      @marcelh.170 Před rokem +2

      Flight Engineer, not Navigator. ;) They still do it that way in old fashioned miliary planes, such as the E3-Sentry and the older versions of the C-130. With all the analog instruments and mechanical operating elements, the Flight Engineer is responsible to adjust the engine speed during takeoff to gain steady trust on all the engines, because all of them are running slightly different. During flight, he's the supervisor for all mechanic, hydraulic and electric systems. On the ground, he's performing the visual pre and post flight outside checks.

    Nice video, thanks for uploading. Too many people making comments that betray that they don't know much about airplanes. Virtually all airplanes, especially those that were designed by humans, not by computer, had their share of design flaws, and the DC10 was no exception. But after they were corrected, the Ten proved to be a tough and reliable machine. To all DC10 haters: learn your facts before dishing a great airliner.

      I think the Chicago crash of 1979 may have doomed McDonnell Douglas, as it killed the sales prospects of the DC-10 Super 60 -- which exactly like the DC-8 Super 60 of the previous decade, incorporated mods for increased capacity (-61), range (-62) or both (-63). By the time the aircraft's reputation recovered in the early '80s, the airline industry was no longer interested due to an economic downturn.
      The MD-11 had some of the same improvements, but it was so late that it was fundamentally unable to compete with more efficient all-new designs such as the Airbus A330 and the Boeing 777. The need for greater fuel efficiency also led McD-D to use an unusually small horizontal stabilizer on the MD-11 (this is notable if you compare the DC-10 and MD-11 in plan view), which was implicated in at least two landing crashes.

    • @sobelou
      @sobelou Před 8 lety +1

      ***** You make good points, but here's what I think: I don't think that the series 60 DC10s had great future prospects, it was to close to 747 territory. So the stretch would have to wait until the MD11 concept came along. As for the MD11, it was on paper in a great position to compete with both the 777 and the A340 (the 330 in the 90s was still a mid-range machine), but the MDD Board blew it when instead of designing a wing they tried to save money by improving the DC10 wing, essentially a 60s design. Then the 777 started to prove how reliable the new big engines were, and that doomed not only any revival of the trijets; even the A340 began to wane as better versions of the 330 were put in service. Now, except for extremely large machines, two engines are the rule.

      It's also notable that Bangladesh is a Muslim country -- many Muslim-country airlines cheaply acquired first-generation wide-bodies (such as DC-10s and L-1011s) in order to provide extra capacity to service the Hajj to Mecca, with these aircraft put into storage for the rest of the year.
      Perhaps the phasing out of these aircraft was expedited by Saudi Arabia's crackdown on the use of obsolete aircraft to transport Hajj pilgrims?

Just 2 issues - 1. the FO needs to put his full harness on, in an emegency he can be ejected some distance into open space, from his seat into the cockpit if he only has a lap belt on taking the Capt out and anything he hits. 2. Is that when it comes to checklist less speed is better no matter how old or good you think you are Say-Look-Touch is safer. But great video...

    Very unusual SOP and CRM, as the PF, in this case the capt, sets the flaps and engages the A/P on climb out. In most airlines those are callout from the PF to the PNF to accomplish. I guess it works for them, but a little extra workload for the PF, especially having the FE as confirmation eyes. Not having the FE position around is killing the pilot pool today, as it was the position for a low time/new hire pilot to gain valuable experience and build total time. Very nice video, thaks!

    Difficult to hear everything being said but what a very interesting view of all the activity that goes into a DC10 take-off. Fascinating. Thank you very much.
    How long ago was this filmed? Would you still be able to get yourself invited onto the flight deck these days?

      Hi Scangull! :)
      The video was shot on july the 16th. 2013
      It's hard to say, on the same route it may be possible with Biman.

    The corner is most likely damaged or worn out due to condensation when they are flying above certain hights, then moisture from their breath is collecting above their windows, likely the corners, and when theyget closer to ground, water starts dripping down, it certainly does on a md

      same thing on MD11 (and some other 'mature' aircrafts)... If you notice recent videos, the foam covering the windows frame are used for most of them... But yes, MD11 are around 20 years, this DC10 is 40! ;)

    only comment is not quite a sterile cock pit but pilots were doing checklists and only business in critical areas. DC10 is an awesome plane.

      This was the old good times, when flight engineer had a central role... Not too many logics/computers

    Was this in 2013? Amazing. I flew Biman AMS-BOM in 1986 on a DC-10. I asked Biman to find out which exact plane it was, but never got a reply.... The food was great...
