Surron Ultra Bee - it finally happened…

  • Very embarrassing "walk" of shame on the Surron Ultra Bee. Got invited to a group ride with a bunch of gas bikes and ran out of battery at 19 miles. I had to get pulled back to the staging area by my friend @TwoBears036 - The Ultra Bee did not last for the entirety of the ride. I absolutely need an upgraded battery if I want to continue riding with gas dirt bikes. Are electric dirt bikes the future? maybe... maybe not...

    One of the things I hate about riding my UB is constantly worrying about my battery usage and if I'll be able to make it back to my house or trailer. Riding by yourself is one thing. You can pace it and go back when you need to. Thanks for showing the downside of owning an electric. That said, I'm not going back to gas for a dirt bike. I can ride alone for 2 hours of fun, clean it up, re-charge it, oil the chain, and I'm ready for my next ride.

    • @zekd
      @zekd  Před 2 měsíci +2

      For sure. I mostly ride alone for a couple hours during the week after work and its perfect for that. Group rides on the weekends is more of a challenge. Really have to be aware of battery drain. I actually prefer to ride it on the slower more technical trails around us because we could spend 3 hours out int he woods and I only use 60% of battery because we are moving at a much slower pace. It's pretty limited when it comes to faster paced trails.

    Absolutely love your videos! So interesting to see other people test the range. Very odd, I think your battery is at the end of its life or something I’m getting 30 miles on a street set up going a 25 to 30 mile an hour stunting pace. Really need to test it in the dirt and find out what sort of mileage I’m getting on the stock battery. That was in sport mode all day.

      @zekd  Před 2 měsíci

      Thanks man, really appreciate that. I really need to try someone elses stock battery. I always thought my range has sucked compared to others posting their range results. I just chalked it up to my rider weight (230lb w/ gear) but I wonder if I have a dud of a battery. My first ever ride on it I got 16mi of usable range. I was pretty underwhelmed by that. I bought the bike expecting 30mi range.

      @@zekdI just upgraded my battery and sold my stock one. Hoping to test it more in the dirt and on the street. I’m 200 and probably 210 to 215 with gear on.
      There has to be something going on with your battery, even on my smaller bike the light bee I was getting better range than that, about the same weight bike and a 72v 42ah

    There’s something seriously wrong with your mileage. My UB has stock battery and motor. The only mod I have is a 100/90-19 rear tire and I’m regularly getting 20 miles of single track hard enduro with combined forrest road riding on 50% of my battery. My buddy has an identically configured UB and he also gets the same mileage.

    • @zekd
      @zekd  Před 2 měsíci

      What's your rider weight? I'm 230 w/gear and have just chalked up my bad range to my weight. I also would like to test another stock battery and see if maybe I have a dud of a battery.

    • @bingeciren
      @bingeciren Před 2 měsíci

      @@zekd My riding weight with full gear is about 200lbs. So I guess weight is not much of an issue here. However, riding style, terrain, and riding mode probably affects the range more. Most of the time I ride in D mode, which has plenty of power for almost anything. I switch to S mode only for steep hill climbs and/or lifting the front tire to jump across the ruts. D mode seems to give me a perfect traction control for technical riding. I’d say I ride 80% D and 20% in S mode. I made careful calculations regarding optimal configuration and decided to go with the 19” rims to save as much weight as possible. I mounted the original rear tire on the front and installed a 100/90-19 on the rear for maximum traction. To counter the loss in torque due to increase in size of the rear tire, I replaced the stock 46 tooth sprocket with a 50 tooth sprocket. So far so good, I’m happy with the results.

    • @SeynGod
      @SeynGod Před měsícem

      @@bingeciren The rear sprocket and the chain are probably the key. A bigger sprocket helps the bike to climb much better and save some energy. You lose top speed so have to find the balance.

  • @TheTyLife88
    @TheTyLife88 Před 2 měsíci

    I find about the same range for mine, those trails look fast and flowy! When I’m with faster riders doing more open/ higher speed runs, I see low 20’s for range. Most I’ve gotten was just over 30, but I was putting around slowly with my little brother in law.
    Down the road I hope to do controller upgrade to increase range. I don’t want to do battery upgrade as I want to keep the gf’s battery as my “gas check” for hare scrambles. I hate also that I have to ride very slow for any connecting roads, as they take away huge chunks of the range.

    Oh man bummer to hear but glad you had good riding buddies to pull you home. Ok, so I don't think you are too far off on your battery. Riding with a group we subconsciously are blipping the throttle more to catch the guy in front as opposed to smooth throttle action when we ride alone. I see it in this video and I'm very guilty of this as I'm pretty competitive when riding.
    With that said, I am 220lbs before gear and have the same setup (i.e. roller chain, 54T, etc) and I'm getting 25 miles if I run the battery completely dead (I don't do this and stop at 20 mi with just under 20% remaining). This is riding in D-mode, brake gen at 4, coast gen at 2, 50F, ~2000 ft of climbing, and all single track. Couple of questions for you,
    1. What kind of riding temps did you have that day?
    2. Is your chain set up on the lose or tight side? (I ask cuz I noticed a difference when I adjusted mine to the lose side of spec)
    3. How many miles are on your bike? (more curious how many miles you got out of those rear brake pads)
    4. This is more fine details but still nice to have and keep track but a) what brand chain, b)what tires & tubes are you running and c) tire pressure?
    Yeah, I'd love to be able to swing the larger battery but in the meantime I'm looking for a second stock battery so I can at least do loops from camp to get more (s)miles.

    • @zekd
      @zekd  Před 2 měsíci +2

      Thanks for the comment! Yeah, riding alone I can really stretch out the miles. most I ever have gotten was 23mi riding solo. To answer your questions...
      1. It was about 50f degrees, normal temps currently up in the north west
      2. I'm still wearing the chain in so I have been adjusting it ever couple of rides. It's never been too tight but I does seem to help milage when its looser.
      3. I have around 300mi on the bike
      4. Cheap, roller chain that i picked up from the local dealer to test if it helped range, I'm running Dunlop MX34s all the way around and run the rear around 12psi and the front around 16psi. I think I can get better range if I bump them up but with the trail conditions currently, I need to be at a lower PSI.

      @@zekd Good info!! Today I rode the local Mt range almost exclusively in eco-mode just to see how far I could stretch my range. 14 mi in eco and 2 total miles in D-mode for the steep climbs. It was funny riding in the anemic eco-mode, I really had to focus on carrying my speed which was a good exercise for me.
      In the end I did 16 mi, 3400' of elevation, mostly single track in 50F temps and used 54%. It took some patience going up the climbs a bit slower but there was still enough power (if I carried the speed) on most the 1-track. Anywho, just throwing out data points.
