Furious is very intelligent and he actually respects Tre's mother Brenda; I understood when he told her "this is you" and she felt a little way about it because he knew she wanted the finer things in life and he knew that really mean't assimilating into white upper class. Love this scene because Reva checked Furious. “You cute but you ain’t special.” She had to remind Furious that Tre needs a mother just as much as a father. Most women would have tried to make it one sided but her respect for Furious shines through because she acknowledges Furious’ strong fatherhood bond but she had to let him know it’s still a balance to parenting and the way Furious just smirks after it all. I don’t doubt that’s same fire he saw when they first they met. The most important thing here is, this is all about their son. They may not be together anymore and their lifestyles and mindsets often make them bump heads but they put most of that to the side immediately when it came to Tre, truely 2 strong black parents. Wonderful scene.

I love this scene because it wasn’t a cliche depiction that leans heavily on one side. At first I was cheering for his tenacity and hardline approach to Trey but when Angela spoke she also made an equally good point. They both made good arguments.
what equally good point. Tre had one good parent and one parent that dropped him off in the hood because she didn't want to put the work in to help change his attitude. Tre's dad was solid though and gave him everything he needed to know to make better decisions than the people around him were
@@bryan3487furious ain't perfect and u ain't either!!!
@bryan3487 Yes, but they both spent 7 years each raising him. She took all the steps to try and fix him, but he couldn't, and clearly, he got expelled from school. Tre lived in the hood with his mother, too. The mother realised that she will not be able to stop him going down a violet path and moved him to his fathers. Yes, she was able to become successful but they all came from the hood.
I agree, she loved Tre, and that was a heartbreaking sacrifice to drop him off like that, but she felt it would be best. In the meantime she obviously did something, maybe went back to school, to secure a better life and job. It’s not said, but I kinda feel like if Tre was ever going back to live with her, she’d have a better lifestyle for him to come back too. I did not view her as a deadbeat who wanted to get rid of him

This scene beautifully explains why these two weren’t together. You had Tre’s mother who wanted the best things in life and wanted to live upper class and then you had Tre’s dad who was more content with his situation.
I don't think he was content. I think he made a conscious choice. For example, You can tell by the way he match her "class" level and ordered a "Cafe au lait" (and how she subtly reacted like she was impressed), he had the smarts, the intelligence and the wherewithal to choose a "high class" path too if he wanted. I think he was more so choosing to stay in the hood to be amongst his own people rather than assimilate.
@@theradiokid When I say content I don't mean it as a pejorative but rather as a way to describe him feeling at ease with not living in an upper class environment. What I like, though subtle is in their choice of coffees. Today, what they ordered would not really bat an eye. But back then, these types of coffees were not as well known to most people. Though available, few people in middle class touched them. Here you have Angela, in her new high class style of living ordering an Espresso and Lawrence, when his turn came, though not as high up in his ex-wife's financial level orders a Café au lait, by no means a simple man's coffee. This was almost like a duelling banjos moment between the two showing two strong individuals who know the difference from the norm and one letting the other know they are the others equal. Hence why they were drawn to each other in the first place.
Great observation.

It was set in the early 1990's, not 1790's.Where were you in the 90's that people didn't know about different coffees yet? This is the same decade that saw Starbucks begin to boom, things like Espressos etc were already well established for a long time and already consumed on a large scale by the average Joe.
It was nothing more than trying to portray them as not the average Ghetto Black, they near enough spelled that out word for word. I really don't think it's anywhere near as profound as you are reading into it here.
@@IAmPez Where was I? I was in diners and other food and coffee places in the mid to late 90s ordering Cappuccinos and it was STILL not so available. Then I went to coffee places in Europe where they served the real thing with proper hand made cream. It was not until the mid 00's when I moved back to Australia when Coffee shops were now on the high list of go to places with a much larger array of choices. Perhaps America was different. But I still remember movies from the 80s that made this big deal about how "pansy" a cappuccino was if a character ordered or drank those in the US. Did these coffees exist then? Yes. Was it as common as it became later in that it was the in thing everybody in middle to lower class were drinking? I don't think they were and I know from my own experience it was no that much on the ordering preference.
