    The irony is: He says he's the only one who can change anything but in fact, he can't! All his changes are also only temporary and will last for at most an hour. The only difference is that he's the only one who knows that these changes ever happened but effectively, he changed nothing. He is caught in a repeating loop like everyone else is, but only for him this loop is a problem as he's the only one being aware of it. This also shows another important fact: Some problems are only problems once you are aware of them, as long as you didn't know about it, they didn't bother you either. That's the meaning of "Ignorance is bliss".

    Incredible to be able watch this--thank you so much for uploading it.
    Some of the commenters have noted strong similarities between 12:01 and Groundhog Day. In fact, Jonathan Heap (director) and Richard Lupoff (writer) considered Groundhog Day an act of plagiarism and attempted to take action, but found that they had neither the resources nor the allies for a successful lawsuit.
    Also, a couple odd bits of trivia. Two of the most notable time-loop movies starred cast members of That 70s Show: Kurtwood Smith (here) and Ashton Kutcher (Butterfly Effect). Kurtwood Smith also played a time-manipulating starship captain in Star Trek: Voyager--a nod, no doubt, to his role in 12:01.

    I am fascinated by Kurtwood Smith and his ability to be so convincing as a villain (Robocop), mean/clueless dad (That 70's Show, Dead Poet's Society, The Crush), and this sort-of nebbish guy when all reports are that he is very down-to-earth and easy-going. BUT....
    I am older than dust, but before Groundhog Day, et. al. was a 1961 episode of The Twilight Zone titled "Shadow Play" in which Dennis Weaver plays a man that is to be executed who repeatedly relives the day with the same people but they shift from character to character (cop, judge, priest). He tries to convince them not to execute him and [SPOILER ALERT, but hey, it's 58 years ago] doesn't quite succeed. I loved Groundhog Day, but "time-loop" wasn't invented in 1993....

    I had never heard of this until today, and even though I've seen and read variations of this time-loop concept over the past decades, this has got to be one of the best. Delving into the psychological ramifications of some fantastical or "magical" plot mechanism (and time travel is certainly way up there in terms of improbable) is often more interesting than the mechanism itself. It reminds me on one level of the short story by Larry Niven called "All The Myriad Ways".

      Modestas Malakauskas I thought about it. If this were ever possible, which it's certainly not :), then your brain wouldn't be able to process all those memories that you've built up. Even though your body is not aging, your mind is still building up the memories, so you'd have the amount of memories of a 900-year-old eventually. I'm pretty sure after a point each hour would begin same way as the last: with your brain seizing up and you foaming at the mouth, unaware of anything that's happened the past 10,000 cycles.

If he were storing memories in his brain, then the memories would clog up like an old hard drive. But the insinuation is that he's storing the memories outside his body somewhere in the aether. It's the old Holographic Mind theory.

    I remember seeing this decades ago and being so transported, so essentially broken by Myron’s plight. And then I couldn’t find it again. A few years later, Groundhog Day came out, and I was so mad that the time bounce had been cast as a source of comedy. For all the huzzah surrounding that movie, this tragedy is where my heart lies. So beautifully hopeless, strange, and terrifying.

      Time is such a weird concept, the fact you can't go back or relive/change a single second of it, or visit the future is very sad - but also a blessing.
      Stories like this are fascinating for all the 'what ifs'. Imagine if you woke one day and found it was a date 20 years previously, and you're living, working and interacting with all the people you knew back then (some dead) - but they have no idea you've come from and seen the future...

    The short film, inspired by the short story of the same name, that later inspired the feature-length TV movie 12:01 starring Jonathan Silverman & Helen Slater.
    I have to say that, though the title is about as similar as you can get, and the "time bounce" wording used (with its idea of consciousness existing outside of time), Kurtwood Smith here plays Myron as a very different type of man than Barry is in 12:01. Both characters are played flawlessly, but I feel that Kurtwood really shows us just what a hell it could be to be stuck in just one hour.
    Of course we'd all like to see how the time bounce happened, and how Myron got his consciousness jogged just enough to become a "separate variable" so only he's aware etc., but this is a short film don't forget; for more explanations, fleshed out ideas, and a happier resolution, got to the TVM, but for a glimpse at hell, stay here.

    One time I caught this by accident on Channel 4 here in the UK. Read the premise in the listings and thought "It's just like Groundhog Day." Only this is 3 years older than that classic and a hell of a lot darker. And, as per usual his hell was caused by the military and scientists.

    • @812558
      @812558 Před 3 lety +1

      I mean is it, though? A scientist had a theory that something like what he was experiencing would happen, but we don't really get any information (Or, at least, I didn't pick up on any information) that would suggest scientists or the military caused the time loop.

    My guess to the ultimate fate of Myron Castleman (played by Kurtwood Smith): As evidenced by Castleman being able to remember the past repeats of the 59 minutes period, obviously Castleman's consciousness is not being "reset." Therefore, eventually Castleman's brain will effectively short-circuit from all the accumulated experiences of even an hour repeating endlessly. Castleman would then spend eternity in a vegetated state with no awareness of his surroundings. His body may still be alive, but if you've permanently lost your consciousness you're effectively dead.
