    Adam I am a 70 year old gentleman who began bonsai during the pandemic. All of my learning has occurred by watching enthusiasts on CZcams. I found your channel and have enjoyed every video you have posted. You explain things beautifully. And yes a video on moss would be wonderful to watch. How to collect it, store it and properly apply it. Eagerly looking forward to your next video. Thanks. Greg

    Mate, what a great channel to find, honestly, I just had to watch all your videos in almost one go. I loved all your videos and I find them so so informative, specially for people like me who are most of the time scared of handling plants. The opportunity to watch you for example repotting plants, using the fork, explaining how you use it to untangle the roots without damaging , all those small details are just a new level of confidence unlocked at least for me. Thank you, really, thank you.
    Got to your channel because I got a small Ficus and Carmona today, but having watched your vids opened a new world for me.
    Cheers!

    Hi Notion, been watching all your videos, I think we are following similar progression timeline, I got a very similar stock to yours for £70 about 2 months ago and did a full wire on it. mine had about 5x the foliage though so more to chose from for branches.
    Few tips you might not know.
    - After removing bark from jins, they may take months to years for thick branches to dry out properly on junipers, the wood is "wet" for a while.
    -Branches to Jin should be bent into interesting positions or grown as sacraficial limbs to give more wood/ interesting wood to jin.
    -The initial decaying to get some 'patina' to the wood is a crucial deadwood step, applying lime sulphur stops nature doing anything to make it look natural.
    -lime sulphur should be applied when you have the desired deadwood effect and want to preserve it from weathering further, otherwise it will look juvenile forever.
    Great video none the less, you clearly have put in a lot of work again including annotations.

  • @dofutofu3720

    actually in japan, many bonsai artists keep moss on the trunk. In fact they let it grow on ever branch and all over the trunk. Over time, it looks like a tree in a humid environment with moss covering all their bark. This looks very natural. Although the water retention is true, People let the moss on the trunk completely dry out.

    • @notionbonsai
      @notionbonsai  Před rokem

      Hey Dofu Tofu! Thanks for sharing this Bonsai insight!! Very interesting stuff! I can totally see why they let it dry out. I like to remove it if its growing up the trunk as it can get re-hydrated with each watering 🙂

      Start with a simple tree such as a Chinese Elm or if want one indoors you can't go wrong with a Ficus Retusa type.
      If in UK they sell loads on Amazon. Seikatsu Bonsai are a fairly reliable supplier.
      Then make your own from Nursery stock or trees you find growing.. lots of Maples or Holly around growing in hedgerow.

    • @notionbonsai
      @notionbonsai  Před rokem +1

      Great advice here from Luigi!!!
      I'd also reccommend getting some aluminium wire and experimenting with some cheap garden center junipers. You don't need expensive scissors, normal scissors will do as long as they are sharp! Practice wiring, remember 2 branches to 1 piece of wire 😇

      @@notionbonsai I'm not really having a go at you. Fair play for trying but remember to be accurate with the information you teach others. My main problem is the scare mongering about Lime Sulphur. It is very unlikely to burn you. It may cause a mild skin irritation to some people that might be sensitive to it if they leave it on their skin for a few hours. I have used it for 40 years and have never come across any bona fide example of the injuries you talk about.
      You applied the lime sulphur and then watered the tree which will have washed the lime sulphur off. Always a good idea to let it dry properly before watering it off.
      Itoigawa are not found in garden centres because the garden centre trade don't promote them as a garden tree due to them not having a naturally uniform growth pattern like the conifers they prefer to sell. They are better off being traded by the bonsai nurseries and utilised as bonsai.
      Please find a safer way to make your jin and shari before you cut yourself badly. A carpet knife is not really the safest tool to encourage others to use and people will be injured if trying to copy you.
      Apart from that keep it up.
