- What if the greatest military story in America was never told? History has yet to tell the story of America's first two Black Generals - a Father and a Son. Gen. Benjamin O Davis Jr. and Sr. Because of their race, these two men spent a lifetime treated as if they were invisible. Unable to have a voice or speak out of fear of retaliation - they shared their journey only with family. Today, Doug Melville invites you to learn your own family history and shares this story of his ancestors and how they’ve inspired him to continue on their journey of Diversity and Leadership.
The ‘Invisible Generals’ worked for 8 US Presidents, Desegregated the Military, Commanded the Tuskegee Airmen, created the 55MPH speed limit, US Air Marshal Program, Commercial Airport Security - and inspired a generation of Americans. Doug is a 5th generation leader, executive and diversity change agent. His family before him worked under 10 different Presidential administrations, from US Grant in 1873 to Jimmy Carter in 1978, to help create more opportunities and recognition for all Americans in the military, in government, in law and throughout society.
Doug continues this legacy by spending his free time working with the U.S military and higher learning institutions to teach, inspire and help evolve issues relating to equity and inclusion. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
