Thanks for the review! I have been looking for different Mid type tents for solo use and Bonfus Middus models seem to be the less reviewed ones. It’s easy to find reviews opinions for MLD’s or HMG’s, but as a Finn it would be nice to get one from Europe without the customs hassle.

The transport and to be able to buy within Europe was one of the reasons I choose it, among some other things as well off course, nice not to have to pay customs and such 👍🏻

thanks, nice, informative and concise vid. I totally agree, it is a great tent, I'm guessing with at least ten titanium stakes, it will come down to around 650gr. I have plex solo, 450 gr with stakes and tarptent stratospire li 2p 850 gr with stakes and I must confess I prefer tarptent for the same reason your Middus is better then altaplex: 1. double wall(huge advantage, condensation doesn't drip on my gear and prevents sleeping bag from wiping wet inside walls) 2. better ventilation = less condensation 3. zipper (no flapping with strong wind, and water sipping in during heavy rains), but for me the penalty is 400gr, ouch :( but your bonfus is kind of half way, which is totally worthy in my opinion
Great summary 👍🏻 and wise words, and good tent selections you have 🙂 I agree 100% on your conclusion! I will use 12 tube stakes from BigSky for this tent, 18 and 20 cm ones at a total weigh of 157 grams. Not the lightest, but I trust them to do the job in case of bad weather.

Thanks for the review, I’m very keen to get this tent for my thru hiking and mountain camping this year. There is little user information in terms of specs and experience so this really helps. Are the rain fly tie out points sewn or taped on like the MLD solomidxl dcf tents? Also are there hem mid points tie out points to add bungee chord for extra stability in winds?
Glad you found it useful 👍🏻 to answer your questions 1) the attachment points are sewn. 2) yes, mid point tie outs on all the sides, the only one not sewn is the back mid tie out. i have this tent aswell and have had some trouble attaching the inner in a good way, i will try your tip with deattaching the hooks and just tying with the shockcord. great review, thanks! 🏕✨

Hej 👋🏻 och tack 🙏🏻… jag kan absolut rekommendera tältet. Har dels vant mig och lärt mig hur jag ska göra med alla saker och så otroligt skönt att sitta i tältet på liggunderlaget med benen utsträckta i absiden och ändå ha plats att laga mat samt utrustning, absiden är stor 🙂
Däremot vissa lösningar kunde gjorts bättre. Men som går att fixa själv.
- upphängning av innern i toppen inte tillräcklig, pallar inte trycket vilket gör att den åker med hela tiden så innern säckar. Har fixat detta med en extra ”klämma” så inget problem.
- innern lossnar om man bara använder medföljande krokar. Jag valde att knyta fast dom istället med justerbar ände.
- när det blåste faaa… 😄 i Jämtland gled linelocken i de starkaste byarna… vilket jag kommer fixa genom att byta till en lite tjockare lina samt extra line lock i änden på guy line. Detta gäller bara peak guy line…. Den får mycket tryck på sig vid stark vind.

Thanks for the review, I have a 64 cm pad in my Altaplex, and I have plenty of space beside for packpods, puffy, foodpack and what not.. In the video it seems like very tight but maybe it does not show right in the video?
In the video you see the Nemo Alpine at 64 cm wide and 193 cm long. The width of the inner is 75 cm and because it’s a double wall tent it doesn’t follow the outer like the Altaplex but stays 75 Cm all the way so yes… you will not have the additional space in the center like the Altaplex… but bigger vestibule on the other hand.
I have all my sleeping clothes (when not worn), puffy and down pants at the top and along the sides electronic bag and water bottles. Everything else is stored in the vestibule.
Tackar för bra film som alltid. Är det krångligt att sätta upp innertältet ? jag har ett Hilldeberg enan idag och funderar på Bonfus Middus, tycker du Bonfus är bättre än enan om man skall vandra 2 veckor i september under ca 10 dagar?
Ursäkta sent svar… mycket nu! Men eftersom jag ägt ett Enan själv kan jag enkelt säga detta är betydligt enklare att sätta upp, mer vindstabilt och lika stora absider. Du får dessutom mer utrymme att sitta upp… lite mindre inner dock, mest på bredden. På längden är det gott om plats för kläder i toppen och ev andra saker i andra änden.
Jag väljer Middus1p alla dagar i veckan. Pallar inte detta tält vinden gör inget tält det… så ja, är du OK med ett 1p tält kommer du bli väldigt nöjd.
Mitt bästa tips, ta bort krokarna och knyt fast innern med medföljande shock cord. Så sitter det kvar samt fortsatt möjligt att justera beroende på pitch. Använd alla 10 fästpunkter. Lycka till 🙂

For me, one of the cons is the rainbow zip on the inner tent. I would much prefer a C-zip.
That’s right, the benefit is the door will not be in the way but with a high risk of getting wet and muddy if lying outside, I try to tuck it in underneath my pad and works ok.A C door is safer alternative in that regard.

Sitter alltid ihop, den fukt som blir torkar fort i sådant material och svårt ändå att inte få innern blöt när man går in och ut i tältet och så… inte värt besväret att ta bort det tycker jag.

Hi and yea, also an alternative to MLD solomid xl…. I have made a few modifications, small things like tying the shock cord between the inner/outer instead of the hooks and added an extra clamp for the inner to stay in place at the top but beside that I’m very happy with the quality and all. I will keep it but also as another freestanding DCF or one using two poles for more internal space and as an alternative. This one is great for above the tree line adventures.
@roberthammenrudh tnx for the quick response. Selling XMid pro and just bought this one through GarageGrownGear on sale. X mid pro is several ounce lighter but pitching is pain on uneven terrain, plus condensation
@@semo7566 ok… I had like zero condensation problems with this one 👍🏻 and super easy to pitch… like all tipis, two stakes at the back, insert the pole and stake out the peak and… a perfect triangle with super good pitch! The height from the ground (good or bad weather) is chosen in the back when pitching the first two and then the height of the pole. Super easy. ❤️

@@semo7566 there is a shock cord in the top attaching the inner to the outer where you can adjust the height for a low or a high pitch. The only thing making it stay’s in place is a small cord lock/clamp and for the weight it doesn’t work very well so added another one for a bigger closing force.
Robert, I'd suggest you also discuss the cost. Cost is probably the #1 reason why most people won't buy this kind of tent and should be mentioned and compared.
You are absolutely right, the question is if DCF is worth the money! Didn’t talk about it because majority who are interested in DCF tents and gear knows this and the ALTAPLEX and Middus are similar in price… a bit depending on where you live but I also heard the Middus and Bonfus gear are available at GarageGrownGear in the US. Haven’t checked the price level though.
How does its stability, wind and rain protection compare to the Hilleberg in harsh weather?
If you mean my Enan I used…it’s another level! Incredible in wind and good rain protection! All dry inside my tent despite really hard rain all night long so thumbs up.
Only thing I’m about to fix is the main guy line that “jumped” in the guy lock on the strongest gusts, like 1-2 cm… a few times. I will change from a 2.5 mm to 2.8 plus ad another lock at the “loose end” for greater closing force.

Not familiar with the brand, how do they compare on price with other brands?
For us in Europe it’s cheaper than for example ZPACKS due not having to pay any customs. For US probably a bit more expensive… cheaper than MLD but slightly more expensive than ZPACKS.
Never fold and roll...Just stuff it, as I do with my DCF tent, and you will be able to pack it down MUCH smaller than a conventional tent. It has no negative effects on the DCF at all, at least none I have noticed after about 50 uses now.
BTW, it is not necessary for the pole to be vertical...A longer sloping pole will work just as well but give considerably more interior space without the pole being in the way.
My DCF pyramid tent also has an external webbing tie out point on the peak so if trees are available I can hold it up via a ridgeline tied between two trees and don't need to have to use a pole inside at all.
I also recommend not using a trekking pole to hold it up...A dedicated folding Carbon Fibre tent pole will be far lighter and pack smaller. I use a dedicated American made 55" (1.4m), 4 section, MLD (Mountain Laurel Designs) Carbon fibre tent pole, that I fitted an adjustable height mini hook onto to hold my LED light. It weighs 92g.
It was custom made to that length for me by MLD and I chose one with four sections that packs down to a very slim package about 35mm in diameter and 40cm long...MLD also give you the option of having more sections, so if you order a five section pole instead it will obviously pack even shorter but the pack diameter will increase.
I keep mine in a real tree camo DCF tent pole bag custom made for me by Wild Sky Gear. He also custom made by real tree camo DCF stuff bag to hold by tent. Don't bank on being able to order custom bags off his yourself as he said he doesn't normally do custom work but he did me a favour after I lost my "irreplaceable" DCF tent bag that came with my tent to the wind on Scafell Pike, so I am very lucky.
Hi 👋🏻, the general recommendations for DCF is to fold and roll the tent, stuffing DCF was previously the recommended choice but was updated some years ago because of less risk of damaging the fabric of fold/roll the tent.
I also prefer having a trekking pole or at least an adjustable pole for being able to adjust the height of the pitch in case of bad weather…and a higher pitch for better airflow if hot. Also lighter because I’m all ready carrying/using it.
I don't think you mentioned price - quoted by Bonfus as around $900 for the shelter plus inner nest, and that's before shipping, import taxes, etc.
A 3FUL Lanshan 1 costs a mere fraction (about one fifth) of that price, and my Pro version weighs only 690g. Sure, it's a silnylon hybrid (the double wall version weighs more), but the size and configuration are similar.
Looking at performance, the front (door) side of the shelter appears too erect for good wind resistance, so it's one of those shelters where you set up rear to the wind and hope it doesn't change during the night!
I would say that at this price, there are better options out there.
Its difficult to compare a budget tent to a ”top of the line DCF” tent. The Lanshan is also smaller, pitches lower and has smaller vestibules. But sure, you can’t compete against that price.
And yea, if not in Europe the customs etc will be expensive… just as for us to import ZPACKS to Europe. For that reason it’s a really good alternative to Altaplex or Plex Solo.

You make some valid points, David but that is just part of the total equation. You need to also consider the robustness, the quality & the durability.
For robustness, the Lanshan is surprisingly good but I’ve seen what happens when 40mph winds clobber them. It’s game over. As for wind changing direction; I believe the Lanshan shall suffer much more; at least it does amongst the group I hike with. Look also at the groundsheets for ruggedness and water resistance. The DCF will not wet out.
For quality, just look at how many of the Lanshans leak from the start. Not all, I grant, but who wants to find out during their first downpour? See WildBear and the issues she had with seams leaking.
Durability; an unknown for both but I reckon the DCF will outperform the silnylon by a long stretch.
In addition, when silnylon is subjected to torrential rain for extended periods it wets out and stretches. DCF doesn’t absorb water. I really don’t like getting out of my tent in the middle of a stormy night to adjust guy lines that have loosened due to material wetting out. It’s also easier to sponge dry the interior when suffering from condensation as well as shaking the DCF tent when packing away in the rain. The extra bonus being that as it doesn’t absorb water you are not carry a heavier soggy tent.
Not withstanding, you’re right about the Lanshan - it offers good value.
However, what really attracted me to the Bonfus is that it genuinely accommodates a taller user - I’m 1.95m (6’5”) and it’s a challenge to find any tent that I can fit into.
Taking up more space in your rucksack is not necessarily a bad thing, it stops you taking so much non essential stuff.

I’m 180 cm and that’s about 5.9 feet I think.
Have now tried my Bonfus Middus 1P with a separate inner tent myself and I chose this because I partly wanted a light DCF tent and partly wanted a cheaper option than Z-packs which are extremely high in price.
After dialogue via email with Bonfus, the choice fell on a Middus 1P, I was born with impaired vision so the requirement was that it should be easy to set up and it is but....that it was easy to connect the inner tent and that then it would just be to leave it there was a lie to say the least, can't in any way in the world first and get a sensible assembly of the inner tent and with those extra loose connections that also have to be fiddled there..no it's absolutely no tent for a visually impaired person, in any way.
so after the first night in the forests around Stockholm, you are quite disappointed with that tent.😔
Now I have to try to see if I can solve this by asking for help from others who have that tent, there are no instructions/youtube clips either😔
I understand the challenge and like I said in the video .. myself I removed all the hooks on the shock cord and tied the inner directly to the outer so that it stay put and doesn’t come loose.
At the other end on the inner it’s adjustable so that you can tension the shock cord or loosen it depending on if pitched high or low.
I use all the 10 points to attach the inner and I suggest you do the same. The. Pitching and adjusting should be fairly easy and it will always stay together for an easy pitch.
A bit fiddely to to start with but it’s a one time job. Then you should be ok. 🙂
Hello! I assume Robert was talking about the hooks that connect the innernet to the outertent. They are there to allow quick detachment of the innernet. The inner and outer tent ship as two separate products, so the first time customers normally need to attach the two and set it up. If you wish, we'd be happy to help you by shipping the tent already connected to the innernet, and make the connection more permanent by not using the connector hooks (it can still be undone at home).
@@roberthammenrudh Not so easy to tie when I see as bad as I unfortunately do, I can't find all the 10 points either but that probably depends on my visual impairment, now I don't really know if I dare to take the tent outside again when I take my next hiking days.😥
