If you missed out on these comments this year, I’ll consider doing this segment again next October
Yaassss
I have a weird one. In Super Mario RPG, near the end, there's a treasure box with infinite coins. I kept getting this idea in my head of someone continuously hitting it for all eternity and never running out of coins, basically being trapped in an endless hell of eternal jumping. It's stupid, but it freaked me out as a kid.
And to add on to this, at the 2nd Phase of the Smithy fight where there are multiple Smithys in the background all in the true form too as to imply the Smithy you fight isn’t the only one and at some point there were multiple Smithys in production, not to mention Smithy’s seething at you for pushing him to that limit and also the multiple transformations of his head can be creepy and unsettling too like Magician/Sorcerer Head Smithy.
Hope he reads this and covers this in a part 2.
Sounds fake tbh
@@Vulpashey buddy... *Sips drink* did you just blow in from stupid town?
THERE'S WHAT-
😂
In DK64 the "GET OUT" voice combined with the timer that followed which insta-killed you if you didn't escape fast enough always freaked me out as a kid.
Tomb Raider demos for PSX where you would basically run around Lara's house but there was no one in it, so you were expecting enemies to show up at some point. Real proto backroom vibes from that one.
Tomb raider 2 demo on that one PlayStation demo disc with the random enemies and dogs in Italy will forever scar me. I was not ready for bad guys with guns and pipes in 3D
I always thought that the butler in Tomb Raider 2 was really creepy, following you around, seemingly appearing right behind you. So glad I found out that he can be locked in the freezer
Everyone talks about the mad piano, Big Boo’s Haunt, and Unagi for scary Mario 64 moments but I always found Dorrie from hazy maze cave to be super unnerving. The mission is called “swimming beast in the cavern” already pretty ominous. But then you work your way down there, and have to swim out and climb on top of a mysterious, out of place looking Nessie monster, who you can even swim *under* and she makes an awful yelp when you have to ground pound her back. It’s all just so… weird.
I can't think of many, but simply seeing Donkey Kong in Mario Kart DS always scared me, I used to have a deep fear of gorillas
My childhood scare is literally every giant octopus one I can name in particular is the Octopus's in Banjo-Tooie in Jolly Roger's Lagoon
Bowser's laugh from Mario 64 was proably the only thing I remenber that was scary from a non horror game.
None of us were ready for the switch to 3D and actual voice acting lol.
A couple 3DS ones I can think of off the top of my head, Mario & Luigi: Dream Team has this part near the beginning where you get on a conveyor-like machine during a tour of the island & your surrounded by darkness which always off-put me when I was younger. Then in Super Mario 3D Land I heard about this weird thing where during a Ghost House stage (I think it was World 3) if you wait at the flagpole without touching it for a minute or so a ghost appears behind a gate in the background, & then fades away after 10 seconds or so. I tried it & subsequently didn't sleep that night. Lastly, everything about that one circus stage in Kirby: Triple Deluxe, from the fake floor to the creepy enemies, that stage was enough for me to put the game down when I was younger & it took me a few years to finish it.
Edit: One more notable thing that I just remembered is in Dr. Mario Miracle Cure, still on 3DS, the weird models & animations of Mario & Luigi & the music from Luigi's stages always creeped me out. Not sure why the game looked so rough for Nintendo's standards, but it did & it doesn't matter because you can't buy it anymore since it never got a physical release.
My three biggest ones.
Dkc3: Squirt. His eyes! They never stopped following me! And I’d somehow completely forgotten that Ellie could snort up some water to attack, so I was just stuck hopping in circles while the eyes followed me every step of the way.
Mario sunshine: fighting Gooper Blooper. When you yank off one of his tentacles, it flails and writhes and spasms whilst making splatty sound effects. And I had no idea at the time it was an accurate portrayal of cephalopod limbs. Still unnerves me today and I have to leave them be.
Windwaker: the threat of the big octos. My cousin played the game before me and told me that whilst sailing, if I ever found a flock of seagulls, I’d be attacked by a giant squid. Being attacked by gigantic sea monsters has always been an irrational fear of mine, and I always sailed with bated breath. Nervously looking for the birds. Having mini heart attacks when a few would start flying behind me. When I finally ran into one, it wasn’t as bad as my imagination made it seem, but the anticipation. The anticipation!
Despite these examples, I’ve always loved mollusks of all kinds. A very ironic coincidence.
(Sorry for writing a writing a novelette)
So Ocarina of Time when link has to save the water princess as a child that monster who walked in a circle and you had to defeat him scared me so bad that I had nightmares.
Damn I hate that I missed the community post about this! The criminals creeping around in the original Carmen Sandiego on PC had me shook in the 90s!!
I played the upgraded version for Windows 95. I remember I guessed the wrong person when it was CARMEN SANDIEGO herself! Would love to see the logic in that game and how often she was the criminal
In Mega Man X, when you arrive at Sigma’s final fortress and climb the tower to reach the final boss. It petrified me as a kid because the area was so dark, lonely, and had the creepiest music in the whole game.
Sigma Fortress 3 in X1 probably has the creepiest music in all of Megaman X, it could fit right in Super Metroid like a glove, I’m surprised he didn’t mention Spore Spawn in Super Metroid my goodness was the music in that boss the creepiest of the creepy to little kid me, forget about Earthbound Giygas!
The lead up to final bosses could get a video of its own. This is a good one
Cool that mine was included. I was like 7 or 8 when i bumped into those egg quarter beetles so it took a long time to muster up the bravery to attempt the level again after that first scare lol
Anything chasing/hunting you down in a video game deserves to be analyzed 😂
The loading screen for World for One Alone in Pokepark 2 put a hole in 13 year old me's stomach.
Instead of Pikachu and his friends palling around. Just Pikachu alone... standing there... So eerie.
Seeing the Kilrathi show up in Wing Commander over your intercom to verbally assault you was an eerie experience at age 7. It was like a Signs moment, but instead of a gray, it was cunning monstrous cat that's better at war than humans are. Also Earthbound, which had a disturbing vibe throughout most of the game. Nothing beats Ocarina of Time though.
The opening cutscene from Tekken 3 scared the living shirt out of me, I could never play it alone as a kid. Also, any cutscene or battle taking place in Ogre's or True Ogre's levels.
I have this theory that kids were not mentally ready for the switch to 3D and the audio that came with discs/upgraded cartridges
The opening for Portal 2, with the Valve logo. Dreadful music plays with the image of a man facing away from you, a valve handle attached to the back of his head. The image stutters as he starts to turn his head, but you don't see his face. I remember looking away and muting the TV every time I loaded up the game, in fear that this time, he might actually turn and look at you.
I don't know if anyone else would count this as a childhood experience, but I definitely wasnt expecting to see that.
One that got me when I was younger was the corpse in the bathtub in Eternal Darkness. I had already been well acclimated to horror by then, and I loved scary movies and games, but there was something about how suddenly and unexpectedly that scene happened that it's one of the few times I can honestly say a jump scare got me.
Eternal Darkness is one of those games that comes once a lifetime it seems. Surprised no one else has managed to mess with the player as much as this game
I still remember playing Zelda's lullaby at the royal families gravestone. The lightning and the spooky camera play and then all the sudden the lightning bolt.
deleteing your save data in tomodachi life and your mii keeps asking you if you're sure, even saying "please don't",,,,, and when you finally delete it your mii fades away saying "nooo!!! i hope we meet again some day!"
i just wanted to start fresh but it filled my kid self with so much regret :( i teared up and didnt have the heart to keep up with my new game
Some non-horror game moments not mentioned here that freaked me out as a kid:
-In Mario 64, seeing the Peach portrait change into Bowser before falling through the Bowser in the Dark World trap door scared me the first time it happened. I remember having bad dreams about it.
-Also in Mario 64, the giant fish in Tiny Huge Island.
-In Yoshi's Island, Bowser getting far too close during the final battle
-As a little kid, the ghost houses in Super Mario World scared me. I had to get my older sisters to play though those for me.
Gi Nattack's face in FF7. Super creepy and always scared me as a kid. Especially the shifting face leading into the boss fight
Get Out is definitively one of my top ones so I’m happy to see it!
Another one that made me stop playing the game was the zombie bug world of Jet Force Gemini. Them being complete bullet sponges really made little me feel a helpless sense of dread.
Jet Force Gemini I remember playing at Best Buy for like an hour and I had no clue how to progress. That was infuriating in itself. But the bugs definitely struck a chord with me. Good suggestion!
Night of The Werehog or when Sonic becomes The Werehog the first time is pretty scary
Not Amy's Mirror Room. Anything, but that 😱
Earthbound Beginnings Giegue/Giygas Fight: The music
That’s all that needs to be said, other final boss music be damed, but you could also factor in the stuff Giygas says to Ninten while attacking inexplicably to the point he’ll kill Ana or Lloyd in 1, 2 or 3 hits. Also sound Giygas makes right before he attacks adds to the tension.
Earthbound Beginnings and it’s sequels have more creepy moments I’d love to see get covered but I felt Beginnings doesn’t get enough love.
Nightmare Rift from U.B. Funkeys.
Seeing the flesh zone for the first time was the creepiest thing 7 year old me ever saw.
Also the music alone kept me way from the game for months.
When the green maid in super paper mario turns into a spider 💀
As someone who can't stand spiders (especially daddy long-legs), that moment did hugely creep me the fuck out.
Arachnophobia
I have more spiders for you next video 😂
@@TheMentok Oh joy 🙄
the fight with robot patrick in the original spongebob battle for bikini bottom scared me so much, the atmosphere was so creepy
For Super Mario 64, I didn't even touch Big Boo's Haunt as a kid (we didn't own an N64 at the time so my first exposure to the game was by playing on our cousin's copy of the game). When I went through the 8-star door in the foyer of Peach's Castle, I saw the portrait of peach slowly transform into Bowser (this is the entrance to the Bowser in the Dark World stage). Seeing that picture of Bowser and his terrifying, hellish gaze really spooked me out of going through that corridor at the time (and still unnerves me to this day). The DS remake deflates this scary moment as it's just a picture of the modern Bowser we all know and laugh at.
The ending to the Dos platformer Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure. The last level is an almost bottomless pit with spikes on the walls that you can not escape from. Your only option is to helplessly fall. As you fall the spiked walls get narrower and narrower. When you reach the bottom you fall into the mouth of a giant alien lizard. The game ends on a full screen illustration of Cosmo's feet dangling above the horrifying creatures gaping maw, saying to be continued in episode 2. As a kid, I didn't realize the other episodes were out and you had to order them from the company, so for years I thought that was just how it ended. Even now thinking about that level with it's haunting music and surreal background art, I get chills.
Great list bro! One that comes to my mind is the giant catfish in one of the first levels in Ape Escape for PS1. You couldn't defeat it and it was quite the intimidating obstacle even for 12-13 year old me at the time haha
IDK about anyone else, but that giant polar bear that chases you in 'Crash Bandicoot 2' always gave me anxiety. Also, the cut-scene in 'TombRaider 2' where the Kali statue comes to life is STILL a little creepy to me.
My embarrassing childhood scare is when the Gamecube was starting up as usual with the cute happy cube and the happy sounds as it bounces around... but then out of nowhere it goes to the menu screen instead of just playing the game. The cube logo itself gets warped out of shape as it spins faster and faster as that horrible sound plays..... It scared me every time.
Oh and also the level in Wind Waker when you have to sneak past the guards while hiding under a barrel. Little kid me was not a good sneaker and the sudden cut of the screen when I failed scared me so much I had to stop playing for a while.
Ecco the Dolphin
This game is literally one of the main reasons next to almost drowning irl that I have thassalaphobia. You just start out as a dolphin with his family, just hanging out, and one asks how high you can jump, you do it and the most horifying aounding and seizuring endusing thing happens, then you're all alone and the ost lets you know that. And it doesnt let up as you have to go deeper and deeper, with ecco screeching everytime he's hit and guess what, ypure a dolphin so you need air!
Wait.
Is Conker's ending a reference to A Clockwork Orange?
The monolouge and the 'Kubrick Stare' really make me think that's what the were going for.
I'm surprised the Sammer Kingdom in Super Paper Mario getting consumed by the void didn't get a mention but Mimi did
Did a full segment on that in a past video so didn’t cover it here
I remember getting so much anxiety over the wampas in that Star Wars game for the N64 (shadows of the empire, was it called?) that I’d hide behind the couch. They would follow after you until you found a door to close behind you, and of course if the caught you it was murder time. Also the level where you’re in the sewer pipes and you have to face off against a giant kraken thing in the murky water.
…Also SA-X chasing Samus in Metroid Fusion.
Also, Yes to all of the these that you mention here haha. Aside from the bottom of the well in Ocarina of Time and all the stuff you mentioned, I was terrified of the giant sucker squid thing that you have to fight in Jaba’s belly after it takes the princess away….and Bongo Bongo in the shadow temple.
the eel from mario 64...that scared the shit out of me
For me is Majora's Mask, the actual Mask
Those eyes, i couldn't play the game or even see the mask to it's eyes until i was a grown up, avoiding any video related to it. I remember when i played the melee mission where you had to fight on the mask, was the worst game related jumpscare in my childhood.
I’m in the middle of Metroid dread and I agree emis and sas are creepy especially when You need to run away from them or
Hide or find a way to fight back
Ten years from now we're going to get videos like this with comments like "the Fecto Forgo boss" from the people who played Forgotten Land when they were five
Definitely, shit hits different when you’re a kid lol.
You know why the whole Zelda OOT game is unsettling, its because its what birth the n64 asthetic horror genre
The Tropes that made unsettling moments in zelda n64 games is why the n64 style is commonly used for horror genres
Theres also ps1 style horror games but N64 style really hit the mark
“The Oregon Trail” 😂😂
That game was so upsetting! Like why does my “family” have to die. 😫😤😅😂
Donkey Kong and Sonic Adventure 2 was the hardest and scariest games to beat as a kid. 😅
Majin sonic screen reminds me of those creepy late night adult swim bumpers.
Never looked at it that way
I love how I've been watching a several hour iceberg about creepy pasta rituals (the elevator game being on there) and now this video brings up the elevator game...
I literally heard about the game the day before watching this video!
I would've said the Silent Realm from Skyward Sword. That place terrifed me as a kid
speaking of super paper mario, sammer's kingdom after being destroyed is also extremely creepy
Silent hill two, the triangle head guy. So scary 😱
My dawg pyramid head
Mickeys magic mirror had so many, mickey can die many different ways, a giant evil rubber duck chases you down and THE JUMPSCARES christ im the only person who remembers this game and it was so traumatic
The Kid Chameleon one gets better: The official name for the wall is the MURDER WALL
Yeah they missed a big opportunity with dead hand, but the gloom hands were actually very nerve wrecking
Funnily enough, for the Sonic CD screen, “Majin” is supposed to be the nickname of one of the devs and that’s his distorted face edited onto Sonic. But between the old pixelated graphics, language and culture differences, and most people having no way of knowing that it’s pretty hard to tell.
Also note how the room Dead Hand is in is just… entirely made up of skulls.
And I’d never made that connection with the X and Y ghost, interesting. Very likely it is inspired by that, at least in part. Especially given how you find her in a hotel later and she says to be quiet so she can hear the elevator. Pokémon has an interesting history of ghost girls. The one that really gets me, though, is the Sword and Shield one. It’s not so much scary as just… very… real. Little girl got sick and died and was never able to give her friend her message of making amends after an argument they had shortly before that friend had to move away. He doesn’t even know she died of her illness and asks you how she is when you deliver the letter. (Also there’s a kid in the same house that’s just staring at the wall and tells you not to interrupt her conversation if you try to talk to her).
The very first game I played was Rayman DS. And I didn't finish the game until I was 14 because there were so many scary parts (I'm talking about you Caves of Bad Dreams)
I used to turn on dreamcast sonic adventure just for the music lmao
6:09 that isn't a "ghost girl"...if you visit the battle chalet (or whatever it's called, I think that's where it is) you see a girl sleeping in a bed who mutters something about searching for someone & she's most obviously a "Psychic Trainer" who's projecting her astral self in order to *find* what/who she's looking for; it's always bugged me that no one ever makes this connection 🙄
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - The history of Hyrule sequence.
That is all.
Thanks a lot now I'm not sleeping tonight
The things I'm watching are scary and I still finished the video, please help me😢 mentok why WHY!!!
When in totk phantom ganon’s hand spawn out of nowhere that still terrifies me
It’s the original Luigi’s mansion ‘game over’ for me.
I know you mentioned ReDeads from Ocarina of Time but my God ReDeads in Wind Waker are way worse, specialy if you consider how colorful the game is
oh my god, i forgot about that pokepark 2 scene. absolutely dread-inducing. i gotta play that game again
...also, people were scared of mario party 8 mario???
Yup... I was a sensitive kid back then, and anything loud scared me to death. I also was experiencing separation anxiety... So...😅
@@matthewwilliams5447 actually, you know what? that's very fair. i also am far more easily scared when dealing with separation anxiety.
The Pokepark 2 moment made me sad
No no, you turn the volume UP before the Sonic Adventure menu music
i was really scared of the robot lobster from kirby super star when he chasses you
This is an extremley dumb one, but the og candy crush level fail screen. The girl scared me.
The disturbing moments from my childhood games comprise of Lanayru's Vision from Zelda Twilight Princess, The Trail of Blood from FFVII, Squall's hallucinations towards the end of FFVIII(thank god Rinoa saved him and returned to the present), that fucking shark at the shipwreck in Atlantica from KH1, the laugh of Vanitas from KHBBS(omfg didn't Haley Joel Osment coin that so good in English), Terror Time from Yo-Kai Watch, the Weeping Angels from LEGO Dimensions' Doctor Who level, and Chain Chomp and Unagi the Eel from Super Mario 64.
I will list disturbing moments from non-horror games that don't technically count as 'childhood games', even though I've played some of them at 18. But that still makes me a kid, so yeah.
I remember i one time my grandma offered me super paper mario as a gift but i didnt accept i wish i could get it then but all i know is that i would have been traumatized
The cyclops cloud from Kirby games.
20:02. I'M IN A CZcams VIDEO!!!!🎉🎉😂 WHAT?! I AM SPEECHLESS! DUDE, I JUST CAN'T! On CZcams at 11PM while finishing my schoolwork from last week and THIS HAPPENS! Life is something alright....
Edit: I mean... Phobia in how you're remembered is possibly thing...
I could definitely say raised eyebrows but not scared.
IMAGINE IF YOU HAD TO FIGHT SAX BEFORE FIGHTING THE FINAL BOSS IN METROID DREAD
Everything in Body Harvest.
YES POKEPARK 2 MENTION
Wet dry world,Luigi hanging shadow and the forest of fear wario land 3 also zero from Kirby’s dreamland 3
Edit:the peaceful village at night
Luigi's Manson gave me nightmares >_>
Another confession:
The lochness monster npc in mario used to terrify me Dx
Sesame Street ABC - 123 on the NES. Game: Astro Grover Adding Countdown. Play it. Don't speed it up. Imagine yourself 3 years old, learning how to do math. Get a couple answers right (you're a big boy, I know you can do it), then get one wrong. 💀
14:48 like the area you fight it in
3:12 Funi
Vanessa, Hat in time
Modern day parents get horrified about game moments like this. And I’m like- “Dude, I grew up in this stuff. Being a kid WAS scary.” XD
I triggerd the Marx glicht and i have trauma
Celes attempting suicide in ff3 ( snes or 6 in japan).
An ass ripping adventure
i hate that uncharted level
Wish Pokemon would go back to the feel of the first 2 gens and add a difficulty slider.
I dunno. None of those examples unnerved me when I was younger. Then again, I'm older than most of the demographic that watched this, so I was already much older when some of these examples came out. I don't think I ever played a game that gave me anxiety until Resident Evil. All of the 'innocent games" never scared me. This whole list is subjective so I'm not knocking anyone who got freaked out over those moments. Now if we were talking about childhood television shows, or movies, then I have an entire list. Not so much with video games sadly.
So I was never scared by video games as a kid. Partially because I wasn't a pussy, but also because I saw some fucked up shit in movies and so games were never that scary by comparison.
Sorry I didn't like it I'm just 11 and didn't know it's this scary please accept my apology
Conkers bad fur day was my coming of age video game lol i was way too young
I really need to replay that game.
@@TheMentok make sure its on a N64 on old ass tv with a liter of mountain dew for full effect 😂
Lots of autistic subhuman getting scared of baby games, I don't care if you were 7, that's just fucking sad.
"Waaaaah, Mario's determination made me SCARED, mummy, feed me into the hugbox, I'm so emotionally stunted I interpret things in the most base, animalistic ways, I'm scuuuuurred", lmfao
Can't say I ever got spooked by games, generally I find western media horror asinine, but some of that shit is fun to watch, like hellraiser and shit.
Guess some people are just pussies and need to stay on the titty to feel safe, lol. Some people must have awful boring lives
