    We were driving home to Tehachapi from San Diego from my grandmother's funeral and were in Mojave when this happened. We stayed in traffic for a while, then made a U-turn and went to Rosamond to try and take Tehachapi Willow Springs Road. Talked to a few folks at a gas station, and decided it would be safer to just get a hotel and wait it out. All the hotels in Lancaster/Palmdale and the surrounding area were filled, so we ended up having to drive to LA to find a hotel. Definitely an emotional roller coaster of a week. I just thank the Lord we didn't get there sooner and get stuck in that mud.

    I’m very familiar with this highway 58 between Mojave’s and tehachapi, ca. I’ve been reading a lot of these comments and just for your information:
    1) there’s no way to drive up the hill in a hummer, truck, suv, etc because there’s a drop on the other side of that ledge
    2) the edge or hill is sopping in water that given any type of vehicle and attempting to go up will get stuck in thick clay mud and if you were to make it, you’d be dropping down into a small canyon or steep hill, no flat out after that.
    3) during this rainy time, there was construction that only allowed for a one lane and driving 45 mph.
    4) I believe that due to the heavy rain, there were also mud slides either before and after the filming of this vid, that trapped a significant amount of vehicles and made it impossible to drive out. These vehicles were stuck in place for hours and hours.
    5) I was one of the few vehicles that made it out of that canyon part of hwy 58 before the rains really came down. When I got to Victorville, ca, I had heard that many vehicles’ engines had flooded as parts of the hwy were deeper than others parts. I can’t imagine having to stay in one place for hours at a time and hoping that the rains don’t drop a deluge. Remember, you’re going up in elevation so I’m sure the vehicles down the hwy were in even more in danger.
    It was a dangerous day.
    Thanks for the vid. It gave me a different perspective from a higher vantage point. I can only imagine what that vehicle in the front must have been feeling.

      I recognize this because I was stuck on this same freeway all night. Over a hundred vehicles stuck in this mess at five o'clock rush hour. It looks like just water, but it was mud that you could walk on a short time later. It had the interstate closed for many days after this for the road crews to remove all the vehicles and the mud.

      Its not a poor design its better than having both sides filled with water and the watter will find a ditch to settle in.

    • @melissasueh.
      @melissasueh. Před 5 lety +22

      Highway 58 was once a 2 lane road that fit the valley very well with deep drains on both sides. Then the California traffic became too much for 2 lanes and they rebuilt it into 4 lanes with the center divider to keep people from crashing into each other. There was no room for ditches, so they put drain pipes along the sides with screens to keep logs and rocks out of the pipe. In a flash flood, the brush and rocks block up the screens and the water can't get off the road into the pipes. Fortunately, floods like this only happen once or twice a year.

  • @nemo227
    @nemo227 Před 6 lety +21

    It appears that the concrete divider does an almost perfect job of channeling the water into one side of the highway, making the situation much worse than necessary. It solves the problem of head-on collisions and creates a new & different problem.

    This is a remarkable video and it's too bad it's titled only with numbers, making it impossible to find in a search on this event. It's also remarkable how fast all this happens; the water is up and then down in just minutes. I'm surprised that more drivers didn't follow the lead of the people at the beginning who had the presence of mind to get the hell out of there and drive back in the wrong direction; most other vehicles just sit there and get stuck.

  • @happyunicorn3417
    @happyunicorn3417 Před 5 lety +3

    Everybody trying to blame the roadway design should think about a few things. This is a mountain pass, a.k.a. a low path between hills, which water prefers for the same reason you do (gravity). The road is at the bottom of what has always been a potential river valley, probably because horses and humans years ago found that to be the easiest route. But back then, if the water ever came up, a horse or human could just go sideways up the hill a bit and keep going, instead of sitting helpless like these modern pod-people from the Matrix.
    Secondly horizontal space next to the roadway is at a premium in this kind of steep terrain. Space where you might be inclined to add another lane to satisfy your fired-up constituency who insist on driving through here by the millions. Space where you might instead want to add a ditch for surface water runoff. You either have to cut sideways into the hill or raise the road bed and/or bury pipes, any of which adds millions to the cost and requires lengthy road closures.
    Looks like in this case the political clout of millions of people who insist on driving won out, and they added the extra lanes but not the ditches (can't really tell though). With or without a ditch, adding lanes will inevitably (because it's literally the goal), increase the surface area of pavement (water no likey, water run offy) and decrease the amount of exposed soil and vegetation that would otherwise have slowed the water down and/or given it a chance to soak into the ground. Which makes flooding "flashier" and worse.
    Anyway it's a desert, right? It'll never rain super-much here. Well, probably back in the day that used to be true, but now it's not, because the climate has changed, which is partly because of those same people who insist on driving everywhere constantly. Are engineers supposed to design infinite roads with infinite capacity for infinite numbers of cars AND design infinite drainage for infinitely bigger and more frequent flash-floods caused by the same cars? No, I'm sorry, fuck me very much, there are limits.
    PS the K-rails/jersey barriers on the left are there for the same reason we put helmets on some kids: To keep 'em from hurting themselves.

    • @spikespa5208
      @spikespa5208 Před 5 lety

      The road is not at the bottom of the valley, it's up on the side. Cache Creek is to the left in this view, down lower. The flood came out of a side ravine up the road a ways. One that rarely has much water in it. There was an unusual cloudburst a little way up the hills to the right.

    I answered my own question; part of your video made the following newscast; apparently, a 10 mile stretch of Hwy 58 was shut down ffor SEVERAL DAYS! due to this flood of mud and debris brought about by desert, torrential rains. The state of the freeway and the cars were a lot worse behind you with debris covering some of their hoods. It must have been very scary. You were probably there all night long and into the next day until they rescued you, if you took the rescue. Your rig looked very comfortable. Here's the newscast: abc7.com/weather/10-mile-stretch-of-cars-stuck-on-sr-58-in-tehachapi/1036201/
