NASA’s Webb Reaches Alignment Milestone, Optics Working Successfully

  • Following the completion of critical mirror alignment steps, the James Webb Space Telescope team has great confidence that the observatory’s optical performance will meet or exceed the science goals it was built to achieve.
On March 11, the Webb team completed the stage of alignment known as “fine phasing” - and at this key stage in the commissioning of Webb’s Optical Telescope Element, every optical parameter that has been checked and tested is performing at, or above, expectations. The team found no critical issues and no measurable contamination or blockages to Webb’s optical path. The observatory is able to successfully gather light from distant objects and deliver it to its instruments without issue.
Although there are months to go before Webb ultimately delivers its new view of the cosmos, achieving this milestone means the team is confident that Webb’s first-of-its-kind optical system is working as well as possible.

They also were carefully chosen to obfuscate any failures. JWST would always have been the highest resolution infrared images taken from space, because no infrared telescopes has ever been sent to space, of this size. It is a marginal statement designed to be truthful, but also is pure fluff. We already know that.

From the Image Stacking of the individual mirrors prior to their unity. And next the Coarse Phasing of these each individual mirror aligned to each other mirror through your Piston Levelling to “eventuate” a complete Monolithic Primary Mirror. With the final checking by taking a picture of of the interior line up plus the mathematical guides etc.
And so you hear the term when say socialising “it’s not Rocket Science” well this IS a fine example of just that, and beautifully explained.

The closed captions' "De-fractional imaging" (twice) and a couple other errors....... I'm very happy you have crack astronomers and engineers making this thing live up to beyond expectations. It'd be nice to have captioners with sufficient astronomy knowledge to fully transmit all aspects of the info presented on the sound track. Hoping for continued good results.

It makes collimation of normal telescope designs such as SCTs I've had, look ridiculously easy. But then again, everything about the technology built into JWST just to get it to fit inside the rocket fairings is impressively sophisticated.

How big are the losses in resolution by averaging the focus on every instrument?
Would it be feasible to refocus the telescope to a different instrument(like the first pictures on nircam) if something very interesting was found and you want to increase the resolution on that instrument?

How does JWST point to different parts of the "sky"? I can't find this info anywhere. The mirror seems fixed to the heat shield and I would presume that the heat shield must remain between the mirror and the sun. And I don't see the overall mirror segment structure bending around relative to the shield? I know the mirror can realign but I don't know how it moves so that it looks up or down or do the right or left?
