    William Afton/Springtrap is easily my favourite Five Nights at Freddy's character, but over the years of being brought back again and again more fans have been expressing disappointment in the series unwillingness to branch out and let the character rest, but how did that come to be and what made him so special in the first place? Here's Springtrap: A Horror Icon in Ruin.

    Part of the problem with Springtrap is a problem that plagues many horror icons. Once they become a regular figure in a franchise, the question turns from "will they beat them" to "HOW will they beat them", causing the villain to be as scary as Team Rocket.

    • @yourselfcrab2361
      @yourselfcrab2361 Pƙed rokem +421

      Compare him with Griffith from Berserk, it's a strange comparison I know, but in Berserk the question is not "how are we going to defeat him" it's more like "can we even defeat him?", That's something all horror villains are lacking.

    The problem in general that not enough people admit is that Scott just isn’t as good of a writer that people treat him like he is. It’s plain as day that the series was rewritten multiple times as the games went along and it has resulted in tons of plot holes and a story that is literally impossible to fully piece together into something that makes sense.

    • @sethisevilone02
      @sethisevilone02 Pƙed rokem +325

    • @CoOlKyUbI96
      @CoOlKyUbI96 Pƙed rokem +359

      Part of the issue was also that a lot more of the engagement with the series came from dissecting obscure clues and implications. As opposed to clear cut writing

    • @busyg67
      @busyg67 Pƙed rokem +423

      It’s pretty obvious from the beginning that Scott didn’t expect Fnaf 1 to receive the reaction it got thus he never planned out a whole story for fnaf and went through all the rewrites. Scott really wasn’t some mastermind writer that had everything in mind, and the fandom dissecting every bit of lore didn’t help

    • @digitalgloop12
      @digitalgloop12 Pƙed rokem +194

      @Busy Ghost the thing is, however, Scott managed to write a decent little tale with the first 3 games. He could've left it there, and while fnaf3 did disappoint gameplay-wise, it did wrap up the story with only a few peripheral mysteries. Instead, he made fnaf 4 and decided to revolve the entire series around the Aftons and its really all been downhill since. The cracks were ripped open exposing how shoddy the writing and planning is. You could tell that he was making it up as he went along. You could see him changing and retconning things. It got messy. It lost its spark for a while. Then the books went and made things more weird. I especially hate how the books were said to explicitely be a seperate Canon from the games, but overtime the writing for the games made it impossible to not use book information to fill the gaping holes. Now we got people talking about illusion disks, fazgoo and robot children. It's gotten really convoluted and really silly, and not in a super fun way.

  • @glimmerkepu
    @glimmerkepu Pƙed rokem +775

    Scott is clearly a 'less is more' guy, he's undoubtedly gifted when it comes to creating horror and scifi concepts that work the best in his games with minimal and abstract storytelling but after Fnaf 3's middling reception it's clear that he shifted focus to a long-form story with the books and Fnaf 4 onwards, which causes great ideas to feel very scattershot in their execution. Glitchtrap and Vanny deserved to be their own characters.

      and I'd make Glitchtrap this sort of dark reflection of Vanny's sanity, this illusion symbolising the dark path she took that only exists in Vanny's consciousness to push her into doing what she does, it's a metaphorical way of storytelling.

Even the “he always comes back” line felt more as a way of saying that his actions will forever haunt the legacy of Fazbear Entertainment. Fnaf's story could've been so much more heartbreaking. Imagine if fnaf 4's protagonist was Cassidy instead of the crying child, and the minigames followed Cassidy's story leading up to their death and getting to know their hopes for the future and how much the happiest day meant to them. Springtrap is honestly really similar to Michael Myers for me. In his debut he was terrifying. Amazing design, killing for no real reason, and they scarcely showed him in detail so when they did it was even more terrifying. But after his popularity rises they began putting him in more projects that weren't necessary, adding in lore that made him less scary and ruining his design more and more, as well as showing him more often which ruins his creepiness, even if he still did have some cool moments. Now they bring him back for no reason other than the fact that he's the recognizable villain, and in his final appearance he's essentially a weak old man. I could've just described either one of them and it would be true

Up until fnaf 3, we hadn't seen a real human character in the games before, just these haunted animatronics. This got worse in legacy of the force mainly because threw writers were doing the series thus making the mandos and Bobas sudden importance in her books obvious. The fact that the sequel series swerved to show the mandos as amoral mercenaries who would hurt kids and were beaten by jedi indicates that the opposing side could do it too (she had left star wars by that point I think).

His skin is almost completely gone, but his muscles are the last things left with his bones. You know what could've been a cool idea? Springtrap getting absolutely pissed at Vanny for reviving him
    Think about it. As Mark said, Springtrap has literally nothing left to do, everything he built up is gone. What's he supposed to do? Keep coming back over and over and eventually find something else? So eventually, Vanny revives Springtrap and when he wakes up he charges at her and barrades her, saying that this isn't what he wanted Yada Yada. So Springtrap idk, maybe kills Vanny at that point? This is all just a very loose idea tbh but I think that works way better then just "yeah let's keep bringing back Springtrap"

      Honestly? I hope that shit happens in the Ruin DLC for Security Breach.
      Dude has nothing to go back to. He’s probably fully accepted his fate in hell, so being brought back for some idiot that worships him probably WOULD piss him off.
      So imagine if, in the end, he just says a fuck you to Cassidy and ends himself permanently, by choice this time, so he can say he won in a twisted way by not letting the kids be the one to end him/make him suffer, and drags Vanessa and extension Glitchtrap, who I think is still in Vanny, down with him so he “doesn’t have to suffer alone.” Freeing the kids as a result, ending Afton permanently, but still leaving simple high-tech robots as threats for those who want more of the series.
      I mean..the books have the mimic, so they can focus on the mimic, completely separate from Afton after he ends himself and takes every trace of himself left down with him.

No matter how many times he dies, the writers can always say his data was copied onto another device & if they say he's really dead this time & end the story, it'll be like "Really? Why didn't they have a backup that time? Why would they ever not have at least a few?"

What makes a villian scary is seeing LESS of them, we never see bendy be the main enemy of every chapter in BATIM/BATDR, huggy wuggy isn't the main villian of poppy playtime, the less we see of these characters the less repetitive they feel because of how there's now a worry of "if they're gone, who's the next?" It creates a sense of new excitement for the new villian.

    I genuinely believe FNAF 3 was the peak of FNAF as a whole. I have always appreciated a mystery, and I think sometimes it’s better to be left wondering than to have a complex answer laid out before you. When it comes to a story, sometimes the mystery alone is compelling enough-perhaps the answer is less satisfying.
    That mystery is what kept me genuinely interested in FNAF from 1-4, but as more and more was revealed (“revealed”?) and the story got increasingly wacky, weird, and overly complex, the intrigue started to die for me.
    It’s more fun to wonder why this guy murdered a bunch of kids rather than know that he did it because of remnant and because his daughter was maimed or whatever.

    My headcanon is that the Fazbear brand was too popular to die out. They’ve gotten themselves out of legal trouble multiple times, so I think the idea of the Pizzaplex can still work.
    If Vanny was an Afton-obsessed security who broke into the Pizzaplex and rewired the animatronics to do what Afton did in the past, I think that would make a better story.
    I also think Help Wanted could work very well if it was a visual representation of Vanny’s obsession with the Fazbear franchise. It would also make it so Glitchtrap is still Afton, but in more of an ideological sense rather than a science-fiction sense.
    Overall, I think Security Breach & Ruin have interesting concepts that can still be explored in future games.

In FNAF 3, we see that Spring Bonnie was probably a cute kid friendly suit, but when William Afton was scared of the souls and got spring-locked, he looks terrifying. But the fact that his determination and vengeance was so powerful that he fused with an animatronic is so cool and crazy. I personally think they should have stopped fnaf at either sister location or after UCN. But he is still cool. In Help Wanted, he was terrifying because you saw how he looked at a child's point of view. Sure, security breach was a bit much but still. Anyway good Job Mark. And Congrats on the YouTooz

This copy or recreation of his malice that infected a computer and then someone's brain, and loved the idea of Vanny being the "Reluctant follower" but they dropped the ball IMO. They did nothing with it in SB and just decided to bring William (Or someone pretending to be William?) back. I liked seeing him honestly but... only because I had like a Fan Boy moment. Now with all the Mimic stuff going on I get a bit confused. I am not sure I love the lore where it's going but... yeah I'm still going to tag along. I think for me the best thing about William in those early installments was the ambiguity of his character. For the longest time we didn’t know anything about him beyond the horrific outcome of his murders. We had to use our imagination to paint a full picture of this sick individual and that’s the best kind of horror. However, once Sister Location introduces the idea that he’s just some mad scientist family man trying to experiment with some science-fiction mumbo jumbo “remnant” it kinda sucked all the intrigue of his character out. Suddenly he wasn’t this mysterious serial killer without a face. He was just a caricature of a crazy guy with some grand evil scheme.

    The whole series needs a full reboot. Basically just remake the first game with better character designs and maybe better graphics, make the second game as unnerving as the first, make the third game play better, and make it more unnerving (basically make all games more scary, Scott seemed to think he had to sacrifice scare factor for lore, which I think most people would disagree with), make the 4th game a little more interesting, sister location should have the scifi element toned down imo, the crazy designs of the characters really killed the immersion of the games in the future imo, then make pizzaria simulator a little bigger (and fix scraptrap obviously lmao), and end on a slightly more serious ultimate custom night, that game was basically just fnaf arcade mode, which is fine, but if it wasn't gonna be serious then idk why it tied into the story. When Steel Wool bought FNAF, that's the direction it should've gone, not digging into the goofy scifi stuff in security breach.
