With an abusive father, if the mom tried to fight back and get the kid out she would be hurt and it would only cause the father to hurt the kid more, so the best thing she can do is let the father do what he wants while she gives the kid stuff to survive behind the fathers back. If the mom tries to get the child out and run she would only put them in more danger, which is why she didn't (unless the mom in the movie was just a terrible person. I haven't seen it, I just know from experience)

Dogs can be loyal to a fault while people turn on you for their personal interests, and you're never guaranteed love from another person.
