The MOST important thing I forgot to mention - shoulder checks, aka ‘Life savers’. Do not rely on mirrors only, and before any manoeuvre ALWAYS check over your shoulder, what’s happening around you.
Yes, yes, I didn’t mention speeding, because first of all, if you don’t know that, then no amount of advice is going to help, and second of all, I’m not a hypocrite... 😉
When riding on the road, I never push beyond my skills, and I always leave myself a margin for the unexpected. Broken down cars in the middle of dual carriageway or round a blind bend DO happen, you know..
Ok, ok, that’s it!

I think the phrase you are looking for is, ride defensively ! If you assume everyone can do you harm then you can plan for it. So your most important asset to keep you safe is OBSERVATIONS. Be alert, switched on but don't be nervous! Look as far down the road as you can and scan back to what is immediately infront of you. The earlier you see something the sooner you can plan for it. Take in the information, use that information and give back any information that will assist you and other road users(signals/horn). Then you will be on the first steps to safe systematic riding. BIKE SAFE will point you in the right direction as a taster, but if you want more training join a local ROSPA or IAM group. Converted Sunday morning sports bike rider!

I always keep an eye on wheels of cars at junctions or roundabouts, it’s the first thing you’ll see moving if there about to pull out.

I work in construction and it’s worth mentioning the particular hazards on roads near building sites. Trucks leaving and entering the site, dirt on the road (especially slippery clay), diesel spills, deliveries etc. You can safely assume that no-one is thinking about bike riders in that environment. So slow down near a site guys!

The butterfly concept works!
Long ago, I came up with the drunken master concept and it works for cars as well as bikes. You basically convince the vehicles surrounding you that you're a rolling nightmare within seconds of smashing them and they will steer away to the furthest lane from you. If you are in a tight spot, swerve around erratically; swerve in your lane, sidestepping left to right, swerve again and make it appear that you're drunk, people dropping their phones will curse you assuming that you'll hurt them... Wide open spaces with no one on your rear!
Want some more space, tap the brakes enough to trigger the brake light and always point towards the shoulder of the roadways when you do it as to imply that you aren't fit for operating any vehicle.
My technique is similar to the butterfly technique, but it makes people want to run away from where you're at on the road while focusing on where you are the entire time.
It's basically reverse psychology. You don't want to be the vulnerable one on the road and as long as people are riding in a cars/trucks, they're always going to say that the motorcycle is dangerous; however, when they feel that they're the ones at risk because you instill the same potential back at them, they'll operate their large vehicle as if it were a motorcycle. They will be very aware because you give them no choice to be oblivious and they'll drive responsibly.
Side by side is another story, unless they were behind you to witness the mind game... If you have to be side by side, you should know to stay at the driver side window while giving a few revs it or just tap the horn and wave to dismiss it as an accident when they look towards you to have the best chance of being seen and that's not always enough. You'll have expect them to merge because they will. Already have your plan to get out of the way sorted before it happens in that event.

Yes Drunken Master and Butterfly concept are the same and work well - If a car is close behind you take your feet off the pegs, they will think you are a loon and about to step off your bike! (and will keep back) Also the eye picks up sweeping motions better! Lastly Joanna, "Hearible" @7.53 is a perfectly good word
Important one that is rarely mentioned is don’t ride when tired or dehydrated. It has an incredible effect on your judgement. The equivalent of riding drunk in severe cases. Always take a break every hour or so. No more than two hours.

Agree with all those well put points. One other very cheap way of increasing safety is to fit a louder horn. I once owned a Land Rover 90 and one day whilst under the bonnet checking the oil I realised that it had the exact same horn as my Ducati, same make same size and make. The difference was that the Ducatii horn made a pathetic squeak like a scooter whereas the Land Rover horn was so loud that MOT testers would jump in shock when they tested it. So I simply purchased a Land Rover horn for less than £10 and it fitted straight on. Now when I sound the horn car drivers pay attention because they think a large vehicle is about to become a threat to THEIR safety rather than a bike which in their minds never is a threat to THEM which is the basis of all car/bike accidents.
Thanks for this! I think they are all good tips. You mentioned lane positioning at the end and I would add that following distance is critical, especially on two-lane highways. Too many people--in cars as well as on bikes--travel very closely behind large trucks, making them invisible to drivers coming the other way who want to overtake as soon as the trucks go by, and also making it more likely the bike will collide with a car when the rider sneaks a peak around the truck. I also use positioning within the lane according to conditions---for example, outside, for more warning when approaching intersections, and for "occupying" the lane when I think overtakers might try to come into my lane. We have very low standards of rider education in the US, and most of what we learn is through experience and by word-of-mouth, which means you have to survive hazards and mistakes in order to learn from them. I wish we had levels of licensing as you do in the UK. Again, great video!

Great tips Jo! The Butterfly Theory is intriguing, and makes a lot of sense. While I've never heard of it, I have heard of other Riders weaving back and forth, for visibility...I've just never heard a name for it, or that particular reasoning. Great information though, all of it!

Hi JoJo. Love you videos. I commute everyday on my bike for work as well as playing on the weekends. I found that not necessarily loud exhuast but flashing my hi beams while making my way through traffic works best in southern California

My rule of thumb is I never look at the driver, if a dog was driving I wouldn't notice because I'm looking at the front wheel. If the front wheel moves half an inch I can react if I'm looking at the driver my eye then has to find a point between the driver the vehicle and the background to realize they are pulling out and thats to late.....How many times have you heard a rider say "But he was looking right at me" so take the driver out of the equation and look at the front wheel.......Hope that makes sense.
Edit: When it comes to animals: If you can eat it in one sitting without leaving the table...then don't do anything stupid to avoid it.
If the wheel moves (half an inch) the whole car moves, therefore the driver moves. Yes DO Look at the driver.

This kind of advice is rare and so important. I've found doing some track days and also having raced is also very useful to know tyou and your bikes limits.. and braking, front brake only for most situations...back brake emergency braking is useless!
Another top tip is headlight warnings. Not to be confused with "flashing" at people which should be avoided. When overtaking, a motorcycle can be hard for other road users to see in their mirrors as you make your way passed them. Decent road position coupled with a headlight warning for a couple seconds before you pass can highlight your intensions to others and make the overtake safer. But I agree number one on the list is my preferred method, assume no-one has seen you 👍🏻 Top job Jo
Jo, good advise on staying safe. I would recommend having additional training as well. Being able to read the road and traffic conditions will ultimately make us safer riders. Love your videos, ride safe.

my last crash was on a relativly emty motorway 6:00 in the evening on my way to work. i always commute on the bike but i still would say the more you ride the wiser it makes you you learn to see the dangers without thinking about them.
Great Video. The only thing I might add, stay away from Black helmets and jackets bc they make you look cool. I believe those neon colors are more helpful than the loud pipes. Training is so important in riding bikes. Your friends will never be as useful. Also, many people suggest avoiding the group rides. I hate seeing crazy group of riders doing crazy stuff on bikes.
Becker Inal too many colours blend in to the surroundings. All black actually works during the day. Watch a super bike race from a normal distance and I bet you can’t tell who’s who. Because the colours blend in. Hi viz yellow/green doesn’t really work now because it’s too common. The brain has kind of stopped sensing it means look out. Orange is better or pink is best.

please tell us how do you stay attached to the seat on your cbr1000rr, i fly back when i fully accelerate, specially on naked powerful bikes?
Noisy is good! When I got my speed triple I had the standard exhaust and people didn’t really hear me coming but when I changed it people do move out of the way. I’d never go back to riding with a standard can. Also, MAIN BEAM during the day/dusk. Yes it’s annoying for other drivers but I’d rather them see me and be annoyed than not see me and kill me. Also, standard yellow/green hi viz doesn’t really work now, it’s too common, the brain has kind of desensitised to it. Orange is better or hi viz pink does actually work!

Nice tips JoJo.. I would also mention safety gear.. If you imagine that each time you get on your bike that you’re going to come off it, always wear all of your gear.. I’m not sure I like the part where you said you don’t pay particular attention to junctions when you’re in your car though, hehe.. what if a biker pulls out of the junction when you’re in your car?.. Everyone should be 100% switched on, eyes and mind on the road from the moment you set off to the moment you stop.. on a separate note, love your eyes, hubba hubba!😘

Effects on the body is a huge one as well, riding tired, hungry and getting wet and cold, during commuting, rides out, they all have a negative impact on a riders ability and judgment. I wear contact lenses, I try and get the lenses in a good half hour to an hour before I need to be out on the bike. It gives my eyes time to adjust.

Jo notice you never mentioned speed. You butterfly theory was good but it's not that your brain ignores something small coming straight at you it more that your brain struggles to judge the speed of it and the distance of it. Most modern bikes with two headlights only have one working on dipped beam because in the dim light or darkness two lights on a bike look like a car in the distance. ( It's why I think bike manufacturers should make lights one above the other and not side by side. The other big thing is riding is a perishable skill like all skills, and there are people who haven't been out on their bike for 4 / 6 months and they think they can just jump on and ride like they did at the end of last season. Sports men and women don't just jump straight back into a match on the first day of the new season they have pre season training. Sorry for going on a bit but those are just my thoughts. Not only do loud pipes warn drivers that you are coming, but I've also found traffic parts when filtering.

I'm told the highest percentage of motorcycle accidents occur on country roads, especially on bends. To throw in a bit more advice - Stay within the speed limits, ride within your capabilities and beware of farm vehicles, horses, mud, gravel and potholes on country roads.

That's a good video. Advice is good, on overtaking, don`t arse about get it down quick and safe!
As a truck driver can I say that on Duals and M-Ways. Take not of truck number plates! If its a European one the driver has massive blindspots! If overtaking NEVER NEVER NEVER sit along side EVER!!!!! Even in a car. This is the main cause of all those front end shunts you see as trucker cant see the car next too him or just in front.

I just had my bike stolen in broad daylight outside busy office , my tip is to make sure you still have your bike if you ever leave it for even a short time.

Asume all want to knock you down, never overtake when there is an entrance on the other side of the road. freeze , good point alot of accidents happen becuse of this. the rider freezes so does not act to divert and hopefull avoid the problem. Don’t commute, its only a matter of time before someone clips you.

I think four wheelers need electronic driving systems that stops them from pulling out or rear ending another vehicle (like an auto pilot or something). This will increase bike safety ALOT!

Bikes are pretty benign. The problem is everyone else on the road (drivers and animals). Good thing is, bikers have a lot more to see than anyone inside a cage is able to see. We also have a lot more room to work with in our lane.
Great tips Joanna. Bikers need to be less aggressive, and more defensive. And try to stay calm. Yelling and screaming at some driver with poor skills, isn't going to improve their driving. It just puts you in a poor mental state to continue riding. Be safe... and eat your veggies... lol

I was recently told about a follower who was bullied of the road by 4 Meat heads of sports bike Because he was following the speed limit and the Meat heads wanted to "" Have Fun "" totally disgusting ... I`m no saint but some ridings who come out in the summer need to learn Respect

Kudos, Joanna, not to mention most drivers are dummies. I think your butterfly theory might be physiological. The human eye has a natural blind spot where the optic nerve attaches to the eyeball. It doesn't have any receptors (cones or rods) causing a blind spot. If one stares leaving objects in the blind spot while driving, riding or flying the receptors don't have a signal to send to the brain. In your words, assume your Invisible, because you are!
I'm sorry but you saying that when you in your cage you don't pay attention ..! Here's tip number six for you ...open your eyes in the cage to and you may not kill a fellow rider .....sounds to me your putting your self at risk more than being safe ...
