Mouse wheel forward and back zooms in and out in both Bambu Studio and Prusaslicer while using the paint tools. At least, that is the default behavior on my pc.
That's the missing piece! Using a laptop without a mouse. I'll plug in my new Bambu mouse and give it another go. Thanks so much!
I had success painting the model, by simplying the model slightly.
That was in Prusaslicer? Thanks!
@@tada3dprinting Yes, I have posted a link to my 3MF file. But the spam-filter ate it. It is at printables / 694603-melting-snowman
To zoom in and out while in paint program use the center wheel
Thank you. Working on a laptop without my mouse. I'll plug that in. Thanks!
I gave the model a go, because from your tries I had a hunch what's wrong with it. But ultimately the bottom gave it away. The model wasn't correctly sculpted for 3d printing or maybe it was extracted from a game or something, but without fixing the mesh. The slicer will close a few missing triangles and you won't see a hole in your print, but for painting the different materials/colors onto the surface of the model, the slicer can only go by the triangles defined in the STL. Smart fill checks at which angle the surface of the triangle you click on are to the adjacent triangles surfaces and if that angle is below the value you selected, the adjacent triangle gets filled as well. (You can compare that to a bucket fill where you specify the similarity threshold of adjacent pixels to fill.)
Now if there is a triangle missing in the STL, smart fill can only assume, that if there was one (because for a printable model there _has_ to be one), it is at an angle of zero, which is below the threshold. That means it get filled and all triangles adjacent to that "imagined" triangle are checked for the smart fill angle. The "body" you are trying to fill hence has a leak.
You can often fix that pretty easily, using the "fix by Windows repair algorithm" and if that doesn't help, try "simplify model" (keeping the highest amount of detail= followed by "fix by Windows repair algorithm". Playing around with the smart fill angle often let's you paint rather difficult parts pf a model, where it seems impossible at first glance. Along with the mouse zoom that should make your life a bit easier.
Since I was already playing around with the model, I uploaded a 4 color fixed version to Prusas printables, my first upload btw, named "Melting Snowman Coaster 4 Color REMIX". I added a puddle of water, just to demonstrate how fine the smart fill layer can be tuned and because melting snow should leave a puddle.😉
OK thanks so much!
You can split the model in parts while stay in their place.
OK thank you
Intresting that Bumbu Slicer is better at color fill. But Prusa Slicer is batter at cutting the model (it shows the outline of the cut).
It may just be the way I'm using it. Thank you!
I also had the same problems you did, and thought that maybe the areas were too small for the smart fill. I zoomed it up to 350% and was able to color the eyes, but had trouble with the buttons, then zoomed just the Z to 600 percent. This allowed me to color all of the area. I zoomed back to 100% and it is still colored. I could send you the 3MF file
OK so it was a zooming thing. Thanks so much!
The fact that the "P" in the top toolbar is white and not gray means that the STL has more than one body. It might not be what you want, but until you click it, you'll never know. When I want to print something multi-color, I ALWAYS look for that option and check the results. If I don't like it, I can always undo it. I'd bet money that the eyes and buttons are separate bodies, just based on what I saw in your video.
Thanks for sharing that. It actually still smears weird on the eyes but I'll definitely use that in the future. Thanks!
I added a 5-tool XL to my Prusa slicer and had a go at this. I set the layer height to 0.2mm with a 0.4mm nozzle. First I sliced 0.4mm off of the bottom of the snowman. Then on to painting. I found that for the smart brush to work I had to be zoomed in almost all of the way for the head and the eyes. I used the mouse wheel to zoom in. It took two steps for me to get the object to paint. First just move the mouse around until you see some parts change color slightly. Click the mouse button to paint. Only some fractals were painted. Now slowly move the mouse around until most of the object has changed color slightly. Click the mouse button and the rest of the object will be painted. I had to do that for the eyes and the head. The buttons and top hat were easier, a click on the top surface and a click on the edge. Cheers.
I also tried painting this in Bambu Studio and it behaves the same way that Prusa slicer does.
Did you start with white or black? Did you happen to save the 3mf file that you could email to me? Thanks for trying this out. I'll look at it again.
@@tada3dprinting I actually started with the default which was orange. The white flat part was simple, the head was next, and that was the two-step process I detailed. I did the black next, two-step for each eye and top and sides for hat, hat brim, and buttons. The nose was already orange, but I changed the shade. Not as sure if that worked or not, but if it is a problem, the two-step process that was used on the eyes should work.
I sent you a 3mf file from Prusa slicer for the 5-tool XL @ 300%. I think you should be able to print that.
How about using the modifier sphere in the slicer (I think there is a sphere) and put it over the eye and color that.
Ok I'll check it out. Thank you!
Yeah
Use bamboo slice or orca slicer
What's bamboo slicer? Did you mean Bambu Labs? That's what she used.
I've ordered my very first printer, the A1 with 256mm cubed build volume.
I ordered it Christmas Eve as a gift to myself. Also ordered the 3 nozzle pack along with 8 rolls of Bambu PLA BASIC and MATTE in various colors. Four rolls are with reusable spools and the other four are as refills. The discount we get on their filament when also purchasing a printer I'd really nice.
When it arrives i don't plan to update firmware unless i have issues. The A1 series doesn't have a way to rollback to earlier firmware so i want to be super careful when i update.
TADA, which online forums or community support groups do you recommend visiting for bambu topics or issues? I signed up to the Bambu Discord, but sometimes also i see are very vocal and negative postings. 😅 But if anything good came from that is that i learned NOT to immediately update as soon as a firmware comes out.
For example, many in the bambu A1 discord are saying that the December 22 A1 firmware release has negatively affected the Z offset when printing with PETG, but others are saying the update helps their Z offset for PLA.
anyways I'm super excited for when my printer arrives. I'm going to get my wooden workshop desk out of storage to use for the printer.
Eventually I'll learn to print PETG and TPU but going to learn the ropes with PLA first.
Sure do appreciate your channel 🎉😊
Oh that's so cool! I chose not to get the A1 because I am happy with my X1 and just don't want to deal with another profile to slice. But I would imagine it being the big brother to the A1 Mini, you'll be very happy with it. Did it give you an idea when you'll get it?
I was not aware of the firmware thing but I haven't had any requests to update the Mini, just the X1. I haven't updated just because I don't like change. Haha
I am in the Facebook group "Bambu Lab 3D Printers Users Group". I like to browse what people are printing and have learned some things.
My husband just got an X1 and he prints mostly PETG. We haven't noticed any difference in printing. They both seem easy to use. I haven't had the need to print TPU yet but I should try it. Let .e know what you think! Thanks!
You could have just moved the model down so the part that you don't want to print is under the plate, it is easier than splitting the model.
Oh that's true. Thanks
Why do you use two different slicers? Just use Bambu or Orca and leave PS alone for good.
BambuStudio and Orca basing on PS after all.
Because I wanted to print it on a Prusa to compare. Thanks !
Bambu beats Prusa again at fraction of the cost.
Not really it is just a bump in the road. I have both and am far more impressed with the XL, of course it was more expensive.
what is far more impressive about it?@@woodwaker1
