- A Harlem mom says she can't buy groceries because her food assistance benefits were stolen. It's a card-skimming scam that's targeted tens of thousands of New Yorkers. CBS New York investigative reporter Mahsa Saeidi has learned a simple tech upgrade could prevent much of this agony.

I went through that last year. It was from a 7 eleven in my neighborhood. I never use it at any 7 eleven after that.
It happened to me last year, and the purchase essentially on Florida at a Sam’s Club. Social workers recommended to change the pin every month, which is crazy too.
Don't use SNAP/EBT cards at stores that are owned and operated by foreigners.
Impossible in NYC. The chinese & Latinos run the supermarkets. The Arabs & Latinos run the delis

Seriously, all this technology that was promoted as being safer has resulted in more thefts than when people had foodstamp books...my bank account was never robbed until my bank switched to the chipped cards.

I figured it must be an inside job, snap card isn’t cash, it’s for food only… what’s a fraudster going to do with 10k in grocery snap cards ? I would guess charge a bodega 50% of the value to take them.
Although seems very easily traceable if stores are receiving abnormal amounts of snap payments

The tech upgrade does not work. My food stamps was stolen in the month of April and then my food stamps was just stolen June 6 of 2024. The new technology does not work they’re lying and then on top of that. HRA doesn’t have any answers for these kidsthat don’t have any food and I’m working Parent this doesn’t make any sense

How does that woman get this EBT card? Many elderly are in dire need of money for food. Sounds like an inside job as this skimming is now happening each month. These are American tax dollars just disappearing by card skimmers. Why don't the EBT services beef up their security protocol, MAKE the cards contactless? Guess they don't care since it's the tax payer money being stolen.
It happen to me it was done while I was sleeping I fought and got my benefits back I was @ tha center every other day until I got FS back the only I knew I went shopping I found out I 21 cents left and I just have my stamps this happen in April in NYC
This happened to me just 9 days ago. They took the entire amount that was put on my card within a few hours of it being put on there. I check my card balance every 2-3 days so I reported it right away and got the funds back on it 5 days later. I only use it at Jewel and Dollar General by my house.

This skimming devices are done by a lot of the employees that work for some of these supermarkets and check cashing places, bodegas small supermarkets like CTown, food town. Also if the block people from punching in their card numbers .

Over 5 million people have had to go on government assistance since Biden took office. Juxtapose that with the Trump economy where over 8.5 million voluntarily took themselves off of govt benefits. This was done without Trump having to make any cuts or changes to eligibilty regarding who gets these benefits
The dollar was stronger and job market was so improved that people no longer felt the need to file for it

It is definitely not true that Trump did not make cuts or changes for who is eligible. His administration cut the budget for programs that helped families enroll or stay enrolled in services like CHIP/Medicare, which already faced a decrease in coverage (which led to an increase in uninsured Americans). Additionally, about 2-3 million immigrants refused to take the benefits they needed after Trump’s public charge rule, which meant any legal immigrant who took SNAP, housing, or Medicaid benefits could lose their eligibility to gain a green card and become a permanent resident. Even immigrants who weren’t eligible for green cards gave up benefits that their US born kids were eligible for because they were afraid of retaliation.

Yes: people who are living beyond their means, relying on the tax payer to subsidise their existence who are too dumb to spot a card skimming device, that would be the weakness in the system that you speak of.
