Watch Boyz N' The Hood Now: AAN.SonyPictures.com/BoyzNTheHood
BOYZ N THE HOOD is the critically acclaimed story of three friends growing up in a South Central Los Angeles neighborhood, and of street life where friendship, pain, danger and love combine to form reality. "The Hood" is a place where drive-by shootings and unemployment are rampant. But it is also a place where harmony coexists with adversity, especially for three young men growing up there: Doughboy (Ice Cube), an unambitious drug dealer; his brother Ricky (Morris Chestnut), a college-bound teenage father; and Ricky's best friend Tre (Cuba Gooding, Jr.), who aspires to a brighter future beyond "The Hood." In a world where a trip to the store can end in death, the friends have diverse reactions to their bleak surroundings. Tre's resolve is strengthened by a strong father (Larry Fishburne)who keeps him on the right track. But the lessons Tre learns are put to the ultimate test when tragedy strikes close to home, and violence seems like the only recourse.

True . Because I still do chores in my parents house . Because I had a option they said I either do chores or pay one of their bills . The reason why I chose chores because I wasn't planning on paying no bills until I got my own place and get a decent job . I was working at 1st before the pandemic but I about to get back on schedule working again real soon until I find another job . It takes time for that to happen .

God knows how many men become extremely insecure and violent because they had horrible fathers. Fathers can fuck people up so badly and leave them wandering around the rest of their lives with those experiences and lash out against others because of it.

Being a child of the 80s and 90s to a single mother, there is a huge difference in the way single moms are allowed to behave. They don't call it the dead beat dad era for no reason. Women are to blame for a portion of this though, because back in the 80s and 90s women could just request full custody and would be granted it with full impunity, and the dad would get slammed with unreasonable child support fees and would have to go to court and fight for visitation rights. A single mom held all the cards and lots of dads would just bail. For the few dads that stuck around and wanted to be in the life of their kid, they had to put up with a bunch shit.
That's why this scene is important because it captures a glimpse of what it was like. Trey's mom is allowing him to go live with his father, and furious is even thanking her for it.
Nowadays it's much different. A court will typically order split custody of children, which means the kids will have to live with mom for a week, then dad for a week. The only times you see full custody now is if it proven one parent can't provide a home to the kids, in which case they will be responsible for paying child support. Any other living arrangements can be negotiated. The woman no longer gets all the say and determine the outcome of who gets the kids.

The true message of this movie is about how powerful dads are. We see these boyz never actually grow up, they just get taller, because even grown they have no Father or direction. Tre is the exception, and even he stumbles, but finds his way again.
