Lol... the Flood from Halo 2. Playing through when I was a kid, when suddenly I thought I was playing Half Life. Like, it was years before I learned there was no connection.
Great list! I loved Taz escape from mars as well and agree that it had a odd vibe to it while playing it when I was a child. Another one that comes to mind is the final area and boss of Contra hard corps for Sega Genesis. It featured human enemies mutating into hideous creatures that run towards you and the final boss who transforms into a grotesque version of himself with 2 heads with long necks. It was quite creepy and disturbing seeing that as an 11 year old haha
The first Luigi’s mansion game over gave me goosebumps every single time
Yeah, the hands in Tears of the Kingdom are legitimately the only time Ive been scared by a game lately. They just appear with no warning or context, turn the sky red, then take a lot of resources to destroy. Sure you can teleport, but that didn't occur to me the first time they appeared. Honestly, I think it would have been better if they disabled teleportation and you had to either fight them, flee via physical obstacles like paragliding long distances or use a speed potion.
One of the more interesting surprises in the game. They killed me the first couple times but after I won and then found out Phantom Ganon spawns, I was too excited.
Okay, so I'm not the only person who got scared of the fortune teller's background dancers...
Also, Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon is slept on, but Goemon's Great Adventure is comatosed on.
Would love to one day knock those two games out as a package. I feel my younger self didn’t fully appreciate them
All the Goemon games really deserve a collection released. Aside from only getting a handful of them in the West I would love to be able to play them now without resorting to less legal means. I remember a friend of mine renting the SNES game and adoring it despite him being lukewarm, still one of my favorite early SNES releases.

If error screens count, how about what Shining Force II does for a corrupted file? They actually programmed not only a message but a music change for it, meaning the boss music starts from out of nowhere on the file select screen and then all your progress is lost.
(And the normal file select screen is already oddly spooky to begin with.)
Fortunately I only played Ecco for 15 minutes before I got bored.

God the doom hands were traumatizing. I had literally *just* dropped down from the skies and started wandering for shrines. Right as I came over a hill, I saw the first shrine, and began to approach it. And then suddenly the skies darkened, the music picked up, and I heard terrifying screeching. I literally screamed because I genuinely had nothing, but here came this absolute terror to squeeze the life out of me. And naturally, because whistle sprinting was patched, I died rather swiftly. I went into TOTK fully blind and had no idea where/how they spawned, so in my terror, upon respawn, I went the COMPLETE OPPOSITE WAY
Gotta say that your opinion on Echo the Dolphin is pretty common, legit been playing games since 1988 when I was 4 and despite knowing multiple people who owned it not a single actually enjoyed it. I really thing the gaming press gave it a giant pass and hyped it up because it was an interesting concept with little in the way that was similar at the time. The story of how the devs came up with the concept is neat but honestly it's painful to play and I've disliked it since release.
1) there literally is a Gohma in TotK.
2) The scariest/creepiest moment in Twilight Princess is when they have that weird flashback thing without the eyes.

ooh, Zero! While not scary, I also find 0²'s boss fight interesting, with the empty background and blood coming from its eye accompanied by the sorta...eerie(?) music. And why does it have wings, a halo, and why does it smile? And it won't let you leave the boss fight. I've always liked the melancholic feeling of the Dark Matter Trilogy.
I think the Zelda series does 'slightly disturbing yet intriguing' really well - specifically Majora's Mask, of course.
When i was a little kid, i would be scared by the death screen from the snes Lion King game when you're playing as cub simba, it shows cub simba dizzy in a black screen, then he looks at you, smirks and falls dead. Anyone else had this experience as a child?
That game for Sega Genesis was one of the hardest games I’d play, and I think my cartridge was glitched because whenever I tried to roll enemies as Adult Simba, it would soft reset. That was a nightmare in itself

When I was little I could never get very far in Piglet’s Big Game because of this one stage where Tigger has to sneak into some place being guarded by those elephant people, whatever they were referred to as. This segment had Tigger in this dirt path in a forest at the dead of night as two elephant men patrol the path, walking up and down it. You have to sneakily follow behind them and hide in the trees whenever they turn around. I could never beat it, always got caught. It’s pretty early in the game so I never experienced the majority of the game. It was so hard to my kid self and also really scary and creepy back then. I’d like to find the game again and try it again now that I’m older so I can actually experience it and not just the beginning over and over. I think that would be pretty satisfying.
But yeah…. spooky stealth section in a game for like 8 year olds…. odd choice tbh.
Heffalumps. I haven’t played the game you’re talking about but the original Pooh cartoon that introduced Heffalumps in some nightmare Pooh is having, that scene was pretty scary in itself lol

You think Rayman 2 is scary? Check out Rayman 3's level, the Desert of the Knaaren. It is constant claustrophobic panic across gangs of invincible enemies who constantly mutter about ripping off your flesh.
