North Shore Line - Past & Present

  • The legendary Chicago North Shore & Milwaukee Railroad vanished 50 years ago, but not before rail historians thoroughly documented the line. Owing to the generosity of donors and the time and effort of volunteers, several rail cars were preserved at railway museums. On July 7, 2013, the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, IL hosted a special event to commemorate the half-century mark, showcasing several North Shore cars that are either restored or undergoing restoration. The museum also launched the Campaign for the Electroliner, a major fundraising effort to restore CNS&M 801-802 to operation in time for its 75th Birthday in 2016.
This video celebrates the scope and quality of IRM's preservation and restoration projects. It is not a rail enthusiast video so much as an art film merging latter-day digital photos and videos taken at the museum with brilliant Kodachromes dating from 50-60 years ago. The images segue back and forth seamlessly between past and present, using special effects to further cloud the passage of time. Some scenes that appear to be pre-1963 were actually photographed in 2013, and vice versa.

I rode the NS every weekend in 1957-1959 Chicago to school west of Milwaukee. Shore line route was too slow compared to the Skokie Valley route. What memories

The thing that made the North Shore and The Aurora And Elgin unique was it's operation over the Chicago 'L'

I rode the NSL once in 62 as a young kid....from edison court to milwaukee and back. The sounds stuck with me all those years...great to hear them again at the beginning of this video

Many fond memories!! As a boy we lived on 5th street in Milwaukee. All those trains passed our house!
I remember trains full of Sailors from Great Lakes heading into Milwaukee.
One time a train broke down (had a hot box…bad wheel bearing) right on our block… us kids watched as they took care of that…..seemed to take all day.
    Thanks for posting 🇺🇸🇺🇸👍👍

Another great Electropickle Production. A fascinating blend of yesterday and today. We are so fortunate to have people dedicated to preserving the past and Eric to document it for today and tomorrow. .

Creative use of archive photos and IRM run-by and barn shots. Entertaining and nostalgic. I first encountered CNS&M in Milwaukee as I started high school. I rode the first seat in the Electroliner on my 14th birthday (a trip my folks never realized I had taken) to Highland Park and then C&NW to Highwood to witness the condition of a company in its final months before abandonment. I'd visit the station many evenings and see the sailors boarding for Great Lakes. The Harrison Avenue shops and extensive street running in Milwaukee, particularly in winter, were a challenge for its employees. I'm grateful to all the enthusiasts and restoration crews who have preserved operations at IRM and the East Troy lines.

+Paul Biwer When we were kids in the fifties, my father would take us up to Milwaukee for the day on the North Shore, and we would eat at Mader's or Carl Ratch's. Never was on the Electroliner, but the regular North Shore trains just flew! At the time, Milwaukee was a civilized, almost European city; not like now.

Paul Biwer Lucky you, I Was Born in 64 A Year After The NSL Was Discontinued, However I Can Tell In the Old Photos When The NSL is On The Skokie Valley Route Because I Use The Yellow Line CTA At Least Twice A Week, The Skokie Swift Opened The Year I Was Born And Uses The Same Route The NSL Did Ending At Dempster St

Thanks for uploading this video of one of my 8 favorite railroads. I wish I could have ridden all of the North Shore Lines, but alas was too young when it went out of business. But, I can relive what I missed through videos like this...and books and videos I have on this great railroad.

It shouldn't surprise anyone that Japanese railroad engineers visited the NSL in the late 50s and 60s, they particularly studied the Electroliners.

Neat stuff - neat memories of living in the greatest city in the world! In the late 50's (no recall) early 60's early childhood - Chicago - was my perfect wonderland! All the ethnic diversity - languages - food and my grandma - miss her so! Mom too!
