Over the years I think I've made it clear that I have a certain fondness for the character of Brian Griffin from the popular adult animated comedy Family Guy, but as time, as gone on the character I once loved, has gotten worse and worse and today we're going to explore that with Brian Griffin: An Icon in Ruin.

As a lonely kid with autism I actually “wrote letters to” Brian as a form journaling. But as the writers screwed him up over the years and he changed I found myself losing faith in the show and him, to the point that I wrote a final letter “to” Brian explaining why I felt he’d changed for the worst and that I wouldn’t be writing to him anymore.
And the weird thing is it’s odd to think I ever loved either him or the show because it now feels like such a foreign concept

I've never been quite able to put my finger on it, but I think I finally figured it out: The change for how they wrote Brian's character was a reaction to who he was paired with. When Brian was with Peter, Brian was able to play the straight man, comment or criticize on the theme in order to get Peter back on track, or even make himself look smart in comparison to Peter's stupidity.
When Brian got paired with Stewie (which I do feel works better, thematically) Brian wasn't really able to fit those same roles. Stewie was already level-headed, and was over the "Kill Lois" thing for the most part. Stewie was obviously smarter than Brian, so Brian didn't have room to comment or criticize much because of the intelligence gap (insults aren't criticisms). Brian couldn't even keep Stewie on track of whatever the topic was meant to be, because Stewie's entire shtick was counter to what an infant is supposed to be. Stewie goes on adventures, blows things up, time travels, etc. Stewie is the absurd and fantastical; an eccentric dandy with a desire for adventure and mayhem. Peter is (mostly) grounded; a stupid, fat drunk who is easily amused.
I suppose Brian can still play the straight man with Stewie, but that's kind of a given!

Going into the Quagmire thing where he called Brian out, I believe that's where the show truly jumped the shark, and went to the point of no return. Yes, you could see it earlier than that, as Brian was basically becoming an a-hole with terrible writing for no reason. And yes, what Quagmire said was right about him, even if it was the writers who were basically saying it
But the worst part is that: It was Quagmire who said it. If it was someone like Joe, or Cleveland, or even the mustached gay dude who goes "Oh hey!", I would understand. But Quagmire? The same Quagmire who in a S4 Brian episode where he nearly raped a Bachlorette contestant on live TV, then later wanted to sleep in a 3-way with her and HIS MOM!! The same Quagmire that said he wait for his newborn baby girl in 18 years to sleep with her. The same Quagmire who has been straight-up called a "rapist" by Peter. That Quagmire.

Tells him that he doesn't contribute at all in the family (in peter's body) even though he takes care of stewie and even saved him from his parents themselves

      @MysteriousTomJenkins Pƙed rokem +1

Yeah, that whole rant from Quagmire practically described himself. Brian only became more accurate to it later on but like..Quagmire wants to fuck Lois (and he has fucked Cleveland's wife), he has countless illegitimate children he runs away from and later he gives his daughter up for adoption. Just because he's honest that he dates women for their bodies doesn't make it right, also besides Jillian I can't think of a bimbo Brian went after as he is in love with Lois who is intelligent, an old woman, Chris' intelligent teacher and he was actually in love with Jillian. I also like how Quagmire says Brian doesn't really do anything political wise but like...he got weed legalized and then illegalized and got gay marriage legal in Quahog, no help from the homophobic Quagmire who literally said no.
Its really shows the lack of self awarness where the writers thought they were describing Brian (though he got there eventually) when they were describing Quagmire to a T while ignoring the good parts of Brian.

Quagmire doesn't tell all of the women he sleeps with that he has every STD known to man as shown in one of the Halloween episodes.
Like previously mentioned, Brian actually was willing to donate one of his kidneys to Peter even if he would die from it, while Quagmire never bothered to see if he was a match, where he would've lived just fine.

He stands up to protect a kid and expects nothing in return for it. And when the kid's mother decides she no longer wants to date him, his primary concern is that he'll never get to babysit this kid again. That was a really touching episode. I'm just hoping we get more of that now.

this was an interesting take. i only started really getting into Family Guy after the characters were all Flanderized, so I liked that they were just shallow archetypes, and saw the show more of a sketch comedy like SNL, where the characters were all just in-universe actors(plus they did so many 4th-wall breaks it was easy to see them that way). I saw the show's theme song as purely ironic, given that most of the eps of FG i saw were full of sex and violence, and definitely some edgy fucked up humour. Brian was always a hypocritical asshole to me, but I liked that he sometimes acted like a real dog. He's always been paired up with Stewie as far as I knew him, so seeing him no longer be Peter's best friend didn't phase me much.
Plus, Peter's a way more horrible person if we're gonna take him seriously, so Brian being a dick isn't nearly as bad haha.

Also, isn't Brian's entire existence fucked up? He is both treated as an animal and a person at the same time. Like you could legally put him down if you wanted to and not get any flack for it. It's been shown many times that out of all his siblings, he is the only anthropomorphic one. And whenever there is another anthropomorphic dog on the show, it's always related to him in some way. Whether it's his cousin or his full-on replacement.
Also, isn't it weird how he almost only dates humans? Are humanoid dogs just that uncommon in the Family Guy universe? Or just he just have a thing for them? From the top of my head, I can only think of 2 dogs that he's been with. (One anthro and one normal) and over 6 girls (one that he was even able to procreate with!) Shouldn't this be controversial in the Family Guy universe? On one hand, he is as smart and capable but on another, he's still pretty much treated like a normal dog. Where does the person start and the animal stop?

Shadow from STH wasn't THAT bad, by the end of the game he becomes really good and learns to let go of the past, and after that, 06 happens and only improves his character even more, he is nice to sonic and all his other friends and he no longer looks back, infact he doesn't even blame omega after being told that it is him that will capture shadow in the future

@@superhydra8873 I agree, though I was more so talking about the 2010's depiction of Shadow we have now. He's arrogant and overly competitive, and apparently Sega mandates don't even allow him to have friends, meaning that Rogue and Omega are apparently nothing more than just business partners. I long for what he was like in 06.

I've never watched the show myself, but my brother went on a full binge. He went in all bright-eyed and bushy tailed, telling me all about the funny gags and how Brian was his favorite character. Over time, it became more and more of a chore, and it all clicked when Quagmire called him out. He realized just how far his favorite character had fallen.
