One fire 7 years ago. Also, before the summit, you can visit a plane crash site where 14 people perished back in 1955! When you do finally reach the peak of Mt Charleston, you feel a great sense of accomplishment that is priceless. In this video, I take you along with me on this magnificent hike and show you all the great highlights of the trail. Before you summit, Mt Charleston watch this video!
Eric, I love your videos. They are all 'real world' and show the good and the bad of every hike from the perspective of someone who is not a 'professional guide/mountaineer' and that makes all the difference. It reminds me that 'a hike is just a walk made little longer and a little harder, but the real work is all mental'. You are an inspiration. I'm hiking to the summit on 9/17/2021 weather permitting, and if it is not permitting hoping to at least get to Griffith Peak. You're the man!
Hey Scott, I do really really appreciate your kind words. I'm extremely happy that you enjoy my videos and you find them very inspiring! Yes I'm just a normal guy who doesn't do anything too extreme but loves to hike. Charleston Peak is extremely challenging but the experience you gain from it is priceless. It's an amazing hike as you could see. Definitely highly recommend you start as early as you can so you have plenty of daylight when you come down the mountain again. Back in 1985 i walked up south loop trail. 2 engines with the props were still up there at that time. Now i'm 72 with a tin hip. Thanks for bring me along. Thinking of having my ashes scattered on top. I lived in those mountains. At least 5 days a week, i would drive up to north loop trail and hike with my black lab. Then back into the valley to work at a pizza joint. Did not have much, but i was young and happy.
Oh wow that's cool how much of the wreckage used to still be there in in 85! I bet the hiking trails were not as crowded as they are now. So glad I was able to bring back some fond memories for you with this video. Thanks for sharing your memories with me.
Almost 5,000 ft of elevation gain, that's huge! Love the leaves color. "This part really sucks!" Thank you for the heads up Eric :) What a scene at 5:21, so much desolation. The music was perfect. It doesn't seem windy so far. There is still quite a lot of debris from the plane :( This is fantastic you are challenging yourself and hiking up these peaks, hat off Sir! Yeah that's a lot of miles and elevation gain to climb in one day and I don't plan on doing that again in the future 🤣. Yeah I am so happy I have really been challenge myself over the Summer 😀. Yeah I'm surprised also that they're still all that debris from a 1955 plane crash still there. Thanks you so much Alex!
Eric. Absolutely Excellent video sir. Loved how you stitched your video together. I'm on the east coast and years ago, my wife and I just drove up to the lodge area but stopped there. I still regret not having the guts to try the peak way back then. Very well done!
Yeah, I've done a lot of hiking in my time, and this is definitely the hardest one I've ever done! With that being said, though, it was something I couldn't miss doing! Especially since I live here! Thank you so much for watching. I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Outstanding Eric! You must be very pleased and proud of yourself to make it to the summit of Mt Charleston. The shots of the burnt trees were both beautiful and eerie, the views despite the smoke were stunning throughout! Hey Renee! Thank you so much. It's definitely a really hard hike but you do think you can eventually do it yourself. I saw you did Fletcher Peak the other day. And then now graduate to Griffith Peak. Then you should be ready for Charleston Peak. Just start when the sun comes up so you have plenty of daylight to finish the hike. It's a hike you definitely have to do at least once in your life.

I'm older than most, but I had no problem with 'altitude sickness', (nor with the hike in general.) That was my only concern because I'm not use to that altitude. But I'm just one data point in the mix, everyone needs to know their own abilities. 🙂

Awesome video Eric. Your commentary reminded me of ny climb up Mount Kilimanjaro that was tuff! About 6 days up and 2 down doing what you did each day so glad I was in shape. You should do Kilimanjaro Eric! (5895m or 19340ft). Keep climbin eh!!

Even though I have 158 videos in my watch list queue, I had to watch this one straight away, as soon as I saw it go up. At over 17 miles and over 4.8K of elevation that was some achievement and I am unsure if my knees could take that much punishment in one day, to be honest - superb effort! Such a shame about the burnt trees from the Carpenter 1 fire and the present wildfires. The views away from the trees were breath-taking and had to lol at the false summit! It would have been nice to have had a memorial for the 14 who lost their lives on the side of Mt Charleston, such a shame they are not properly remembered. Real pleased you made it to the top, the views were insane and so worth the effort! I hope you signed the book and did you do it before Diane? Superb achievement Eric, cheers Alan
Yeah this hike really packed a lot into it for 17 miles! It was an insanely hard hike but I'm so glad I did it. They do have a small memorial for the plane crash victims at the Mt Charleston Visitor Center. But it would have been nice to have one right at the crash site as well. Diane actually did this hike one week before I did. Alan thank you so much for a bumping my video to the front of the line and I do appreciate you checking it out.
wow I could feel your pain as you hiked to the top, you could see how steep it was from the video and to see though burnt out trees was cool but the view from the top was worth the trip getting there
Yeah this hike was really hard to do especially the final push up the mountain! Thankfully this hike packed in a lot of great sights along the way! Thanks Craig!

Yeah I was a long steep hike that was slow 🐌 moving but extremely gorgeous!! It was all worth when you make it to the top of the mountain and feel that great sense of accomplishment and knowing you summited the highest mountain in the state of Arizona!! My God Eric, that is a long hike! Wow, look at the colors starting to pop. They are only starting to peek through here. Man, I think you keep picking hikes and that are more and more beautiful. Got to hate those false summits! It's a sad story about the plane. I'm surprised they left some of the stuff there honestly. Cool artifact though. Woohoo! Summit to yourself!
Yeah I've just been doing much harder hikes lately and I guess they ended up having super awesome views! Yeah the next video put out which is the hike I did today had way more false summits then this! Yeah it is a sad part of history about the plane and surprisingly the wreckage is still there. Great story of struggle and accomplishment. I could tell it was a struggle, I could hear you loosing your voice some in the end. That happens to me to on real tough hikes. The burned trees had a beauty all off there own, and was kinda freaky to see. Hope going down went okay, but you posted this video so I am guessing you made it okay. LOL. Great video buddy, most excellent.
Yeah this hike totally killed me but I conquered the mountain! I really wished I was able to vlog my trip down but I had to get back down to the bottom before the sun went down. Yeah it was a tough hike back down but it got a lot better once I reached the initial switch backs down. Thank you so much Lance I really appreciate it!

Oh yeah was very strenuous. 4 hours and 28 minutes to the summit. The way down was pretty rough for me I got a blister on the switchbacks down. Super beautiful out there though. I’m pretty sure I was able to see lake mead sitting behind Frenchman and sunrise mountains from the junction as well.

in addition, be one heck of a loop haha up south down north but this seems so much easier cuz on the other side the north approach last half mile or so people have called it the death march now im curious as to really what way is better overall....seems like this loop though once the first 4 miles is over its either flat or just a gradual ascent ??
Well the first four miles is pretty brutal, after that seems pretty flat but it's actually not when you have to return. There is a decline on the way back and you didn't notice and you're tired already so it's killer. Then the final mile or whatever up to the peak pretty brutal as well.
great video bud i hiked the north loop and unfortunately did not make it to the top i think i got maybe a mile or so before devils thumbs but looking at the south loop and at around the 5 minute mark there are places to camp so that way seems way more doable but if im not mistaken there might have been a few possible camping spots once the trail leveled out around 5 or 6 mile marker on the north loop
Yeah on the South Loop there is a place to camp. It's really hard to do in a day but it's possible. Might be better if you can camp out and finish it honestly. I'm glad you enjoyed the video my friend and thank you! It should be in another month or two a good time to give it another try.
@@adventuringoutdoorswitheric yeah great video never seen the south loop and have always hiked up the north loop most of the time just a little before the spring where the horse trough is but yeah camping under the stars after the 4 sufferfest and then just finishing the other 4 miles or so would be ideal i just want to get to the top lol ...are you from vegas

I’m planning on driving from Reno to do the South Lake to North Lake Loop with at least one night of camping. Could you give me some insight as to availability of water along the trail? I’m told there are springs along way, curious as to how frequently I’ll be able to collect and filter water.
To be honest with you there are no significant water sources that I know of going to Charleston Peak either North or South Loop. If there's something off Trail I don't know about then that's a possibility but I have never seen anything.

I have a question. How dangerous is this hike to the summit. I have issues with a foot wide path on a slope or path on a narrow ridge. Thank you for your time. Earl
Oh so you don't like heights or expose is what you're saying Yeah there are certain spots that are like that but not the whole way through.
Obviously passable, so not bad though right. I just don't the edge or slopes , up or down a slope is different then walking along a slope. Thanks for your help.
At 3:25 did you say there was a campground area? I'm planning to spend the night on the mountain next weekend and wondering the best place to do that and if I should bring a hammock or tarp.
Yes, there's a campground area that is pretty high up the trail. I know it's a lot colder up there this time of year then when I went. I'm not sure if there's even snow up there right now or not. I live in Las Vegas, so I did this as a day hike, and I didn't camp out anywhere. I have never camped out at Mt Charleston, so I'm pretty clueless myself on the best way to do it there, unfortunately. I wish I could be of more help with this question. But I do really appreciate you checking out this video. Thank you.

How long did it take you to get to the top? How long round trip?
I don't remember how long it took me to get to the top but I do remember the whole thing took me about 12 and a half hours. I know people who do the hike a lot faster but this hike really kicked my butt. My best advice would be start at Sunrise that way you have plenty of daylight on the way down but still bring a headlamp just in case.

Oh man 17 miles is a long hike. How long did it take you?
I'm going to be honest with you it took me about 12 hours to do this entire hike. It's not only a lot of miles it's a lot of elevation gain and steep incline.

Folks please train for this hike. I have gotten altitude sickness from it. And don’t try to keep pace with the locals. They live at 7000 feet and gave way more oxygen in their blood.
