Sadly this happened to me and my Daughter. My Zo was lost to an auto accident in 2015. Her face was too badly damaged to offer anyone a full face transplant but we were able to use her eyes. I was told one went to a nice man and the other to a child who had their life changed.
Once we knew for certain that there was absolutely zero brain activity there wasn't a moment wasted for us to offer whatever we could for transplant. My pumpkin had sustained so much damage that none of the major categories were viable. He heart had stopped and started and been paddled and massaged to the point it just couldn't be trusted to keep on going. Same with lungs, and kidneys, and bladder, and liver. We offered anything and everything but there was only a few things they could use.

I am so grateful for those families who made a difficult decision, especially the parents who allowed my oldest to receive the heart of their 13 year old! My oldest passed away last year, after being given an additional 7 years of life. That heart was the last thing to finally give up after the rest of her shut down. For everyone saying “low key selfish” and shit think about it. A mother already grieving and traumatized by the fact her daughter who she probably loved beyond anything in the universe is not even given a whole day to grieve before she’s asked by doctors if they can remove her daughters face and plaster it onto another person. The thought through all of this to a mother who’s just lost her baby was probably very haunting to think of. And the pain of seeing her daughter’s face alive but the rest of her daughter being dead was probably too much to bear. So it makes perfectly logical sense that she’d say no to someone she’s never seen or met before wanting to take her daughters FACE

Thank you! Everyone is saying she’s selfish but could you imagine being a mother and seeing your child’s face on someone who is not your child? That sounds like The Twilight Zone and if you were a mom, that would sound horrifying, especially being asked about this hours after you just lost your kid. You’re still grieving and someone wants to use your child’s face for someone else. What she did was more than kind, so kind you can’t put it into words, but I wouldn’t blame her even if she said no.

I honestly think the young girl, if told that, she wouldn't have been upset if she found out she said no. She seemed like a very down to earth, analytical kid. She would've understood. It is unfortunately the job of hospitals to ask these things, and if I understand correctly the doctor understood and didn't try to pressure her at all.

They didn't outright show this but the doctors intentionally timed it such that they'd meet in the elevator, probably in hopes that maybe seeing her mangled face combined with her lively personality would maybe convince the mother to donate her passed daughter's face. The mother realised this and did comment on it saying that it was convenient how she met the girl just as she was about to leave the hospital but still she agreed to do it anyways. It was kinda manipulative of the doctors but it was well intentioned, her daughter is gone either ways but this way she could still give another daughter a normal life that her own daughter can't have.

We found out he was brain dead and my dad said he never wants to live in life support. We still have home 5 days to make sure he wouldn’t wake up. During that time, seeing my dad have seizures and basically dying in front of us, they approached us about organ donation. At first we were so upset because how dare you ask about taking organs and parts away of our loved one why they are still technically alive. We are losing our loved one and want to keep every single part of him because losing him is so hard. Don’t touch him let us stay with him type of thing. But we talked and I think I was the first to get on board with it. We agreed that why we are losing our dad and husband we could stop someone else from losing their loved one. He saved 5 people from dying and his tissues and muscles improved the quality of life of many. I know even tho we couldn’t ask him, he would have wanted that. It’s so hard.

Studies have shown it was estimated that up to 40% of patients are misdiagnosed as being “brain dead” when in fact they had varying levels of consciousness. so my daughter would not be giving up her face until i have had time to believe it for my self and she has given time to fight. This stirred up painful memories for me, as I’ve had the dreadful experience of having had to say ‘goodbye’ to my own 14 year old daughter after meningococcal septicaemia took her from us in about 48 hours in 2004, just a few weeks before Christmas. The thought of having the opportunity to once again see her lovely face full of life would, for me, be a no-brainer, even if different eyes looked out at me from it. Knowing the caring nature of my daughter and her willingness to help others, it’s something I feel she wouldn’t have had a problem with.
In the fictional episode here though, I can however understand the mother’s initial refusal to even consider it.
Ultimately, for me it’s a moot point ~ the first partial face transplant only occurred in 2005 and the first full face transplant wasn’t achieved until 2010.

Then they were not "brain dead" in the real clinical definition of the term, brain trauma and injury doesnt equate to brain death as in the case of Trenton Mckinley, there are other etiologies that may mimick "braindeath" but there exists a chance of recovery/maintaining life. The term is often thrown around in and out of hospitals which makes the matter even more confusing, but when actual brain death is diagnosed correctly after a thorough medico/legal exam, there usually is no coming back, there has been zero reports of adults recovering from it.
