    Wow, I actually remember watching this when it aired on TV as a kid. A fond memory along such great 90's made-for-TV movies like that one where Paul Reiser is being targeted by his office's security AI system. Or the one about killer bees that starts with a caption, "This WILL BE a true story."

    The fact this movie came out not just the same year as Groundhog's Day but literally months apart tells you everything about why it's so poorly remembered. It's surprising how often that happens. It's really sad when both are good or even the one that's forgotten is better in this case though no huge loss.

    Out of the 2 versions, the short film with Kurtwood Smith looks more interesting to me, and I like that it ends on a darkly ambiguous note. Also, while it would be interesting, I feel like if someone made a 12:01 theatrical adaptation it'll will unfairly compared to Groundhog Day.

    Having seen the anime adaptation of ‘The Girl Who Lept Through Time’, I wouldn’t classify that one as a ‘time loop’, since there’s some control over where and when they go. But I guess maybe the live action film is much different, they’re both based on the same book so I don’t even know if either are accurate adaptations at all.

    • @johnnyd3158
      @johnnyd3158 Před 2 lety +8

      The anime adaptation was actually a loose sequel to the original book that the film was based on as the main female protagonist of the anime film is supposed to be the niece of the main female protagonist of the original story.

    What a fantastic review! "It's kind of silly," is one of those lines Phelous could say endlessly. It's sad, if I was in a time loop, I'd still be watching these videos, but it would only ever count as one view. That's very unfair to such a great content creator! Although, if a new video dropped, I could use it to convince someone I was in the loop. "Now Phelous is going to point out how this character is a jackass, here he makes light of how stupid this whole situation is, and this is where Wabuu makes an unexpected appearance to make fun of him for even watching the movie...."
    Hey, Phelous, if you read this, I wanted to let you know that this is the guy who has compared you to an alchemist in the past, and I recently made and uploaded a horror film essay video. It's a start, more for fun than anything, so I'm not encouraging you to watch it. But I do feel like I should let you know that at the end I thank you along with a small handful of other creators for being inspirations. If you're mentioned somewhere, you deserve to know about it. What it took to make my even very rudimentary video shows how amazing your work really is and I doubt my production value will ever even remotely approach yours.

    Happy that Phelan gives Kurtwood Smith his due. Most people know him as Red from "That '70s Show," real ones know him as Clarence Boddicker from "Robocop," but he's so goddamn good in everything he's in. Just one of those actors incapable of not giving 100%, even in crap.
    And there's very little barb wire deathmatch action in this movie, considering it prominently features Moxley.

My mother would always say that Groundhog Day took the time loop idea from Mirror for a Hero (Зеркало для Героя) a Soviet 1987 movie based on a 1983 short story of the same name. The whole movie is on CZcams, so easily accessible. Not sure about subs for it tho.

It's Russian and seems to be quite good , winning several prestigious nominees and prizes.

    I don't think it is a time loop in the "conventional" sense, but arguably the myth of Prometheus could have inspired some time loop stories; while time itself isn't repeating, he is undergoing the same day over and over. Same with Sisyphus. Greek gods, and gods in general, are pretty twisted...
    Anyway, excellent review as usual. I liked the bonus concise review of the Kurtwood Smith version at the start, too.

    I was born at 12:01 AM. To think, if I had been born two minutes earlier. . .nothing of consequence would’ve happened.

    My fav time loop story was a short segment in Buffy Season 6, when a customer comes into Giles' store asking for a mummy hand, and the nerds outside put her into a time loop. It's short, doesn't fill the whole episode, but it still cracks me up. 😂🤣

    I like the hour loop concept. Is far worse trap than a day. Since only so much can do in an hour. Like travel & find stuff not seen yet.

    Have you seen ‘Palm Springs’ or ‘Boss Level’? Both good time loop movies that I think provide an interesting twist on the concept.
