  • In this Bonsai video I show you how to Easily Create a Bonsai Tree from Potentilla! Potentilla have loads of desireable traits for Bonsai like their small delicate leaves, abundant flowering, flaky bark and their ability to quickly develop a compact and graceful form.
I explain, step by step, how to work with raw material sourced from a garden center to create a beautiful Potentilla Bonsai. From selecting the optimal front for your Bonsai to identifying and addressing problematic or unnecessary branches. You will also learn wiring techniques following the two-branch principle, effective methods for dealing with aphids, and shaping techniques to create a stunning starting tree that will soon flourish into a magnificent Bonsai!
The Potentilla is a genus of flowering plants in the Rose family (Rosaceae), commonly known as Cinquefoils or Potentillas. It is a diverse group of herbaceous perennials, shrubs, and subshrubs that are widely distributed across the Northern Hemisphere - including North America, Europe, Asia, and even in high-altitude regions such as the Himalayas. Depending on the variety, the flowers can be yellow, white, red, pink or orange!

I've always loved perennial potentillas since I first saw them. And that entire time I've been wondering "can this be used for bonsai?". When I was in California I saw a really beautiful potentilla in the garden of Peter Tea, who did an apprenticeship at Aichi-en, so I'm now convinced that there's more work to be done to explore this species. Keep experimenting!

Nice video ! I have 2 Potentillas, just bought this Spring, I did the first styling already and now I let them grow out (I pruned them back quite hard during the first styling). Both have made a lot of back buds and the canopy is looking green so I think they're in good health, I hope they stay that way 🤞

Adam, you must have been reading my posts on Bonsai UK. I had been asking about Potentilla as bonsai and received some great photos, what beautifully aged trunks these trees produce and in such a relatively short time too. Abbotswood is a particularly good variety as a starting point.
