Tangerine Flyer In Reverse
The Illinois Railway Museum in Union, IL rolls out its 3-car Illinois Terminal "Tangerine Flyer" for special occasions. Like other head-end power hauling a string of passenger trailers, the 'locomotive' - here, IT Combine 277 - is positioned at the east end of the train. There is no provision to turn trains around at Kishwaukee Grove, the east end of the line, so on westbound trips the conductor pilots the train from the "tail" car using a handheld radio to communicate with the motorman and the dispatcher.
This video shows portions of a westbound trip from the vantage point of a passenger riding in parlor-observation car 234. As they say on the high seas, "Full speed astern!"

Kitsch

The images in this video depict the tawdry sort of 'junque' that some tolerate and others pretend to love but really hate. Just what is "kitsch?" According to the Oxford Dictionary, kitsch is art, objects, or design considered to be in poor taste because of excessive garishness or sentimentality, but sometimes appreciated in an ironic or knowing way. Knickknacks, figurines, clocks, ornaments, p...

In 2023, Illinois Railway Museum celebrated their 70th Anniversary by hosting several special events. On Saturday July 1, the Museum featured "70 for 70," an hours-long trolley pageant which involved the participation of some 70 electric cars, most under their own propulsion. Kiddieland, a popular amusement park once located in Melrose Park - a suburb of Chicago - closed permanently at the end of the 2009 season. Happily, many of its iconic rides were sold and reassembled at other locations. The beloved coal-burning steam locomotives and a few passenger cars found a new home in Hesston, Indiana. Both engines were custom-built by Wagner & Sons Miniature Train Co. The...

Who's At Phalt? Asphalt!

This video shows the final steps in the street paving process. I viewed the action from my driveway. As a convoy of steel-wheeled rollers compress and compact the just-paved southbound lane, an asphalt paver lays the top layer on the northbound lane. The dump truck containing the hot asphalt empties its load and a fully loaded truck backs in to take its place. Several workers follow directly be...

It was a crime Mayor Daily putting the North Shore Line out of business because of his actions.Dam Henry Ford and the Model T killing mass transit in this country.😢😢
Henry Ford's goal with the Model T was not to replace public transit. The Model T was meant to allow people who weren't near transit to be able to go places. There were many, many areas of the US, even during the heyday of interurban transit where horses were the only real way to get away from home. For example, if you live in a farmhouse miles away from town, that Model T was the only way to get into town. Cars didn't kill public transit. Bad policy did.
Dude..... North Shore Line AND Tommy Dorsey or is it Glenn Miller? My father loved the NSL....he grew up with it.... My mother and father both loved the big bands! My parents are both gone now. This little video is ripping my heart out....😢
Absolutely stunning I grew up in the Bronx and remember when the 3rd Avenue el was torn down. Wonderful job, great video.
I wonder if the people of Detroit & Minneapolis have had a 20-year mourning for Hudson's & Dayton's?
Nice video, well filmed. I saw this layout in action today, and was much impressed with the quality and functionality of the modules, and the skill of the builder and wire assemblers. I'm glad that this layout continues to be shown, as it is unique yet very reflective of the nation's past public transit. Thanks for introducing me to your traction group!
Beautiful layout, very nicely done track work. Would love to see some more footage at prototypical speeds.
Nice video and very good music! I enjoyed it! ;)
Im retired now, but as a young boy my grandmother took me, my 2 sisters and my mom to marshal fields after thanksgiving for shopping and dinner in the big dining room with the humongous tree with uncle mistletoe on top. to a child it was something I'll never forget.
How many hundreds and hundreds of hours did it take to put all those decorations up?! and how many to take down?!
Sallie Posniak, who was in charge of designing the Holiday decorations for most of her 38 years at Field's, replied, "What a difficult question to answer. There was the Great Tree, but there were also hundreds of other trees, The Main Aisle, Candy Cane Lane, and Cozy Cloud Cottage-the small decor throughout the store. Removing was faster than installing. Only Homer Sharp [Design Division manager] could answer that question."
Wasn't the Electroliner's bell (or gong if you prefer) air operated originally?
@johnrich2102: I think it was. It sounded similar to what you hear the bells on crossing gates only louder. Actually there's 2 floor pedals for the gong on the Electroliner one for just the single bell sound and the other for the air or what I call the Alarm-gong sounding what I just described before. You would hear the gongs when running in Milwaukee's City Streets and when entering and leaving the Main Milwaukee Terminal since it encountered street running to do so.
All of the classy department stores had restaurants. Abraham & Strauss, Hahne's, Bamberger's, Hess's, Marshall Field's, etc. Beautiful little cafes, with linen table cloths and crystal chandeliers. Going to one of these stores meant getting dressed up, wearing your best hat and gloves. Such a shame it's all gone.
Great video. I was trying to find the point where its been decided to switch from overhead catenary power to onboard 12v battery power? Around the 9:35 I think it's still on overhead, but then when loading onto the old truck I see a pile of batteries removed? Cheers =)
Look at the crowds in the Loop! Now its dead
Looks Like alot of work It must be a blast to run,...Great!
Thank you for this. I was born in the City of Chicago in 1951 and this was my absolute favorite place to shop all year long not just at the splendid Christmas Time. Moved to the San Francisco area in 1987 and was so disappointed in Macys. It was and still is absolutely soulless. When I heard that Macys was taking taking over Fields in Chicago I knew it was the beginning of the end. I simply had no idea how destructive Macys would be. Upon subsequent visits to Chicago after 2005 I noticed that the State St. store had begun to be desconstructed. Now all I have are the memories and a few lovely things like this video.
Send Macy's back to New York. Fields belongs to Chicago.
I have a huge lump in my throat. Oh how I miss this store and the opportunity to make more memories.😢
The hot chocolate at Marshall Fields was soooooo good ...yummy to the tummy😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🕊️ candy display ✌🏾
I know this is an old video but it gives me some ideas for my layout... Awesome!
This electroliner would be for me reason visit the usa.
Chicago just isn’t the city it was without Marshall Fields!
Very true and there is one more reason to never return to my beloved home town.
Well done brother in law Bob Olson ... amazing the thousands of hours of design and hard labor building the railroad and street car!
And wasn’t there a Marshal Fields cookie too?
I don't think so. There were Mrs. Field's cookies but they were a totally separate company that opened up across the street from Marshall Fields.
Where do I begin? Thank you for this amazing video! How or where you got the footage is a minor miracle! I worked in retail for many happy years, I had such fond memories of the big stores and their Christmas windows, the wonderful things that were sold there and the fantastic restaurants, the customer service and how everything was so much nicer and sweeter. Heart breaking what has been done to such a beautiful business that was incredibly profitable not just in money but in the good feelings that were created long ago by the talented artists/employees that spent long hours creating the “magic”. If I could turn back time or sign a petition anything for just one more Christmas like that 🎄🥂🍾🛷⛸️🎠🧸❣️
Does anyone no if this layout still exist?
Yes, Bob's el trains and streetcars are still rolling!
Reminiscent of the geourgeous animated Christmas window displays in New York city. Magical and exciting, especially to a child.
Life was so much better back then 😊
Oh, my!! How nice to go along for the ride ... again! I grew up in Racine and one house was about a block away from the North Shore Line ... really liked watching the trains go by, and of course, going to Milwaukee and Chicago on one. Thanks for posting!! [Greetings from Tucson where we do have 8 Amtrak trains/week.]
My compliments to IRM! 801-802 looks fantastic and everyone who has been involved in the restoration of this train has justified reasons to be proud. Having been involved with the troubleshooting, repair parts sourcing, and repair work to make sister train 803-804 operable (in a very limited fashion) a decade ago, I can really appreciate how much work it must have taken for IRM’s team to get this far. Well done!
Thank you, Matt, I have shared your comments with the Electroliner restoration team.
I sure wish they could get 803-804 too! And restore that train as well.
803-804 are still at The Rock Hill Furnace Museum at Orbisonia PA.
@mattnawn5019: I sure wish we also had Electroliner #803,804 at the ILLINOIS Railroad Museum. It took can be refurbished further.
The SOUTH SHORE LINE didn't have the traffic between South Bend and Chicago like the North Shore Line did between Milwaukee and Chicago. That's why they never had any Electroliner Trainsets.
Thanks! Great video.
Thanks for a great ride, Electropickle! It has been over sixty-five years since I rode with a friend to Milwaukee and back. Oh yes, Electroburgers were enjoyed! The Electroliner looks great!
Sadly I was on vacation with family that day, otherwise I would have rode. Awesome video!
The electroliner was basically bankrupted because of Mayor Daley's refusal to let it coming to Chicago proper people had to get off and get on a bus because of that bastard not watching Republicans you to his Democratic. Of course this was the age before liberalism and worshipping the residence of the ghetto which way is it nice neighborhood when certain other people used to live there but not anymore but no one talks about that Tuesday o-east for Bolton
Very very cool intro graphics !! Just loved it ! Thanks for the neat ride. James.

I had to do a double take, thought it was a real full sized car until i saw the shadows on the sky and the hand😂, great video
"Autumn in New York"
I grew up in Brooklyn during the '40s and have memories of riding the els and trolleys that crossed the city at that time. My father rode the Ocean Av line into downtown Brooklyn (yes, Brooklyn had a vibrant downtown), that line used PCC cars unlike the Flatbush Av line that used older cars, the line on Cortelyou Av used trolleybuses. I remember the steetcars in Manhattan, they use an underground system much like Washington DC. I have ridden the tram system in many European cities and note that the folks in East Berlin voted to keep their trams and not have a subway like West Berlin. During the late '40s my father took me for an extended ride on the 3rd Av el before they took it down, wood cars with open vestibules. My father had grown up in Ridgewood NJ and often talked about riding the Public Service interurbans there, seems like NJ is slowly trying to build this system back. I was ported in Boston during my service years and rode the lines in that city, trolleys were a fun way of getting around but they don't mix well with auto traffic, was much of that during the 40s due to fuel rationing due to WW2. Thanks for keeping these memories alive.
A treasure never to appear again! A shame really. Thank you posting. It’s a great memory
To heck with the house I just want to buy the basement.😂
Eric bronski I remember his name from the article and model railroader magazine saying farewell to the old El. Model railroader with such a great magazine in the old days.
I would buy the house just to get the layout in the basement 😂
