    Thanks Adam - absolutely loved the approach you talk on your questions. When I look back over all the different creators they each have their own take on things. I can't wait to see you work on that Forest Flame. I like the challenge of different species and at the moment have been trying to get something out of Oleiria which I found up in Orkney. I am sold on sycamore but I love to try and turn them in to Mame. They throw out so much new growth everytime you remove those big leaves. Well done on the 20k as well. All the best :)

    You know, Adam, I have been trying to do bonsai for over 30 years and as each and every year passes I realise I know less and less. It is truly inspiring to see such a young person as yourself so enthusiastic about bonsai. I did kill my first tree and also many more along the way. Have I learned from my mistakes? Yes. have I made the same mistakes? Yes. Without people such as you bonsai would be out of reach for many people. Thank you for your inspiration and enthusiasm and also for you great videos that I take so much from.

    • @notionbonsai
      @notionbonsai  Před rokem +1

      Thank you for your kind words Mick! We are all learning!! You know you have experience when you think you know less!! The quote from Socrates, "The only thing I know is that I know nothing," is a powerful reminder of the vastness of knowledge and the humility that comes with it. In the world of Bonsai, no matter how experienced we become, there is always more to learn. Each tree, each season, and each interaction with nature presents new challenges and opportunities for growth. Even when we think we have mastered a particular technique or aspect of Bonsai, nature has a way of humbling us and reminding us that there is always more to discover 😊

    From what I’ve seen on-line that ficus looks a lot like many others but, to me. It’s really nice because of how healthy it looks. Here on the East coast of Fl, we don’t get your rain but a shower just showed up for my Bougainvilla!

      Been thinking, there’s a branch down near the bottom going out to the right. Had the insane idea to cut main trunk about 1” above this branch and dead wooding it down. Taking it out of the pot it’s in, trimming roots to go in smaller pot. Making the branch the main trunk. Keep the tree really small.

    Correction: it would be wise to call your ”sycamores” sycamore maples, since an actual sycamore is a tree from the family platanus, which for one includes the London plane tree, which I fell in love with when I went to London not so long ago(sadly I don’t have one☹️)
    I’ve heard Peter Chan talking about the London plane tree once in the video ”bonsai secrets” and he made the misconception that the london plane is an acer,
    easy to do the because of the name. (Name most probably derives from the leaf similarity much like here in sweden we call ficus microcarpa “lemon ficus” just because of the leaf similarity)
    Much love Adam!

    • @notionbonsai
      @notionbonsai  Před rokem

      Hey thanks Eddy! 😊 I think Cut and Grow is a viable alternative to wiring, especially if you prefer a more organic approach to shaping your bonsai tree. Both techniques have their advantages and disadvantages, and ultimately, the choice between them depends on your preferences and the needs of your tree. Some bonsai artists prefer Cut and Grow because it allows the tree to grow more naturally and can be less invasive, while others prefer Wiring because it can produce more precise results in a shorter amount of time.
      I think the best approach is to experiment with both techniques and see which one works best for you and what you prefer! 😄🪴

After scratching my head, pulling my hair out deeply lost in ignorance about why my bonsai was dying, what did I do, what I didn't do, was the tree diseased and so on until I lost the battle to figure it all out and save my bonsai. 8 years later, I still incur issues and problems to sort out. One of my favs are the Japanese Maples; I have about 40 different species. Also, I enjoy Crepe Myrtles, Cotton Easter, Bougainvillea and more. • @notionbonsai
      @notionbonsai  Před rokem

      Thanks Kenny! 🙂Of course! In fact, many Bonsai start as small trees in pots before they are trained and shaped into Bonsai. To achieve the Bonsai look, you will need to carefully shape and prune your tree over time.
      When working with a young tree, it is important to be patient and not rush the shaping process. Start by researching the specific species of tree you have to determine the best Bonsai techniques to use, as different species have different growth patterns and requirements.
      You may also want to consider repotting your tree into a shallow Bonsai pot to help give it the traditional bonsai aesthetic. Be sure to use proper soil and fertilization techniques to keep your tree healthy throughout the shaping process. 🪴😄

    Hey Adam, Nice program? Last time we talked, I told you I have been in bonsai for some 35+ years. I tried a bonsai technique back then, and it seemed to work... sort of. The technique is called leaf pruning; it promotes a second crop of leaves but they are smaller. That lends itself nicely to the artistic side of doing bonsai. I was wondering if, in your short hobby of bonsai, you had heard of it, and have you tried it. Maybe your followers would be interested in the concept.

    • @notionbonsai
      @notionbonsai  Před rokem

      Hey Eric! It's great to hear from you again, and thank you for sharing your experience with Bonsai and the technique of leaf pruning. Leaf pruning and even defoliation (when the tree is super healthy) is indeed a technique that can be used to promote a second crop of smaller leaves, which can enhance the artistic appearance of a bonsai tree. It's a way to create more refined and proportionate foliage pads. I may have a video on this topic in the future. 😃
      I think its brilliant that you have been doing Bonsai for so long! 🪴😊

    I killed my first bonsai which was a Japanese maple. Unfortunately it was before the internet and CZcams etc so my only information was a little pamphlet from a garden centre which said you could cut all the leaves off to promote new smaller growth. Well it didn't happen but I was hooked. My biggest disappointment though was when I was a serviceman coming home from Berlin I had to throw 20 bonsais in the bin at customs as I didn't have an import license! (They let me keep the pots!). That killed my love of bonsai for some years but happily I'm back into the hobby once again. I really like your videos.

    • @notionbonsai
      @notionbonsai  Před rokem +1

      Hey! Certainly! Liriodendron Tulipifera, commonly known as the tulip tree or yellow poplar, can indeed be used for Bonsai. The clip and grow technique can work well for the tulip tree. Given their rapid growth in ideal conditions, this technique allows you to encourage branching and shape the tree as it matures. Start by allowing the leader or main branch to grow freely during the growing season, and then clip or prune it back in the fall or winter. This encourages back-budding and the development of secondary branches. Continue this process over several growing seasons to refine the structure and create a more mature appearance. Wiring can also be used to guide branches into the desired positions. Although it is not a common species for Bonsai, theres no harm in giving it a go yourself and seeing how it works for you in your growing conditions. Hope this helps!!

    Ok...this seems like it was pretty tortuous for the story teller in you...7 min!. You noted that the ficis was grafted on the bulbous roots...and you are trying to get new roots so you can cut off the bulbous pieces. Why not just air layer above the graft?
